The papers will include research reports that bring the new insight of the existing theories, critical review of current theories, and literary review. Abstract

Penelitian ini mengambil objek wanita karena memang dalam konstruksi tubuh wanita, waitalah yang menjadi pangsa pasar. Citra yang dibentuk tentang kecantikan adalah yang memiliki kulit halus, lembut, segar, dan bercahaya. Untuk mencapai target pemasaran, pendekatan yang paling dekat untuk menganalisis “Sari Ayu Beauty Lotion” sebagai iklan kecantikan wanita dalam konteks globalisasi sekarang ini, tubuh perempuan dikomoditaskan. Analisis ini menggunakan pendekatan semiotika untuk mengungkap makna iklan yang disampaikan untuk kepentingan penjualan, pembelian, dan konsumsi produk sebagai proses komunikasi. Semiotik iklan merupakan proses pertukaran pesan. Teks yang dapat dipahami di dunia ini begitu banyak. Salah satunya membaca iklan. Iklan “Sari Ayu Beauty Lotion” ini menggali tradisi dan mitos kecantikan tempo doeloe. Segala sesuatu yang berhubungan dengan masa lampau, memiliki nilai yang tinggi. Tradisi membuat lulur dan melulurkannya ke seluruh badan ini mengandung nilai-nilai budaya yang tinggi, adiluhung, dan sangat dihormati. Dengan produk ini, Sari Ayu Cosmetics mengangkat nilai-nilai budaya Jawa dalam iklannya. Perempuan Jawa harus bisa ngadi Sarira dan ngadi busana, yakni 3M (macak, manak, dan masak).

Abstract

This study performs the model of the end product of language artist namely Henry James denoting the perfection of craftsmanship equipped with the figure of a lady that behaves far from mere the sheep on the flock. Henry James in The Portrait of a Lady used the exaggeration of the lady’s character to heighten the tension of his mission to search perfection that exhibited something as better or worse than it really is. The shadow of valuing the given character that determined to have an odd choice in her life postulated the congruence within incongruence between what the readers expected and the deed of a lady character. The design of this study initiated with the main theme that is the perfection of workmanship comprising of three sub heading first, the centrality of vision; second, the harmony of a studio life; and the last, the landscape of an American literary tradition. The study operates the aesthetical perspective adopted from Response to Literature by William J. Grace. The conclusion of this aesthetical perspective depicts the dramatic situation of life in which the lady character prefers to confront the will to perfect instead of the will to power in the arena of modern world where the money generally deemed the God.

Abstract

This research is the study of metaphorical expressions of temperature terms used as source domain. Researcher takes dialogs and narratives in the novel Answered Prayers by Sydney Sheldon as data source. Qualitativedescriptive research is used by collecting metaphorical expression whichused temperature terms as source domain based on the conceptualmetaphor theory. Researcher finds that there are four target domains ofmetaphorical expressions using temperature terms; they are affection,emotional intensity, personality and physical appearance (related to afashionable appearance). From those four target domains, the highestnumber is the conceptual metaphor of AFFECTION is TEMPERATUREwith 23 metaphorical expressions. It also appears in this research thathuman’s experiential basis to temperature influence the terms used inmetaphorical expressions.

Abstract

This research is based on the fact in the literary novel entitled “The Invention of Wings” imaginary form of the family. Gender in thisresearch is based on the construction of the social relations of the menand the women of gender bias. Construction of social nuances patriarchalin the novel as the implications of social context into the reality or thefacts in the literature. there are also the social context in which thebackground is a novel culture highlights issues in SouthGeorgia.Focuseson the analysis of women as representation in the workof literature using gender perspective. Thepublic expression of the formor expressions can become a myth to women. As a result, womenexperienced injustice in the form marginalization, subordination,stereotypes, violence. Women who have experienced injustice in the “TheInvention of Wings” are the daughter grandparent, mother, and Ivory. Thethree of different generations have experienced injustice in a way. It canmake self-awareness in the last two generations of the women. Byshowing the authorities themselves in the men are expected therecognitions and canbe sparedfrom dominance that tends to demeanwomen.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the depiction of the inner nature of dream’sexpression in Poe’s three selected poems to expose the dynamic vibration of desire, emotion, thought from the modification of mind. The perspective onthe omniscient narration of Poe’s is depicted to the three dream poemswithin which the inner nature of the character, including the past hopes,thoughts, feelings and the will to liberate the pain. The analysis adopts theauthorical voice models which operates the speaker within the literaryworks of dream theme. For Poe, The vision and the predicament of youngadulthood, and the dreams in the mid adult men should be a spirit guiding,the best learning of realities, and a lovely semblance of realities in theircoloring of life respectively. They should be deamed as the landscape of akind of huge spider-web of the expression within the finest silken threads ofthe will, desire, and thought. Poe was the opinion that the imaginary in themind of human being, the belief within the innermost of the heart, and theachievement toward any probabilities are the dynamic mind in motion liketraveling to the medium of an expression of the dream’s vision.

Abstract

Dalam mengajar, guru cenderung menggunakan bahasa lisan, makadiharapkan selama proses belajar mengajar, guru menguasai keterampilanberbahasa lisan pada waktu menjelaskan pelajaran. Sementara itu, Ellis(1986:166) mengemukakan bahwa bahasa guru (pengajar) atau seringdisebut teacher talk merupakan ragam bahasa yang khusus digunakanoleh guru untuk berinteraksi dengan siswa dalam konteks belajarmengajar. Austin (1962) mengemukakan bahwa mengujarkan sebuahkalimat tertentu dapat dipandang sebagai melakukan tindakan (act), disamping memang mengucapkan kalimat tersebut. Ia membedakan tigajenis tindakan yang berkaitan dengan ujaran, yaitu lokusi, ilokusi, danperlokusi. Sementara itu, Searle mengembangkan jenis uturanberdasarkan kategorinya, yaitu (1) tindak tutur representatif (asertif), (2)tindak tutur direktif, (3) tindak tutur ekspresif, (4) tindak tutur komisif, (5)deklaratif . Penelitian ini difokuskan pada fungsi tindak tutur ekspresif. Hasilpenelitian menunjukkan fungsi tuturan ekspresif dalam interaksi kelasbahasa Indonesia di SMP Negeri 2 Malang dan SMA Tamansiswa, antaralain: 1) Interaksi kelas bahasa Indonesia SMP ditemukan fungsi tindaktutur mengekpresikan salam, rasa humor, dan nasihat dan 2) Interaksikelas bahasa Indonesia SMA ditemukan fungsi tindak tuturmengekspresikan salam, teguran, sindiran, rasa humor, nasihat, dan mencela.

Abstract

This research is the study of the difficulties faced by students of semester V faculty of Letters, Balikpapan University in translating a culture-specifictext from English to Indonesian Language. The research is qualitative; datacollecting is done by distributing the text contains American culture ofbaseball sports to translate and interviewing students to identify theirdifficulties. From the result, it is concluded that the difficulties faced bystudents in translating the texts is caused by their lack of understanding ofthe Source Language culture, in this case , the baseball sports, their poorknowledge of the sport itself and their low experience in reading adiscourse from the same context. It is recommended for translation subjectlecturer to provide students a broad knowledge of the cultural context ofsource language to help them improve their translation skills.

Abstract

Implementation of the policy carried out by the Dutch to the indigenousshow that domination conducted by the Netherlands could instill theideology that run at the time of colonialism. This study seeks to examinethe ideology of the Dutch, especially associated with political andeconomic policies, and their effect on indigenous people that oppressed,appear in the novel Max Havelaar by Multatuli as a research object.Researcher uses the theory of hegemony by Antonio Gramsci to analyzehow the party that has domination possesses an internal control to thesubordinates. Through deeper analysis, it is found that there are varieties ofpolitical and economic policies that automatically give bad effect for theoppressed indigenous, both physically and psychologically. Abstract

The case of proper name is unique. In one hand, a proper name canonly refer to a specific entity, in the other hand, it also subject tofigurative use. Bill Gates, the name of the Microsoft founder is oneexample of how proper noun are used not to refer to a singleindividual, but is extended to refer to specific properties whichpossesses by Bill Gates.. This research aims to identify the transferredproperties embedded in the use of proper names i.e, Bill Gatesfiguratively and the objective of using the name as metonymy. Theresearch is qualitative; the data are taken from Corpus ofContemporary American English (COCA), in order to achieve thirtydata, the amount of 422 data from COCA is examined. The resultshows, that from 30 metonymic use of Bill Gates, there are tenassociative properties assigned to the metonymic use of Bill Gates,which are a very famous person, the richest person, a very successfulentrepreneur (In Computer Technology), a successful drop-out college,philanthropist, a pioneer of particular field, a computer geek, anindividual with a brilliant ideas at the first stage of business, multipleproperties assigned, and a very successful person in his field. Abstract

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this research is to analyze the resistence to the role ofgender by Elizabeth in the novel Pride and Prejudice, a work of JaneAusten, having a general issu on the limitation of woman’s right.Elizabeth did not have right to choose a husband. She received apressure from her mother to have a rich husband no matter she lovedhim or not. In analyzing this novel, the author used De Witt’sopposition theory (1979) used to analyze woman’s resistence. Thetheory states that consensus have never been fully achieved in acommunity, and those who disagree someday will carry out anopposition performed overtly and secretly.From the discussion of this paper, the author concluded that theopposition performed by Elizabeth opposed the custom applied in thecommunity, and she insisted that woman also has the right to be freein selecting the choice of life, spouse, and determining attitude.Key words : Resistence, Gender Role, De Witt’s opposition theory
