Abstract

A notable trend in Indonesia's agricultural sector is the aging of its farmer population. The reluctance of the younger generation to pursue careers in the agricultural sector is attributed to pervasive negative perceptions, including the lacks societal prestige. In an effort to increase farmer succession, the Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with IFAD, has initiated the YESS. This program offers internships, training, funding through competitive grants, and the development of young agricultural entrepreneurs for young generations. The objective of this study is to analyze the impact of the YESS on the agricultural ecosystem and to identify the agricultural ecosystem with the most influence in supporting farmer succession. The present study involved 120 beneficiaries of the YESS in West Java, East Java, South Kalimantan, and South Sulawesi selected through purposive sampling. The analysis was conducted using multidimensional scaling, agricultural human resources and agricultural regulations. The findings of the present study indicate that the regulatory framework governing agriculture the proliferation of farmer succession in Indonesia. The extent to which existing agricultural regulations are implementable and representative is directly correlated with the number of farmer successions. Achieving this objective necessitates a collaborative effort among the Ministry of Agriculture, in its capacity as the policy maker, academics, young farmers, young agricultural entrepreneurs, and relevant stakeholders to achieve sustainable farmer succession.

Abstract

Dynamics of the Wana Agung Sejahtera Farmer Group in Rejoagung Village, Sumberwringin Sub-District, Bondowoso Regency. This research aims to analyze the dynamics of the Wana Agung Sejahtera Farmer Group in Rejoagung Village, Sumberwringin Sub-district, Bondowoso Regency. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, grounded in the theory of Johnson and Johnson. Informants were selected purposively, and data were obtained through in-depth interviews and documentation. Data were analyzed using the method by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The results describe the dynamics of the Wana Agung Sejahtera Farmers Group in terms of 7 key elements: group goals, group communication, leadership, decision-making, power utilization, creativity, and conflict management. Two elements show dynamics, namely creativity and power utilization. The element of power utilization in the aspect of group norms includes an unwritten rule regarding member attendance in group activities. The consequence is that members are reprimanded by other members and may receive punishment in the form of social sanctions, such as being ignored or subtly criticized during activities. The creativity element in the aspect of developing creativity demonstrates that the Wana Agung Sejahtera Farmers Group, which initially had limited knowledge about proper coffee cultivation and market access, has now acquired the necessary knowledge and is able to develop creativity in terms of proper coffee cultivation and market access.

Abstract

The sustainable management of natural resources is crucial for maintaining ecosystem sustainability and ensuring long-term fulfillment of basic needs. Farmers in Beruk Village, residing in the upstream area of the Watershed (DAS), are able to meet their basic needs through farming on steep landslide-prone land, which should ideally be designated as conservation areas. The research aims to examine integrated farming practices, assess local institutional support in conservation activities, and identify the sustainability of conservation-based farming efforts. The study employs a qualitative method, conducted in Beruk Village, Jatiyoso Sub-district, Karanganyar Regency. Fifteen informants were selected using purposive and snowball sampling methods. Data analysis utilized the interactive inductive analysis approach by Miles and Huberman. The research findings indicate that farmers in Beruk Village practice integrated farming systems that combine food, feed, and fertilizer concepts. Local institutional support from Beruk Village includes active participation of members in various conservation activities. The study concludes that farmers in Beruk Village implement integrated farming systems combining food, feed, and fertilizer concepts, but not all farmers apply conservation principles in their farming practices. The study recommends enhancing education and intensive training for farmers on the benefits and techniques of implementing conservation practices. This could be achieved through collaboration with educational institutions, local governments, and non-governmental organizations.

Abstract

The Planting Area Expansion (PAT) program aims to optimize rice fields that were previously hampered by water limitations through the use of water pumps to increase water availability during the dry season. The objectives of the study were to analyze farmers’ attitudes towards the PAT program, describe factors that shape these attitudes, and examine the relationship between these factors and farmers’ attitudes in Weru Sub-district, Cirebon Regency. The method used was quantitative with data collection through observation, interviews using questionnaires, and documentation. A total of 77 farmers were determined as respondents using the proportional random sampling technique, and the data were analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test. The results showed that most farmers were hesitant regarding the outcomes and impacts of the PAT program due to increased production costs during the dry season, leading them to disagree with its benefits. The farming experience factor had a significant positive relationship with farmers’ attitudes, while formal education, non-formal education, and the role of people considered important had a significant negative relationship. Age and local culture factors did not have a significant relationship with farmers’ attitudes. These results indicate that farming experience contributes to forming a more positive attitude towards the PAT program, while education, intensity of extension, and social roles tend to form attitudes that are hesitant or less supportive. This study suggests that experienced farmers be the main target of the program and reduce the intensity of discussions about the PAT program in agricultural extension activities.

Abstract

Agriculture is a primary sector in human life that continuously faces dynamic changes and uncertainty in its development. Such uncertainty includes farming risks encountered by farmers, particularly production risks such as pest and disease attacks on agricultural land. Farmers possess experiential knowledge and philosophical values in assessing production risks; however, these assessments are often not yet reflective and lack sustained impact. This study aims to examine the primary and secondary cognitive appraisals of members of the Bimo Karyo Farmer Group, as well as the internalization of the Stoic principle of the dichotomy of control in preventive and mitigative actions in dealing with production risks. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method, using depth interviews with seven informants and data analysis techniques through coding (open, axial, and selective coding). The results indicate that most farmers demonstrate a negative primary appraisal (perceiving risk as a threat), as asynchronous planting patterns and seasonal influences increase the intensity of pest and disease attacks. In their secondary appraisal, farmers tend to adopt preventive measures, such as optimizing technical production practices, implementing crop rotation, and utilizing high-quality agricultural inputs. These findings reflect the Stoic value of the dichotomy of control, in which farmers are able to distinguish and focus on aspects within their control, while accepting—along with efforts to minimize—those beyond their control. Stakeholders are therefore encouraged to consider the psychological and philosophical dimensions of farmers, as these aspects shape their attitudes in organizing themselves within farmer groups.
