Abstract

Teaching practicum is a compulsory course for students majoring in education program. Through teaching practicum, student teachers can gain experiences before becoming real teachers. However, there are some students who still feel anxious towards teaching practicum. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the factors contributing to student teachers’ anxiety during teaching practicum and the strategies to cope with the anxiety. The participants of this study were six student teachers who had done their teaching practicum at a private senior high school in Central Java. The data were collected qualitatively by using semi-structured interviews to get in-depth information from the participants. The findings revealed that facing a new environment, school teachers and students’ attitudes, lesson plans and teaching materials, the ways of presenting the materials, time management, availability of AVAs, and observation by mentor teachers and the supervisor were the factors that contributed to student teachers’ anxiety during teaching practicum. The strategies used by student teachers to cope with their anxiety were adapting themselves with the new environment, preparing well before teaching, building good rapport with school teachers and students, creating a good learning environment, prioritizing the most crucial teaching part, and doing relaxation.

Myriad studies have been discussing the role of subtitle for improving students’ vocabulary mastery. Yet, the use of English subtitle in Korean dramas is scarcely explored. Within a qualitative approach, this study aims at investigating how Indonesian EFL university students employ Korean dramas with English subtitle for improving their vocabulary. Twenty-three EFL university students were involved to participate in this study. Interview and questionnaire were applied as data collection methods. The results of the study revealed that the students enjoyed learning vocabulary through English subtitle while watching Korean dramas. Pedagogically, this study implies that learning vocabulary can be done in regards with the students’ interests, including watching Korean dramas. Further research focusing on the employment of English subtitle for improving reading skill is interestingly to be carried out.

This paper aims to describe the teachers’ role in applying multisensory approach in Primary English Home-based learning, find the benefits and challenges in applying multisensory approach, and provide strategies to overcome the challenges. This study uses qualitative descriptive as the research method and the data was taken from the researcher’s reflections, lesson plans, observation reports and mentor’s feedback. This study shows that multisensory approach positively promoted engagement in primary English home-based learning. Several classroom activities that can be used in applying multisensory approach are Total Physical Response, color codes, storytelling, art & craft, and interactive PowerPoint. The challenges occurred from technicalities and monitoring the students’ behavior. Therefore, parents’ involvement is highly required to monitor students’ behavior in home-based learning process. For the next researcher, it is suggested to find ways to maximize home-based learning by maintaining social interaction among students.

Abstract

AbstractGender inequality issues are issues that are still often found in daily life. Evidently, the issues do not only happen in the action of real-life but previous researches have also discovered that gender inequality does exist in textbooks in the form of how genders are being represented unequally. With this gender representations issue emerging, this research aims to identify and analyze the gender representations in the ELT textbook titled “Bahasa Inggris Untuk SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X”. It is important to know if the genders are being represented equally because the books which exclude one or more gender can affect its readers and or users. To reach the goal stated this research used a qualitative method with a content analysis approach. The analysis of the data which was taken both from the texts as well as from the illustrations shows that there are many characteristics that only represent a specific gender and not the others. From the occupational activities that are only explored often by men, to domestic items that are attached to women. It can be concluded that the BI textbook has not represented genders equally. Some genders are stillexcluded in several activities, attributes, and designations.
