The study attempted to explain fundamentals of Systemic Functional Theory as textual analytical instruments. The basis was to demonstrate the applications of Ideational, Interpersonal and Textual Metafunctions as alternative semiotic resources that provide composite meaning potential to the structure of the clause. For illustration, six clauses in the advert of Premium Pension Limited were used as textual elements which the three metafunctions were applied. The study revealed conditionality, sensitizationality, judgmentality as well as integrity as the nuggets of the message. In addition, the ad tends to propound solutions to the financial security of the future of the people. The solution is for the recipients to negotiate and begin savings with Premium Pension Limited whose concern is how to care for the people in their old age. Above all, the study concluded that Halliday’s theory as a very practicable tool of textual analysis for researchers.

This research is conducted to find out: (1) whether or not the use of Noddy cartoon is effective in improving the writing skill of the first year students of SMK Terpadu Mega Rezky Makassar and (2) the attitude of the first year students of SMK Terpadu Mega Rezky Makassar toward the use of Noddy cartoon in improving their writing skill. The research employs quasi-experimental method with two groups namely control and experimental groups. Each group consists of 30 students. The sample is chosen by applying cluster random sampling technique. The writer uses a test of writing and questionnaire in experimental group. The data obtained through the test is analyzed by using inferential statistic through SPSS version 22.0 program. The Likert-scale is used to analyze data of the student’s response to the questionnaire. In conducting the research, the writer applies Noddy cartoon episodes as the medium in improving the students’ writing skill. The result of this research shows that the use of Noddy cartoon is effective in improving the writing skill achievements of the first year students of SMK Terpadu Mega Rezky Makassar. It is indicated by the significant difference between the result of post-test in the experimental and control groups. The mean score of post-test in the experimental group is 76.77, which is higher than the mean score of post-test in the control group which is only 65.97. Furthermore, the data that are collected from the questionnaire show that the students have positive attitude towards the use of Noddy cartoon in learning writing, which is in scale of 83.20 or categorized as positive.

This study aims at describing the phase structure of classroom discourse in SMAN 1 Palopo. The research design employed is a qualitative study. The research location was SMAN 1 Palopo in which the population of the current study was classroom discourse in class X; while the sample were clauses that indicate the phase and interpersonal meaning of the teacher and the students who were selected using the purposive sampling technique. The source of data were the discourses in the biology, Physics and civic education classes. This study uses the theory of systemic functional linguistics to identify the clause phase structure consisting of phases and each sub-phase consists of 5 phases. Phase is used to transfer the science that aims to guide students to understand the material. Sub-phase comprises 33 phases which were divided into 4 static sub-phases and 29 dynamic sub-phases. System dominant mode shows the role of teachers in transferring science or knowledge expect information provided will be accepted by the students.

This research is aimed to find out the solution of the anxiousness phenomenon that always attacks the EFL Learners particularly in Indonesia. In the future, this research is expected as main information for all students and lecturer or teachers of English to decrease the students’ anxiety in performing speaking. In long time ago until now, it becomes a big problem for all beginner students of English. The implementation of this research starting by doing observation to all class in the sixth semester students to find out some good EFL Learners. Researchers then consulting with the lecturer in determining the students to be the subject of this research. After finding the subject, interview session will be conducted to find out several information about their anxiousness. The data will be collected until limit of saturation. The last step of this research is doing analysis of the data were taken from observation and interview. The researchers will apply data reduction for the first step, the second is data display and the last will be drawing conclusion and verification of the data. The conclusion that being made will be verify by triangulation to get the validity of the result of this research.

The objective of this research was to find out whether or not the implementation of Think Talk Write (TTW) strategy improves students’ writing ability. The researcher applied quasi-experimental method. The population of this research is the second semester students of English Language Education. There were two classes and it consists of 60 students. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique and divided the class into two groups, one group as experimental group and another as control group. Therefore, each group consisted of 30 students. Based on the students’ result obtained and stated in findings, the researcher used t-test in inferential statistic through SPSS to test the hypothesis. It showed that the probability value is lower than alpha (α) (0.000 < 0.05). It means that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of Think Talk Write (TTW) strategy improves students’ writing achievement.

The research aimed at finding out whether or not using of authentic materials through communicative approach improves the vocabulary of the students. This applied a pre-experimental method. The population of the research was the second grades students of a state high school comprising four classes and one of which chosen as the sample by using purposive sampling. The sample consisted of thirty two. The data were collected by using vocabulary test that consisted 20 items. The proce4 of collecting data was presented in chronological order as pre-test given before treatment and then post-test was giving after treatment as students’ achievement. The data analysis showed that there was significant difference of the students’ vocabulary achievement after giving treatment by using authentic materials through communicative approach. It was proved by the mean score of pre-test was 5.97 and the mean of post-test was 7.82. The data was analyzed by using t-test was higher than t-table value. The value of t-test was 9, while t-table value was 1.695 at the 0.05 level significance. Based on the result above, the writer concludes that the use of authentic material through communicative approach improves the students’ vocabulary mastery.

The learning should be supported by an interesting strategy to make students enjoyable and interested in learning, as well as in learning English Vocabulary. The aim of this research is to investigate and describe the students’ perceptions on the use of vocabulary self-collection strategy in Learning English vocabulary. This study was a descriptive model consisting of 37 subject-students. The data were collected with a questionnaire, it was rating scale which distributed after 8 meetings of treatments, and it covered 15 positive and closed statements about the use of vocabulary self-collection strategy in learning vocabulary classroom. The questionnaire was analyzed based on the percentage of each answer. To calculate questionnaire data into percentage, the researcher used the formula where the number of frequency is multiplied to 100% then divided to the number of the total respondents. The result of the students’ perceptions indicated that vocabulary self-collection strategy is interesting strategy used in learning vocabulary classroom. The highest rank of the mean score is 56.6% of agree students, 35.5% of strongly agree students, 6.7% of undecided students, 0.7% of disagree students, and 0.2% of strongly disagree to the statements on the questionnaire.

This study is intended to find the correlation between students L2 motivation and their EFL proficiency. The Instruments used in this current study involved questionnaire and test. The questionnaire is used to measure the students’ motivation and the test was used to reveal student’s EFL proficiency score. The current study involves 195 college students from four universities in Malang. The result of analysis shows that there is a significant correlation between L2 motivation and the students’ EFL proficiency. It is proved by the test of hypothesis in which P Value (0.002) is lower than Alfa (α = 0.01). The result implies the increase in students’ motivation can be a prediction of the increase of students’ EFL proficiency. The students who are strongly motivated in learning English are most probably achieve better in their EFL proficiency.
