Prologue: Journal on Language and Literature published by Faculty of Letters, Balikpapan University. It is published twice a year, namely March and September. It publishes papers in language and literature. The scopes of the topics include but not limited to (1) Literature; (2) Linguistics; (3) Applied Linguistics, and; (4) Cultural Studies. The papers will include research reports that bring the new insight of the existing theories, critical review of current theories, and literary review. Abstract

The aim of this research is to explore the kinds of human exploitation and social inequality in the novel “Oliver Twist”. The objectives of this research are to find and to describe the forms of human exploitation in the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, and to find the connection between social inequality and human exploitation in the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. The theory used in this research is exploitation and social inequality based in Marxism theory by Karl Marx. The methodology is qualitative research in which the researcher used to present the issues descriptively. The data were collected from the narration and dialogue in the novel, the data were analyzed descriptively using the theory.After going through the analysis, the researcher concludes that the forms of human exploitation in the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens are child exploitation which consist of doing anything as compulsory, fact manipulated, unequal treatment, unequal facility, cruel punishment also child trafficking, and the other one are women exploitation which consist of become a servant and prostitute. Whereas the connection between social inequality and exploitation is triggered by the class differences between the upper class dan the lower class.

Abstract

This research studies about the correlation language and gender with the variety of woman’s language feature in the main character Rebecca Bloomwood in the Confession of Shopaholic movie. There are two objectives that become the purpose of this study; 1) To find the variety of woman’s language feature in the main character Rebecca Bloomwood in the Confession of Shopaholic movie and 2) To find the woman’s language correlate to gender in the main character in the Confession of Shopaholic movie. The theory used in this research is the Sociolinguistic approach by using the theory of Robin Lakoff about woman’s language features and women’s language correlate to gender. The methodology used in this study is qualitative research to explain the data, because the data are analyzed and described in the form of words and sentences. The data are taken from the conversations uttered by the main character as female character. The result of the research, the researcher finds ten variety of woman’s language such as precise color terms, avoiding using strong word, empty adjective, tag question, avoiding using strong word, lexical hedges, intensifier, emphatic stress, hypercorrect grammar, and super polite form. Regarding the reason by using the feature is most the feature of variety woman’s language has been found in the main character. Those features show woman’s correlations to gender that women tend to reflect uncertainty, and their lack of confidence in conversation. This research finds woman’s language is super polite than man, women’s talk more evaluative and emotional than man’s language.

Abstract

There are objectives that become the purpose of this research: 1) to describe the factors cause the political discrimination against black people in America in 1960s as reflected in the novel Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee and 2) to find the strategy of political discrimination against black people in America in 1960s portray in the novel Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee. The theory used in this research is the Sociology of Literature and hegemony theory by Gramsci about dominance and direction/leadership and discrimination as supporting theory. The methodology employed is qualitative research which the researcher aims to study the the issue of political discrimination and the factors cause the political discrimination. In the process of collecting data, the researcher collected from primary and secondary data. The primary data is the story and relation issue in the novel which about the factors causing political discrimination and the strategy of political discrimination against black people in America in 1960s. The researcher concludes that the issue reflected in the novel, there are some factors causing the political discrimination against black people, they are dominance and direction/leadership which is the phase of hegemony. The strategy of political discrimination against black people are discrimination in accepting the equality as the opportunity in part of government agency, discrimination in sharing the responsibility of citizenship and discrimination of the rights to vote. Those discrimination has the purpose to limiting black people become the participant of board council.

Abstract

This research explores the analysis of the type of translation procedures and the degree of meaning equivalence used in translating cultural words in the novel Semua Anak Bangsa by Pramoedya Ananta Toer into Child of All Nations by Max Lane. The objectives of this research are first, to find the types of translation procedures are used by a translator to translate cultural words in the novel Child of All Nations and second, to identify how cultural word translation to achieve the degree of meaning equivalence. The theory used is the translation procedures by Newmark and meaning equivalence by Bell. The methodology used is qualitative research in which the researcher presents the issues descriptively. As for data, they were collected from the cultural words in the dialogue and narration in the novel. After going through the analysis, the researcher concludes eleven translation procedures are used by the translator in this translation. There are transference, naturalization, cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, descriptive equivalent, through-translation, shifts or transpositions, synonymy, compensation, couplets, and notes-additions-glosses. The commonly procedure is cultural equivalent. The degrees of meaning equivalence are fully equivalent, partly equivalent, and different meaning. The commonly degree of meaning equivalence is fully equivalent.

Abstract

This research aims to find the use of code-switching to show empathy. There are two objectives of this research; 1) to identify the types of code-switching used in Breakout Music Program on NET TV and 2) to describe how code-switching shows empathy in Breakout Music Program on NET TV. The theories used in this study are; the types of code-switching by Romaine to answer the research question number one, and the reason to do code-switching by Hoffman to answer the research question number two. Based on the result of this research, the researcher found that all types of code-switching proposed by Romaine are found in Breakout music program. Furthermore, all seven reasons in using code-switching are also found in Breakout music program, however the most dominant reason for doing code-switching is to show empathy and the least dominant reason is to quote somebody else.

Abstract

Tulisan ini berjudul Perspektif Laki-Laki Jawa terhadap Perempuan dalam Cerpen Ande Ande Lumut Karya Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim dan Dongeng Ande-Ande Lumut Karya Tira Ikranegara dengan menggunakan kajian struktur naratif. Struktur naratif dalam cerpen Ande-Ande Lumut karya Ratna Indraswari ibrahim dan dongeng Ande-Ande Lumut karya Tira Ikranegara memperlihatkan formula penceritaan cerita romantis yang berkisah sepasang kekasih saling mencintai dan dihadapkan pada masalah namun pada akhirnya mereka bersatu. Walaupun dengan plot yang berbeda antara cerpen dengan dongengnya, keseluruhan cerita mempunyai inti atau dasar cerita yang sama dengan melibatkan ketertarikan artistik dan kultur penciptaan cerita itu sendiri. Hal tersebut akan efektif bergantung kerangka kerja penerimaan imajinasi, pengalaman dan ketertarikan pembaca.Hasil analisis diperoleh bahwa sosok perempuan dari sudut pandang laki-laki Jawa yang sebagian besar mengharapkan bahwa ia harus dapat memahami makna ma telu, masak, macak, dan manak. Pandangan demikian, telah mengantarkan posisi “terhormat” di hadapan laki-laki, saat itu. Selain itu, perempuan diharapkan dapat menjaga baik buruk nama suami walaupun ada kepedihan di sana karena pada akhirnya ia akan mendapatkan hadiah terbaik akan kekuatan yang dimilikinya untuk menjadi perempuan yang dapat dihargai.

Abstract

This research analyzes about the signs represented social values in the novel Paper Towns.There are two objectives that become the purpose of this study: 1) to explain the types ofsocial values in the novel Paper Towns by John Green and 2) to analyze the signs whichreveal the social values in the novel Paper Towns by John Green. The theory used in thisresearch is the Semiotics approach by using theory of Charles Sanders Peirce, there areQualisign, Sinsign and Legisign. The methodology used in this study is descriptivequalitative research to explain the data, because the data are analyzed in the form of wordsand sentences. The data are taken from the sentences and the conversation in the text in thenovel Paper Towns by John Green. The result of the research, the researcher found 4 typesof social values. There are stimulation, hedonism, security, and conformity. The researcherfound signs of words in the novel and analyze the signs using Charles Sanders Peirce'stheory and then the researcher revealed social values through signs based on the types ofsocial values by Schawartz.

Abstract

This study aims to find the social belongingness as the need to the interpersonal feelings. There are two objectives in this research 1) to find out the social belongingness happen in the society 2) to describe how the social belonging as the need effect the interpersonal feelings in the novel Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. This research is based on Psychology of Humanistic theory by Abraham Maslow’s theory of hierarchy of needs. Based on the result of this research, the researcher found the emerge of social belongingness need effecting the interpersonal feelings in the novel Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

Abstract

This thesis explores the feudalist symbols towards behavior in the novel The Girl Who Came Home by Hazel Gaynor. There are two objectives of this research; 1) to identify the forms of the feudalist symbols found in the novel The Girl Who Came Home by Hazel Gaynor and 2) to identify how the feudalist symbols influence the behavior found in the novel The Girl Who Came Home by Hazel Gaynor. The theory used in this research is the semiotic using Roland Barthes theory of feudalist symbols; the methodology employed is qualitative research in which the researcher tried to present the issues descriptively. As for the data, they were collected from the words and sentences in the novel. The words and sentences in the novel were taken out as the primary data. The result of the research, the researcher finds that are eight forms of the feudalist symbols in The Girl Who Came Home by Hazel Gaynor, the forms are: 1) Want to always be respected 2) Limiting the association 3) The title of education 4) Dressing excessive 5) Showing off the wealth 6) The using of language 7) Limiting the unnecessary time 8) Disrespecting others. The researcher also finds the feudalist symbols influence the behavior, those are; Desperate, Arrogant and Selfish.

Abstract

This research explores how the maxim violation can portray personality of characters inthe novel The Three Button Trick and Other Stories by Nicola Barker. The researchobjectives are; to find out the types of maxim violations appear in the novel and to knowhow maxim violation can portray personality of the characters in the novel The ThreeButton Trick and Other Stories by Nicola Barker. The theories used in this research aremaxim violation introduced by Paul Grice as the main theory conducted to explain aboutthe maxim violation phenomena. Besides that, Personality Traits Theory as known as ‘ FiveFactor Theory’ by McCrae and Costa to depict the personality owned by the characterswho violate maxims in the novel The Three Button Trick and Other Stories by NicolaBarker. As the result of the research, the researcher found that maxim violation, behaviorsand personality are interchangeable and interconnected. At the time a speaker performsmaxim violation by which generate other interpretation of what it is said withincommunication, the utterance apparently portrays the speaker’s personality throughout themeaning, true intention and behavior it is conveyed.
