Prologue: Journal on Language and Literature published by Faculty of Letters, Balikpapan University. It is published twice a year, namely March and September. It publishes papers in language and literature. The scopes of the topics include but not limited to (1) Literature; (2) Linguistics; (3) Applied Linguistics, and; (4) Cultural Studies. The papers will include research reports that bring the new insight of the existing theories, critical review of current theories, and literary review. Abstract

This research studies of code mixing as communicative function in the novel Sold for Silver by Janet Lim. There are two questions proposed, they are what are the types of code mixing used and how is communicative function expressed with code mixing in the novel. The theory used in this research is sociolinguistics theory with the analysis using Wardaugh theory of code mixing; the methodology employed is qualitative research in which the researcher tried to present the issues descriptively. The researcher collected the data from the novel as the primary data of this research. The result of this research is the researcher found the type of code mixing used and it is classified into two types; intra-sententially and inter-sententially. Meanwhile, the researcher also found metalingual function, emotive function, referential function, poetic function and conative function expressed with code mixing used by the characters to show what is the meaning of the speaker in the sentence

Abstract

The scope of the study is the limitation of the focus of the research. This research is focused on the metaphor found in flouting maxims and the way metaphor influences the emotion of characters in the novel The Fault in Our Stars. There are some aspects pragmatics that influenced human language. The researcher tries to find the implied meaning by analyzing the flouting maxim in the novel The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. The type of research is descriptive qualitative study. In this research, the source of primary data is derived from a novel entitled The Fault in Our Stars by John Green was published in 2012. In this research, the researcher analyses implicature in the novel, such as words, clauses, sentences, and conversations between characters, and flouting maxims. Identifying and selecting the data based on the types of metaphor and flouting maxims. Findings of this research are 20 excerpts metaphor in floating maxim. They are 8 excerpts categorized in structural metaphor, 9 excerpts categorized in ontology metaphor, and 3 excerpts categorized in orientational metaphor. These metaphors are found from 11 flouting maxim of manner, 4 flouting maxim of quality and 5 flouting maxim of quantity.

Abstract

Transferring is an activity of transferring and changing from one form of work to another. One form of transfer of rides can be found, namely the story of Princess Karang Melenu to the Carving of the Karang Nungkul Pond which is usually carried out during the Beluluh Sultan traditional procession during Erau. The transfer is carried out by utilizing aesthetic theory and comparative literary approaches to analyze the findings as well as to find out the comparison between the two objects, both in general and in their aesthetic presentation. Furthermore, from this comparison it can be seen the benefits of the transfer. The results of the research are generally obtained from the comparison of omissions, subtractions, additions, and replacements of images from the story of Princess Karang Melenu into nungkul coral carvings. Meanwhile, in terms of aesthetic presentation, the results obtained are in the form of wholeness, prominence, and balance which refers to the ideology and identity of the Kutai Kartanegara Sultanate. This transfer is also useful in strengthening or strengthening the roots of Kutai culture and can be used as a medium of learning in schools.

Abstract

Up until today, most people living in East Kalimantan still have a little knowledge and understanding about their folktales. This might be caused by the limited availability of the stories everywhere, including on the internet. This paper aims to report on the availability of online-based East Kalimantan folktales by searching on the web, utilizing the most commonly used search engines in Indonesia. The search found that only 17 folktales are available worldwide, and most of these texts and non-texts materials have yet to exist in decent or official forms. This calls for a quick action of preservation in order not to let these cultural assets to extinct in the middle of the threat from the vast growing internet and mainstream entertainment.

Abstract

This research is focused on the cultural belief of arranged marriage as a patriarchal system toward freedom of choice in I am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced by Delphine Minoui. This research aims to identify the obstacles to a cultural belief in an arranged marriage in the novel and to reveal the effect of obstacles to arranged marriage on woman’s freedom. The purpose of this research is to reveal the cultural belief about arranged marriage in Yemen society and to determine the effect of arranged marriage. The methodology employed is descriptive qualitative. As for the data, the primary data is from the novel. Secondary data in this study contains the text that supports the theories such as: cultural studies, supporting theory radical feminism and feminism existentialism from books, e-books, thesis and journals. The result of this research is the main characters reveal the cultural belief of arranged marriage happened in Yemen is the obstacle that makes the main character decide to get her freedom of choice.

Abstract

The research focuses on the forms of depression that happen and the effect of personality alteration in The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. The aim of this research is to find the forms of depression and effects to personality alteration. The theory used in this research is Psychoanalysis theory by Carl Jung and Aaron Beck's theory of depression to find the forms of depression. The methodology employed is qualitative research in which the researcher presents the issue descriptively. As for the data, they were collected from the text of the novel. The novel is the primary data. Based on the results of this study, the researcher found that depression has more effects on extrovert personality alteration and emotional depression is the greatest effect.

Abstract

This research aims to find the types of speech acts and to explain how the effect toward behavior of main character in Real Steel movie. The researcher uses speech act theory by Austin and Searle to discuss the type and effect toward behavior of the main character in the movie. The method used in this research is qualitative method that explained descriptively. Qualitative research is a research conducted with the source of data that comes in form of writing and descriptive means that the researcher would describe the collected data descriptively throughout the thesis. The results found the types of speech acts namely locution, illocution, and perlocution. locution consists of five classifications, Illocution itself consists of five types, namely assertive, descriptive, commissive, expressive, and declaration. While perlocution itself consists of twelve types, but the researcher only found five types contained in the dialogue to convince the listener, scare the listener, to remind the listener, to make the listener do something, and to make the listener aware of something. As for the effect on behavior, the researcher concludes in two parts, namely whether includes in a positive effect or negative effect on the behavior of the speaker or speech partner.

Abstract

A character is an essential element in a literary work, especially a movie. Each character in a story has a different mental or psychological condition. This study aims to analyze the hierarchy of human needs contained in the main character named Einar Wegener in The Danish Girl movie directed by Tom Hopper. The theory used in this movie is the psychological theory by Abraham Maslow. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The results of this study show that the main character, Einar Wegener, succeeded in fulfilling his four basic needs consisting of physiological needs, security needs, love and belongingness, and self-esteem. However, there is one need that he failed to fulfill, namely self-actualization.

Abstract

The research discusses about the syntactic meaning in the syntax category that is specifically included in the form of ecolexicon, representing the environmental symbolic reality. The syntax categories are focused on elaborating the phrases and sentences consisting of the specific ecolexicon: biotic and abiotic references. This research is focused on the syntactic meaning that represents the environmental symbolic reality found in The Lorax novel by Dr. Seuss. There are two objectives for the purpose of this research, 1) to identify the forms of the syntactic meaning of the environment in the novel The Lorax by Dr. Seuss and 2) to describe the forms of syntactic meaning representing the environmental symbolic reality in The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. This research uses the Ecolinguistics theory from Fill & Mühlhäusler. The researcher uses a qualitative method explaining descriptively based on this research using a library study as a reference. The research's result found ten forms of syntactic meaning divided into six phrases with 14 data and four sentences with 19 data. Then, the representation of the environmental symbolic reality consists of Waste Disposal and Pollution with 11 data, Endangered Species 10 data, Climate Change 1 data, Water 1 data, and Deforestation 10 data.

Abstract

This thesis studies the types of child maltreatment and its influence on young adult attachment style in the novel Needlework by Deirdre Sullivan. The aims of this research are: 1) To find out the types of child maltreatment in the novel Needlework by Deirdre Sullivan, and 2) To describe the child maltreatment that influences young adult attachment style in the novel Needlework by Deirdre Sullivan. The theory used in this research is Perrin’s child maltreatment theory and Bartholomew’s attachment theory. This research used qualitative methodology research, which is presented descriptively. The researcher collected the data from the excerpt related to the theory in the novel Needlework, written by Deirdre Sullivan and published in 2016. The final result of this research is the researcher found 74 data of child maltreatment influencing young adult attachment style with the most dominant data of child maltreatment is neglect with 40% of the data (30 out of 74 data) which is influencing the young adult attachment style of the character into fearful-avoidant as much as 50% data (15 out of 30 data).
