Abstract

ABSTRACTThe students of MTs. Al-Khairaat Tondo had a problem in simple past tense; namely, they had low understanding in simple past tense. This research aims at finding out whether applying Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) Strategy is effective to improve the understanding of ninth grade students of MTs. Al-Khairaat Tondo in simple past tense. This is a quasi-experimental research design. Its sample was 18 for grade IXB and 20 for grade IXC which were selected randomly. Its data is collected through a test (pre-test and post-test). Pre-test was conducted to know the students’ prior knowledge before treatment, while the post-test was conducted to measure their understanding after treatment. These data were analyzed statistically. The result of this research indicates that the t-counted was 0,45. The researcher found that the t-table was 0,329 by applying 0,05 level of significance and 36 degrees of freedom. T-counted value was higher than t-table value. It means the research hypothesis is accepted. In other words, applying Contextual Teaching and Learning Strategy can improve students’ understanding in simple past tense.Key terms: Applying. Abstract

This study aims at identifying the types of maxims flouted by the main characters of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and describing the context behind those floutings. The data were taken from the fourth season of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, an American police procedural comedy TV show. Documentation method was used to collect the data. Descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data by applying Grice’s Cooperative Principle (1975) and Cutting’s Theory of Context (2002). Based on the analysis, all types of conversational maxims were flouted, namely maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner. Another finding in this research is that the context behind the floutings were needed to understand the meaning of the utterances. Keywords:  Context, Maxim Flouting, Pragmatics

Abstract

This study entitled Positive Politeness Strategies in “Ratatouille” is interesting to be discussed as an object analysis due to the application of positive politeness strategies used in the social interaction. The aims were to analyze positive politeness strategies used by the characters, and to describe the factors influencing the characters chose positive politeness strategies. The data were taken from the script of the movie. The data were collected through documentation method by note-taking technique. The utterances which were used as the data were the utterances of the conversation between the characters which were applied the positive politeness strategies. Furthermore, the theory of politeness by Brown and Levinson (1987) used to analyze the positive politeness strategies and the factors influencing the choice of positive politeness strategies in the conversation between the characters in “Ratatouille” movie. Based on the theory mentioned above, there were fourteen strategies of positive politeness strategies were found among the characters’ dialogue in “Ratatouille” movie. Moreover, there were two factors influencing the choice of positive politeness strategies, namely the payoffs and the relevant circumstances: sociological variables.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengklasifikasikan frekuensi dari penggunaan kata benda workand tiga sinonim terdekatnya yaitu job, assignment, dan task, menjelaskan secara terperincistruktur kolokasi, dan mengidentifikasi tipe-tipe makna dari kata-kata benda tersebut yangditemukan di COCA. Metode dokumentasi dan teknik pencatatan diterapkan dalampengumpulan data sedangkan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Benson dkk. (1986), Huddelston &Pullum (2005), dan Leech (1974) digunakan untuk menganalisa data. Penelitian inimenunjukan bahwa kata benda work, assignment, dan task paling sering digunakan dalamteks-teks akademik sementara kata benda job paling sering digunakan di TV/takarir. Dalamhal struktur kolokasi, kata benda task menjadi kata yang paling fleksibel karena dapatberdampingan dengan 33 kata kerja leksikal sementara itu, kata benda job menjadi kata yangpaling tidak fleksibel karena hanaya dapat berdampingan dengan 18 kata kerja leksikal.Selanjutnya, hanya terdapat 2 fungsi gramatikal yang teridentifikasi, yaitu kata benda sebagaisubjek dan kata benda sebagai objek. Dalam hal tipe makna, kata benda work dan tiga sinonimterdekatnya hanya memiliki 2 tipe makna, yaitu makna konseptual dan makna kolokatif.

Abstract

This study emphasizes the English learning process for young learners in acquiring English vocabulary through children's songs. The aims of this study are to find out what kinds of vocabulary that the young learners acquire through children's songs and analyze how to do the internal and external factors that influence the acquisition of vocabulary acquired by young learners through children's songs. The data in this study were taken from observing 4-5 years old young learners. The data were collected directly by observing the young learner and questionnaire. The technique used in obtaining the data from the object was note-taking. It was used to know the progress of the young learner during observation. Then, the collective data were analyzed using the qualitative method. The findings of this study showed that children's songs had a positive influence on acquiring English vocabulary. First, the result of this research shows that there are eight songs that were taught to the children. Hooray School kindergarten students were able to master 62 vocabularies from all of the songs. There are 31 nouns, 20 verbs, 7 adjectives, 2 prepositions, 1 pronoun, and 1 adverb. Second, the internal factor includes age, experience and learning style. The external factors consist of motivation, instruction, and access to foreign speakers. Children who are more experienced, motivated, and have access to native speakers, are easier to acquire English vocabulary.

Abstract

The title of this study is “Expressive Illocutionary Act in the Movie Entitled Maleficent”. Based on the problems formulated, this study is aimed at identifying the types of expressive illocutionary acts found in Maleficent movie, and to analyze the context of situation in Maleficent movie. The data was taken from the utterances in the movie entitled Maleficent and explained in descriptive qualitative method. There were two major theories used in conducting this study. The fisrt theory was propsed by Searle (1976) about the types of expressive illocutionary acts. The other theory from Holmes (2013) was applied to explain the context of situation of the utterances. The results of the analysis showed that based on the movie Maleficent, all types of expressive illocutionary act are used by the characters to show certain expression. All data in this study consist of all components of context of situation proposed by Holmes such as the participants, the settings, the topic and the function.
