Abstract

This study aims to uncover the prevailing motifs in the Meranaw rina-rinaw texts and. Through thematic analysis, this study determines how faithful the rina-rinaw has remained to the prototype, the traditional bayok, or how far it has drifted from the latter. Specifically, this study seeks to identify different motifs dominating the texts. The findings revealed that the rina-rinaw texts employ a rich variety of motifs or recurring themes which are the essential stuff of which songs are made to draw traction and engage the listeners. They enliven the experience or world portrayed in the songs. Most importantly, this study poses a challenge to future researchers to attempt forays into other aspects of the Meranaw culture. This study on the rina-rinaw, as one of the many “undocumented” Meranaw art forms, provides only a foretaste of much more that the unique and rich Meranaw cultural heritage has to offer.

Abstract

Playing video games is a popular leisure activity among adolescents and youths. People's motivations for playing video games, as well as the potential benefits and drawbacks, are an issue of continual debate. Some researchers believed that playing video games negatively impacted academic achievement among students. Consequently, the purpose of this analytical paper is to identify the link between the academic performance of UiTM Pahang Branch, Jengka Campus students and the amount of time they devote to video games. A survey was distributed online in order to collect information regarding the amount of time students spend playing video games and their academic performance. The sample for the study was comprised of 103 students from UiTM Jengka, Pahang, who were chosen at random. This study indicates that there is a statistically significant correlation between the amount of time students spend playing video games and their academic performance at UiTM Jengka, Pahang. The findings reveal that gaming time accounts for 3.72 percent of the total variation in academic achievement, while the remaining 96.28 percent can be attributed to other variables. Moreover, the outcomes show that students who play video games have substantially lower CGPAs compared to students who don't engage in video games. In order to reduce the prevalence of online gaming addiction in the future, this study suggests that awareness campaigns on the adverse consequences of online gaming should be strengthened.

Abstract

The discussion about Indonesian art in this paper is deliberately limited to modern art. It seems appropriate that the name Nusantara is more popular with art in Indonesia which is still in the categories of primitive, classical and traditional art. A little bit about primitive art, which is easy to understand, is that works of art which, in terms of technique, materials and symbolic meaning, are still categorized as simple in nature. Usually primitive art is identified during the prehistoric period and relates to the early period of human culture, but if all artifacts are from the mesolithic or middle rock period or neolithic or new rock. Then, with regard to classical art, it could be said that the rise of this type of art occurred after entering the historical period or when life had settled down and there was already a regulated community through the institutions it created. Judging from the word classic etymologically means it has received a Nobel title. Such a non-lexical meaning is conventional, usually classical art is a work of art that has experienced its peak of beauty. So what can be said is that classical art is also a paradigmatic system of values that is widely adhered to by its supporters, so that works of art are usually always produced in palaces and are constantly celebrated, especially in terms of their perfection.

Abstract

Mangrove restoration is an effort to restore degraded mangrove ecosystems with the aim of increasing environmental sustainability, biodiversity conservation and providing social and economic benefits for the community. This research aims to determine the extent to which mangrove restoration can influence the socio-economic life of the community in Batu Panjang Village, Bengkalis Regency. The research method used is descriptive qualitative by systematically analyzing and processing data based on the results of observations and interviews with farmer groups, village officials and stakeholders in Batu Panjang Village. The results of this research show that restoration activities provide (1) a positive impact on increasing community knowledge and understanding regarding the function and role of mangroves in coastal area conservation efforts, (2) community empowerment has been carried out by forming a farmer group, namely the Jeram Batu Panjang (JBP) group and the STYA group which plays a role from the land clearing stage, to the planting stage, (3) but has not yet provided/shown a significant impact in increasing income which will affect the social and economic conditions of the community in Batu Panjang Village, Rupat District. This is shown by the research results that the income earned by the community from mangrove restoration activities from the land clearing stage to the planting stage is only around IDR 475,000 on average, still far below the Bengkalis Regency Minimum Wage of IDR 3,599,029.72.

Abstract

The restoration program aims to provide assistance to coastal communities in preserving mangrove forests and at the same time provide knowledge to the community about the importance of mangroves and the benefits that can be obtained from mangrove plants, so that mangroves can also help improve the socio-economic development of the community. The data collection techniques used in research are observation, interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique used in this research is descriptive qualitative, used to analyze and systematically process facts obtained from the field assisted by frequency tables. The limit of this research especially analyzed the effects of the socio-economy. The economic impact cannot be separated from activities involving the community starting from clearing land, searching for seeds, nurseries, planting and maintenance. The amount of work done by group members determines the results or income they will obtain. From the results of the data in the field, apart from the social impact that fosters concern for mangrove preservation and mutual cooperation created from togetherness in groups, it can also be seen that the influence of restoration activities on the economy is the involvement of farmer group members, most of whom are involved in seeding and planting. Work is carried out in groups, especially for planting. If you look at the highest income obtained from restoration activities, it is around IDR 401,000 – IDR 500,000 per activity and this is only obtained by 1 person (head of the farmer group), and the majority earn IDR 201,000 – IDR 300,000 (43.47%).

Abstract

Stand-up comedy, a trans-tribal and gender-equality profession among talented Nigerian youths, is posed with different linguistic barriers in communication exchange between tribal performers and their heterogeneous audience and between intertribal performers and homogeneous audiences because of cultural differences. In Southwest Nigeria, the Yoruba call it "Efe" and "Apara;" Southeast, the Igbo, "Njakiri;" the North, Hausa/Fulani, "Yan Kama" and 'Waman Sariki. Earlier studies have focused on its entertainment aspects, disregarding its underlying intercultural values and mono-national speech act. Therefore, this study examines the use of the mono-national speech act of Pidgin-sociolect and Pidgin-idiolect (catchphrases and withering scorn) used by Nigerian stand-up comedians in live performances to address linguistic barriers and foster communication exchange between performers and heterogeneous audiences. This is in a bid to create national unity, promote love and foster mutual intelligibility among the heterogeneous audience. Schechner's Performance Theory was used to interrogate performance. Data from live recordings of purposively selected Nigerian Stand-up comedians: Ayo Makun (AY), Helen Paul, Godwin Komone (Gordons), Ahamefula Igwemba (Klint da Drunk), and Aboki, were used. They underwent a performance analysis.

Abstract

This research paper examines the concept of waiting as depicted in selected Quranic verses and in Marlow's play Dr. Faustus. Both sources explore the theme of waiting, but they present it from different perspectives and with different implications. The Quranic verses emphasize waiting as an act of surrender to divine timing, patience, and faith in Allah's plan. It is seen as a virtue that leads to spiritual growth and rewards in the afterlife. In contrast, Dr. Faustus portrays waiting as driven by human ambition and a desire for power and knowledge. The protagonist's impatience and misuse of power ultimately lead to tragic consequences. The differing portrayals of waiting highlight the contrasting roles of patience, faith, and ambition in the human experience. The paper delves into these differences and explores the broader philosophical and moral implications raised by each perspective. Ultimately, it prompts readers to reflect on how these concepts shape their lives and choices.

Abstract

This research applies Lacanian psychoanalysis to scrutinize the use of improvisation and radical objectivization in Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber. Drawing on Lacan's theory of the "mirror stage," the work argues that Carter's use of these literary techniques disrupts the reader's sense of identity and challenges their preconceived notions of self and other. Through close analysis of key passages from the text, the research demonstrates how Carter's use of these techniques creates a sense of alienation and fragmentation in the reader, as they are forced to confront the unsettling and often disturbing aspects of the stories. The work also explores how Lacan's concept of the "phallus" is invoked in Carter's work, as she challenges traditional gender roles and subverts the dominant male gaze through the use of powerful female protagonists. Further, it maintains that Carter's use of these techniques, offers a powerful critique of patriarchal norms and invites the reader to engage with the complex and often contradictory nature of identity and desire. By disrupting traditional fairy tale tropes and challenging patriarchal norms, Carter invites the reader to engage with the complex and often unsettling nature of identity and desire, and offers a powerful critique of the ways in which these concepts are shaped and constructed by dominant cultural narratives.

Abstract

This paper explores the portrayal of Susan Barton as an unreliable narrator in J.M. Coetzee’s novel, Foe, and its implications on storytelling, authorial authority, and existential themes. Through a comprehensive analysis of Susan’s narrative, the paper delves into the dual interpretations of her (un)reliability and argues that Coetzee intentionally crafts her as an elusive unreliable narrator. Then this article examines the “re-deconstruction” achieved by Coetzee, which challenges traditional storytelling conventions and emphasises the underlying meaning conveyed by a story. It also tries to explore Coetzee’s philosophical contemplations of existence and contends that aligning with Sartre’s existential thinking, Coetzee discusses many concepts around freedom and existence. By incorporating existential reflections, the paper uncovers the consciousness and existence embedded in the narrative.
