Abstract

Crime in the form of land use in the mining sector has experienced an alarming development. This study aims to reveal what legal remedies need to be done in land use. The data collected in this study used a normative juridical method. The results of the study indicate that there are strategies to overcome obstacles in the law enforcement process in mining practices, namely: First, to increase the professionalism and ability of law enforcement officials in investigating illegal mining crimes through education and training. Second, increasing the operationalization of illegal mining law enforcement by perfecting SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), and field guidelines (Juklap) for handling illegal mining crimes. Third, increasing cooperation with related agencies by drafting an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) and consistently and continuously coordinating efforts to optimize the synergy of illegal mining crimes. It is concluded that to protect the law against land use, of course, it is necessary to have the role of all relevant legal civil servants in directing land use properly.

Abstract

This study focused on the experiences of the first group of returned internally displaced people to be sheltered in Sagonsongan Temporary Shelters two years prior. Triangulation approach were employed to obtain data using a cross-sectional survey and simple random sampling. 221 important informants participated in the study. The objective of this study was to assess IDPs’ situation on the ground. In general, this study discovered three major issues that IDPs consistently faced: health and nutrition, livelihood, and sanitation. It was revealed that IDPs infrequently received dietary and health-related support and asserted confidently that they only received generic and 'not' healthy food products such as sardines, low-quality rice, and low-cost beans. Also, the shelter lacked adequate medical facilities and personnel to address the medical needs of IDPs, especially during emergencies. The drainage system was a potential source of dengue, leptospirosis, and other pathogens that pose a risk to human health due to its inadequate design, which inhibits precipitation from draining. Moreover, it was revealed that there was a lack of and insufficient livelihood support in the shelter. Capacity building was also a mismatch because there was no technical job available following the training. Hence, the relocation area is not conducive to sustaining a livelihood. In addition, it was determined that the level of sanitation in the shelter differs from one area to the next. Nevertheless, garbage disposal management in the area is often inadequate. As a result of inefficient waste management and an unhealthy environment, cockroaches, flies, and mosquitoes thrive

Abstract

Political parties are the engine wheel and the machinery on which the vehicle of democracy thrives. Democracies require sound parties with focused leadership and a clear ideology for national development on the assumption of power. In Nigeria, the two dominant ruling parties of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which ruled for sixteen years and the All Progressives Congress (APC) which is currently in its fifth year of ruling are pre-occupied with internal leadership crises which collapsed the former and are threatening to tear the latter today. The inability of the country’s political leaders to establish parties with a dedicated and pragmatic party leadership is affecting the democratic governance in the country despite having the experience of the longest experiment in the history of the country. The research utilised both primary and secondary sources of data. The primary sources of data consist of an in-depth personal interview with some selected stakeholders in the subject matter of study and direct participant observation. The secondary sources are documented materials such as books, journals, internet sources and other related documents. A suitable framework; Game Theory was adopted to support the views presented in the work. The data obtained were discussed, analysed and interpreted using thematic content analysis and statistical modules. The work discovered that the leadership crises in the two dominant parties in Nigeria are affecting democratic delivery and good governance because of the power tussle. The work recommends among others that the parties must develop a culture of internal democracy and ideological focus with a frame for national interest and development.

Abstract

If Afghanistan's current environmental problems are not addressed, the consequences could include severe water scarcity in some areas, which could threaten livelihoods, create environmental refugees, exacerbate adverse humanitarian conditions, and increase regional tensions. Therefore, the study was conducted in Sharana, the center of Paktika province, and was attended by 45 farmers. The goal of the research was to determine the major threats to Sharana's groundwater resources. For this study, questionnaires and field observations were chosen as techniques. according to the study's findings that drought, increased use of solar-powered submersibles, a lack of water management plan, a lack of regulations related to groundwater exploitations, and extensive use of underground water for irrigation due to farmers' lack of awareness and traditional irrigation systems are among the key challenges threatening groundwater in Paktika. Because the groundwater level has dropped, it is not unlikely that this situation may turn into a disaster if it continues. The primary components that can contribute to the sustainability of groundwater resources management in Paktika city are raising public knowledge about water resources management, switching to smart irrigation techniques, and adopting an integrated water resources management framework.

Abstract

Acknowledging the role of the youth in nation building as stated in the Republic Act also known as Youth in Nation-Building Act in the Philippines, youth organizations take part in the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law for the Bangsamoro people in the said country. However, various challenges have been faced. This study aimed to determine the challenges these youth organizations have experienced during their participation in the law’s ratification. It also sought to identify the coping mechanisms they have employed to cope with those challenges during the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law. To determine the challenges faced and coping mechanisms of the youth organizations, a qualitative type of research was used, and data was presented in narrative form. The participants which were selected purposely were officers of Al-Jalis As-Salih, Inc. (AAI); United Youth for Peace and Development (UNYPAD); Ittihadun – Nisa Foundation (INFO); Bangsamoro Youth Project Organization (BYPO); Young Centrist Union (YCU); and United Youth of the Philippines – Women (UNYPHIL). Purposive sampling was used in selecting the participants. The study found out that the youth organizations faced series of challenges during the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law such as receiving threat and having a hard time convincing people to vote for “YES” which means agreeing for the law’s ratification. The youth also faced challenges during the posting of materials in Cotabato City, Philippines since the City Mayor is not in favor of the Bangsamoro Organic Law which led to various heated situations. Other challenges experienced are related to local traditional politics, different dynamics within the ground, differences of religion, capacity and resources of organization, financial concerns, the misinterpretation and misconception and myths on Bangsamoro Organic Law. It is then concluded that despite the challenges faced by the youth, they maximized their utmost participation and did not give up. Their steadfastness in achieving their goal is what made them tough to counter the waves of challenges.

Abstract

The study is centred on individualism and combating poverty in contemporary Nigeria, using Bayelsa State as a case study. Poverty is widespread and the poor people are the hardest hit of the excruciating effects of the menace. Poverty is a one of the major problems confronting the world and combating it has being a priority of government at all levels. Poverty remains the root cause of many problems in the globe such as wars, conflicts, environmental degradation, prostitution, malnutrition, illiteracy, human trafficking, political violence and different dimensions of crime in our society. This research views poverty firstly as an individual challenge and considers the “self” a major factor in combating it. It is a qualitative study which adopted the expo-facto research design and data were obtained mainly from secondary sources, while relying on the problem solving approach for the analysis of data. Findings in the study reaffirmed the multi-dimensional nature of poverty in line with the existing literature. However, the research proffered a new approach in fighting poverty in Bayelsa State, with an acronym of “ESCAPE” – Poverty, which can be adopted in Nigeria and the world at large. It is recommended in this study that individuals must accept responsibility and prove consistent commitment that is believed to be a better approach in combating poverty in contemporary times.
