Abstract

This research aims to find out how the positive reinforcement is given to motivate the seventh grade students in SMP Pangudi Luhur 1 Yogyakarta and to explain the benefits of applying positive reinforcement. In order to answer the two research problems; how is positive reinforcement given to motivate the students in SMP Pangudi Luhur 1 Yogyakarta and what are the benefits of applying positive reinforcement in SMP Pangudi Luhur 1 Yogyakarta, the researcher used mixed-method for this research. The researcher used three theories in order to answer the first and second research problems. For the first problem, the researcher used the theory from Becker, Engelman, and Thomas (1975) which explained about the ways of apply positive reinforcement.Meanwhile, the theories from Al-Tamimi and Shuib (2009) and Maehr (1984) which defined about the benefits of applying positive reinforcement were used to answer the second research problem. Those threetheories used as the foundation in making observation checklist and questionnaire. The researcher applied Classroom Action Research (CAR) for this research. The research showed that applying positive reinforcement in the form of giving praise and extra score was used by English tutor to motivate the students in learning English.

Abstract

There are vast amount of English loanwords in Japanese language than other languages. It is in contradistinction to the fact that Japanese language itself has a distant difference in terms of phonology, syntax, pragmatics and discourse from English. Certainly, the borrowing of English words in Japanese language involves some loanword transformations in order to fit its language system. In order to discover those, first, the researcher reviews the relevant literature of the loanword transformations in Japanese. Then, the researcher analyses the types of loanwords transformation from English loanwords production of 5 AKB48 songs. Document analysis was used in this research. The result shows that phonological transformation is the dominant type used in the songs.

Abstract

This study analyses the use of code-mixing as a communication strategy used in Ika Natassa’s metropop novel Antologi Rasa. Antologi Rasa is a best-selling metropop novel that depicts Indonesian urban lifestyle; it portrays the have and educated adults living in Jakarta. This paper seeks out the answer to the following questions: (1) What types of code-mixing are employed? and (2) What is the communicative function of code-mixing? The researcher collects the data from Chapter 1 of Antologi Rasa. The researcher only lists the dialogues found in Chapter 1 that contain code-mixing. After listing all data that contain code-mixing, the researcher categorizes each of the code-mixing based on the types of code-mixing based on Kachru’s theory (1982) and the communicative function of code-mixing according to Hoffmann’s theory (1991). The result of the research shows that in the first chapter of Antologi Rasa, there are 68 sentences that contain five types of code-mixing, namely Unit Insertion (50%), Unit Hybridization (1.47%), Sentence Insertion (29.41%), Idiom and Collocation Insertion (17.64%), and Reduplication (1.47%). The researcher also finds out the reasons of code-mixing found in Ika Natassa’s Antologi Rasa, namely talking about a particular topic (95.5%) and being emphatic about something (4.4%).

Abstract

English native speakers express their feelings and condition using idiomatic expressions. Idiomatic expressions in English cannot be translated literally in the target language. Furthermore, idiomatic expressions translation can be found in movie dialog as a subtitle. This research answers one research problem, which is the idiomatic expressions translation in School of Rock movie. The instruments of this study are the English subtitle and the Indonesian subtitle of School of Rock movie.

Abstract

We realize the difficulty of acquiring skill in second language writing. Many aspects in writing should be concerned, include model texts, grammar, spell-check, punctuation and prepositions. Learners have to study how to convey their understanding of grammatical rules. In this research, researchers conducted analysis in grammatical error based on surface strategy taxonomy. Surface strategy taxonomy highlights the way surface structures are altered. It includes omission, addition, misformation, and misordering errors. There are 125 grammatical errors found in 12 creative writings which include 37 errors in omission, 10 errors in addition, 13 errors in misinformation, 1 errors in misordering, and 64 errors in others category. Researchers mostly found errors in use of tenses and punctuation as other error category. The participant did not make any improvement in his creative writings from March 2013 up to January 2014 because he repeated make same grammatical errors in each article.

Abstract

This study examined the English proficiency of English Language Education Study Program students, with main focus the use of prepositions of time, place and direction. The researchers discussed the difficulties of first semester students in using these prepositions properly in the sentences. The participants of this research were the first semester students of English Language Education Study Program at Sanata Dharma University. The researchers invited 43 students in the DPA class. The data of this research were collected from questionnaires and Cloze Tests. The collected data from questionnaires were analyzed based on Likert Scale. The data resulted from Cloze Tests were concluded using Level of Achievement Score. The results confirmed that the students experienced the difficulties in using the preposition of place and direction than the preposition of time. The findings revealed that the students were confused in the use of words in, on, and toward. Furthermore, the findings imply that the students should pay more attention to the prepositions and need to find the best strategies to acquire them.

Abstract

In the formal context of communication, capability to speak in public and convince the audiences becomes an essential necessity (Al-Tamimi, 2014). Nevertheless, many people are afraid of public speaking (Brewer, 2001). As a result, fillers such as err…, umm…, or well, so, you know, I mean are often produced. However, fillers are considered as additional utterances produced by speakers to communicate naturally with the listeners. They help the speakers to shift one idea to another to make the listeners understand the meaning conveyed by the speakers easily. This study investigated twenty English public speaking videos and looked for the variation of fillers uttered by the speakers. The results showed that so, err, and umm were the frequent fillers uttered. The use of these fillers had various functions such as to introduce the speaker’ ideas, to gain audience’s attention, or to give time for the speakers to search for the word.

Abstract

This paper discussed women’s language features used by female students in English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) as English teacher within teaching learning practices in micro-teaching class. The study aimed to investigate the frequency of the women’s language features and the possible reason of using the features by female students. The writer assumed that women have characteristics in speaking, including female English teacher candidates. Unconsciously, female English teacher candidates use some or all of women’s language features when they are doing teaching practice in Micro Teaching class. These features indicate that actually, if a woman or a female English teacher candidate uses most of the features, that she is not really sure about what she is uttering to the pupils in English learning activities. Besides that, a teacher should be confident in delivering materials or teaching the pupils. Those features have been discussed by Robin Lakoff in one of her books entitled Language and Woman’s place. In that book, she writes about ten language features which are usually used by the women when they are speaking. Therefore, it encouraged the writer to conduct a paper about women’s language used by female students in ELESP as English teacher candidates.

Abstract

Communication is very important to our life. It is a kind of media that used to express our intentions, ideas, feelings or information to the listeners or audiences. One of important aspects in the communication is speech acts. Speech acts consist of many categories; one of them is exclamatory and expressive utterances. This study aims to identify exclamatory and expressive utterances performed in the Lion King movie (1994). Likewise, it will find out the type of exclamatory and expressive utterances that are most frequently used in the movie and the other expressive utterances that are found. This study used the qualitative method, reading the transcript, watching the movie and library research. The study also revealed the importance of learning types of utterances in and unique utterances that. This study is expected to give some useful insights into understanding what exclamatory and expressive utterances are.

Abstract

Translation of written texts has been a part of international communication for centuries, but courses in how to do it are more recent. This study reports a case study from the context of a Moroccan university where translation courses are taught in two parts. In one semester the students learn about translation from English to Arabic and the next from Arabic to English. We report the teachers’ perspectives on the translation course from Arabic into English, along with the results of the students’ translations based on 400 examination answers. The analysis and discussion of the results will reveal the shortcomings for the current teaching practice of translation; they will also suggest new ways of customizing the course for more effective acquisition of English language as a medium for boosting intercultural communication, the most probable prerequisite for today’s access in the job market.
