Prologue: Journal on Language and Literature published by Faculty of Letters, Balikpapan University. It is published twice a year, namely March and September. It publishes papers in language and literature. The scopes of the topics include but not limited to (1) Literature; (2) Linguistics; (3) Applied Linguistics, and; (4) Cultural Studies. The papers will include research reports that bring the new insight of the existing theories, critical review of current theories, and literary review. Abstract

This research explores two objectives; 1) to identify the types of address terms found in Deadpool Max volume 1 comic. 2) to describe the taboo words used as mockery terms in Deadpool Max volume 1 comic. The theory used in this research is the sociolinguistics analysis using Wardhaugh’s theory. The methodology employed is qualitative research in which the researcher tried to present the issues descriptively. The data were in the form of utterances, while the dialogue uttered from Deadpool Max volume 1 comic was the primary data source. Then various journal, books and internet to support the data analysis were the secondary data source. The results of this research are stated as follows. Firstly, seven types of address terms are found in the comic. 78 total data appear, there are, First Name (FN), Title Alone (T), Title plus Last Name (TLN), Special Nick Name (SN), Pet Name (PN), Kinship Terms (KT), and Mockery Terms (MT). Secondly, the taboo words used as mockery terms are found, and there are 2 reasons of using taboo words; to show anger and to mock.

Abstract

The development literature is inseparable from the medium used. Human creativity to package his work, in this case with regard to literature is a form of culture that also will not come off with the medium. One of the media used to pack the literary work is a visual medium. Furthermore, the literature is termed as "visual literature". Visual Literature is literature, particularly stories that poured into visual images. Examples of visual literature in Indonesia can be seen starting megalithic era until modern times that temple reliefs, Wayang Beber, up to the comic. Through visualization, particularly in the form of comic literature is packed using the language of images at once the language of text that can imitate the sound or motion that is not possible as long as written. Images are further highlight certain symbols also have a purpose that facilitates the reader's understanding of the various parties, groups, and levels.

Abstract

This research explores types of maxim flouting in 12 Years A Slave’s Movie and aims to identify the types of maxim flouting in 12 Years A Slave movie and to seek out the relation of maxim flouting to the illocutionary function of politeness. The pragmatic analysis using H. P. Grice’s theory of maxim flouting is used with descriptive methodology. The movie scripts were taken as the primary data. Researcher found that there are four types of maxim flouting performed by Solomon Northup; and the relation of maxim flouting to the illocutionary function of politeness are competitive, collaborative, convivial, and conflictive.

Abstract

This research focuses on the psychology of a character in the novel Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. There are two objectives in this study; 1). To find out the types of anxiety experienced by the character in the novel Me Before You by Jojo Moyes and; 2). To explain how self-defense mechanism works to overcome anxiety in the novel Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. This study uses Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory regarding anxiety and defense mechanism; the methodology employed is qualitative research in which the researcher tried to present the issues descriptively. The main data sources in this study were taken from the form of dialogs, descriptions, and sentences contained in the novel Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. The results of this study, the researcher concluded that there were three types of anxiety experienced by the character in the novel Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, namely neurotic, moral and realistic anxiety. To overcome this anxiety the character uses four types of defense mechanisms namely displacement, reaction formation, rationalization, and sublimation. The most effective type of self-defense mechanism to overcome the anxieties that arise in character is rationalization because an individual where the reality that is lived is all based on logic and rationality.

Abstract

This journal investigated the feature of female language in the Novel entitled Love Rosie. There are two objectives of this research; 1) to identify the type of feature female language used by the main character in the novel Love Rosie and 2) to describe which female language feature supports the communication style. The type of research was qualitative descriptive because the data were analyzed and described in the form of words and sentences. The data were taken from the conversations that is uttered by the main character of Love Rosie the novel. The conversation in the novel was taken out as the primary data. The theory used in this research is the sociolinguistics analysis using Robin Lakoff's theory of female language feature and supported by Deborah Tannen's theory of communication styles in women's conversation. The result of the research, the researcher found that the features of female language found in the novel Love Rosie there are eight types, super polite forms, tag questions, empty adjectives, logical hedges, strong avoidance of words, price color terms, intensifiers, and emphatic stress. The female language feature that is the most widely used main character supports the communication style that tends to use indirect communication styles.

Abstract

This research analyses how the patriarchy system acts as the trigger of sexual coercion as reflected in the novel Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu. The objectives of this research are 1) to determine the forms of sexual coercion in the novel Moxie, and 2) to determine how the patriarchy system triggers sexual coercion in the novel Moxie. The researcher used Alison M. Jaggar’s radical feminism theory as the main theory and Smuts's and Smuts’ theory of sexual coercion as the supporting theory in analyzing the collected data. Jaggar’s radical feminism theory is used to analyze how the patriarchy system triggers sexual coercion while Smuts and Smuts’ theory is used to analyze the forms of sexual coercion. The research methodology of this research is qualitative descriptive; in which the relevant data were collected from the text found in the novel Moxie. This research resulted in direct coercion such as sexual harassment, intimidation, and rape as the form of sexual coercion found in the novel Moxie. This research also resulted in patriarchal ideology and patriarchal stereotypes being the triggers of direct coercion in a patriarchal society.

Abstract

There are two objectives of this research; to identify the types of deixis used in the utterances in the novel The Kite Runner; and to explain the references of using deixis found in the novel. The method used in this research is the qualitative descriptive method because the data were analyzed in the form of words and utterances. The theory used in this research is the Deixis theory by Stephen C. Levinson’s, also supported by the theory of references by Yule. The result of this research shows that there are five types of deixis found in the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, those are person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. The references of using deixis found anaphora and cataphora. Based on the data deixis that has been found and analyzed by the researcher in this research, person deixis is more dominant used in the novel, and for the use of references, anaphora reference is more dominant used than cataphora reference in the novel The Kite Runner.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of shadow towards the morality change in a utopian society in the novel From the New World by Yusuke Kishi. The focus is to identify the factors of shadow within the novel and to find how shadow triggers morality change in utopian society within the novel. The theory used in this research is psychoanalysis by Carl Jung, specifically shadow and morality. Shadow was used to examine the atrocities conducted within the novel and Carl Jung’s approach of morality was used to examine the morality change phenomenon in utopian society within the novel. The method used in this research is qualitative in a descriptive way. The researcher found the factors of shadow as ego, personal unconscious, and dark aspects of personality. Each of these factors is integral in how shadow triggers morality change in utopian society and the resulting changes found are within social, sexual, and intuitive morality. The research shows that shadow is the primary cause of morality changes happening within the novel and this research aims to prove whether shadow could be repressed in order to achieve perfect morality.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of optimism towards self-actualization fulfillment in the novel Pollyanna by Eleanor H.Porter. The objective of this research is to identify the reflection of optimism obtained. The theory used in this research is the Optimism approach and the Hierarchy of Needs by Abraham Maslow. This research uses the qualitative descriptive method in the analysis of the novel. The researcher found the reflection of optimism and the basic need obtain in order to fulfill self-actualization. There are categorized the existence, help, happiness, and joyfulness which as the optimism reflection that became impact in self-actualization fulfillment of the main character.

Abstract

This research focuses on the anxiety of Alice Howland in the novel Still Alice by Lisa Genova. There are two objectives of this research; 1) to find out the kinds of anxiety on Alice Howland in the novel Still Alice by Lisa Genova and 2) to explain the condition of Anxiety trigger the repressive Actions to Alice Howland in the Novel Still Alice by Lisa Genova. In this research the researcher used the theory is Psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud that talk about Anxiety and Defend Mechanism; the methodology employed is qualitative and the researcher present the issues descriptively and using the data collected from the novel were taken out as the primary data. The result the research was found the kinds of anxiety that occurred in Alice Howland namely hormonal anxiety, social anxiety and attack anxiety which could trigger repressive actions in Alice Howland and the researcher found several repressive actions in Still Alice's novel, namely repetition, moral felling and composing self.
