Udayana Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities (UJoSSH) is an international and an open access journal which is published by Research and Community Services Institutes of Udayana University. Abstract

This study entitled “Adjacency Pairs in Avatar Movie” is a study about adjacency pairs and generally about conversation analysis. This study investigates the types of adjacency pairs, and the preferred and dis-preferred responses of adjacency pairs which are used between characters in Avatar movie. Avatar movie was the data source of this study, and the data was collected by using the library research and documentation method. This study used qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data of the problems. The theory that is used in this study is the theory of conversational analysis specifically in adjacency pairs by Levinson (1983) in the book “Pragmatics”. For the results, there are a total of 16 types of adjacency pairs in conversation used between characters in Avatar movie. In total, there are 97 data of conversation of adjacency pairs found in the movie. Based on the types of adjacency pairs found in this study, there are 9 types of adjacency pairs determined as preferred responses and there are a total of 73 data of adjacency pairs as the format of preferred responses. In dis-preferred responses, there are 7 types of adjacency pairs and 24 data found in the movie of this study. The most types of adjacency pairs found in the movie are the types of question-answer (29 data), telling-acceptance (20 data), telling-refusal (10 data), and request-acceptance (8 data). Abstract

This article entitled “Figurative Language In Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS)’s And Michael Jackson’s Songs”. This study aims to find out the types of figurative language in the song lyrics. “Dynamite” song was popularized by the South Korean boyband BTS and “Loving You” song was popularized by Michael Jackson. In this study, the data was taken from the song lyrics in each line, then looking for words that belong to the types of figurative language and to analyse using a qualitative method. The theory for the analysis used the figurative language theory by Knickerbocker and Renninger (1974) and is supported by the theory of meaning by Leech (1974). The results of the study shows, the types of figurative language used are hyperbole, personification, allusion, simile, metaphor, synechdoche, metonymy, irony, and symbol.

Abstract

This study is entitled Commissive Illocutionary Acts in the American Comedy Movie Entitled: Home Alone. It focuses on a branch of speech act namely illocutionary acts, in particular to commissive and its types. The aims of this study are to identify the types of commissive illocutionary acts used by the characters in the movie and analyze the context of situation that supports the utterances which contain commissive illocutionary acts in the movie entitled Home Alone. The data of this study is taken from the American comedy movie entitled Home Alone (1990). The method used to collect the data in this study is the documentation method. The movie was watched repeatedly and the utterances was noted using note-taking technique. The descriptive-qualitative method was applied in analysing the data. In presenting the data, this study used the informal method which presented the data in the form of sentences. This study used the theory of Commissive Illocutionary Acts proposed by Searle (1969) and the theory of Context of Situation proposed by Holmes (2013); both theories were used in an attempt to answer the problems of this study. The findings of this study shows that there were forty-two utterances which are categorized under the types of commissive illocutionary acts, namely; promise, threat, refusal, intend and promise to do something, and offer to do something. Refusal type of commissive illocutionary acts is the most frequent one found in the analysis. Meanwhile, the context of situations are indeed beneficial to support the use of commissive illocutionary acts in Home Alone movie. Abstract

This study emphasizes the English learning process for young learners in acquiring English vocabulary through children's songs. The aims of this study are to find out what kinds of vocabulary that the young learners acquire through children's songs and analyze how to do the internal and external factors that influence the acquisition of vocabulary acquired by young learners through children's songs. The data in this study were taken from observing 4-5 years old young learners. The data were collected directly by observing the young learner and questionnaire. The technique used in obtaining the data from the object was note-taking. It was used to know the progress of the young learner during observation. Then, the collective data were analyzed using the qualitative method. The findings of this study showed that children's songs had a positive influence on acquiring English vocabulary. First, the result of this research shows that there are eight songs that were taught to the children. Hooray School kindergarten students were able to master 62 vocabularies from all of the songs. There are 31 nouns, 20 verbs, 7 adjectives, 2 prepositions, 1 pronoun, and 1 adverb. Second, the internal factor includes age, experience and learning style. The external factors consist of motivation, instruction, and access to foreign speakers. Children who are more experienced, motivated, and have access to native speakers, are easier to acquire English vocabulary.

Abstract

This study entitled Women’s Language Features that Used by Character’s in Movie: “Tinkerbell: Secret of the Wings”. The aims to identifying of women’s language features and find out the function of the language in the movie based on theory applied. The data of this study was taken from observation and taking note the dialogue of characters on the movie using documentation method and the method applied was documentation method. The collected data were selected and put into categories of women’s language features and categorized their function which were descriptively analysed based on the theory applied. The result showed that 9 features and 5 function founded in the movie.

Abstract

The title of this study is Phrasal Verbs Found in “Aquaman” Movie Subtitle and Their Translation into Indonesian. This study has two aims namely to analyze the types of translation procedure applied in the translation of English phrasal verbs in Aquaman movie subtitle into Indonesian subtitle and to analyze the translation equivalence of English phrasal verbs into Indonesian in Aquaman movie’s subtitle applying the theory of translation procedures by Vinay and Darbelnet and theory of translation equivalence by Nida. The English and Indonesian subtitle of Aquaman movie is the source of data in this study. The data was collected by using the documentation method. Descriptive and qualitative method is used to analyze the data. The findings show that there are three procedures applied in the subtitle. There are literal, transposition, modulation translation procedure. The translation equivalence that are found are the two equivalence which are formal and dynamic equivalence.

Abstract

This study entitled The Exploration of Verbal and Visual Signs with Reference to BTS Music Video “Dynamite” and Its Song Lyrics. There were three aims of this study; explaining the meaning of verbal signs, describing the meanings of visual signs and analyzing the relation between verbal and visual signs on the Dynamite song and its music video. The data were taken from an English song by BTS (Bangtan Seonyondan) that was released on 21st August 2020. The data was limited on the second chorus of the song and the 8th scene of the music video. The data was gathered from the music video by watching the music video through YouTube and reading the song lyrics that was found in search engine. The collected data from this study was analyzed using the qualitative method. Then, the data was analyzed with semiotic theory by Charles Sanders Pierce and seven types of meaning theory by Geoffrey Leech and also supported by other theories and opinions from numerous experts in this field. There were two out of seven types of meaning found in Dynamite song lyrics—second chorus part. The types of meaning were conceptual meaning and connotative meaning. there were also their visual signs that categorized as icon, index, symbol was found in the 8th scene of the music video. In this study was also found the relation between the verbal and visual signs of Dynamite’s lyrics and its music video.

Abstract

Ni Kadek Leoni1, I Made Suastra2, Ni Luh Putu Krisnawati3 Abstract : This study is entitled External and Internal Conflict of the Main Character in the Movie Clouds. The aim is to analyze the kinds of conflict and to find out the strategies of main character to manage the conflict in the movie Clouds. The documentation method also the technique used to collect the data in this study note-taking technique and qualitative descriptive method was used as a method and technique of analyzing data based on the theory by Kenney and the theory by Deetz and Stevenson . The results show two types of conflict found in Clouds movie: External and Internal Conflict. The most appear conflict in conversation is external conflict than internal conflict. The most applied conflict management shows in the movie are avoidance, compromise, and pacification because that is relevant resolution conflict to the topic in conversation.

Abstract

Abstract: This study is entitled Subtitling Strategies Applied in The Subtitle of The Movie "Coco" From English Into Indonesian. This study is aimed to find out the subtitling strategies applied in translating the Indonesian subtitle of an English movie "COCO" and analyze the translation equivalence of the movie subtitle. All the data analyzed based on Theory of Subtitling Strategies according to Gottlieb and Theory of Translation Equivalence according to Nida. The source of the data taken from the downloaded Indonesian subtitle text of the original movie entitled COCO. Documentation method with note-taking technique were used to collect the data and to analyze using descriptive method with qualitative approach. The result of the data shows that the translator applied only eight of ten subtitling strategies. They are Expansion, Paraphrase, Transfer, Imitation, Transcription, Condensation, Decimation, and Deletion. The findings show that the translation of Coco's movie subtitle is equivalent. It shows that Dynamic and Formal equivalence applied in the translation. Keywords: translation, subtitling strategy, translation equivalence

Abstract

The research aims to describe the kinds of translation errors made by Students at the Sixth Semester of English Department in IKIP Muhammadiyah Maumere. The method used in the research was descriptive qualitative. The subject of the research was the sixth semester students from English Department. The translation text consisting of 1 paragraphs (source texts) and all of it’s’ translations in English (the target texts) were used in the research to find out the translation errors. Then the researchers classified them into 5 kinds of translation errors according to Vilar et al. (2006, p. 698). The results of the research revealed that there were 241 translation errors found in students’ translation. There were translation errors in the form of incorrect word (35, 6%), punctuation (11, 6%), missing word (30, 7 %), word order (15, 3%), and unknown words (6, 6%). In conclusion, the three most prominent error categories made by the students were incorrect word, punctuation and missing word errors.
