Abstract

The effect of machine translation (MT) on high school students’ acquisition of the English language is investigated in this study. Data were collected using a mix of open-ended questions and questionnaires to investigate the ways in which MT affects speaking, writing, reading comprehension, and vocabulary development. According to the findings, 32% of students often use MT programs like Google Translate to help them in writing, reading, vocabulary, and assignments. It has been discovered that MT improves vocabulary acquisition, especially in academic settings, and facilitates students' comprehension of difficult language. However, 46.7% of students claimed that MT enhanced their reading comprehension, whereas 16.7% experienced translation mistakes, especially with common phrases and difficult language, raising questions about its accuracy. 41.9% students used MT for word choice and sentence construction in writing, while its impact on speaking was less pronounced (45.2%). These results are consistent with Technology Acceptance Model and Cognitive Learning Theory, indicating that although MT as useful tool for language learning, it should be used in compare with other tools to cover its disadvantages. Everything being considered, MT is a useful tool for enhancing vocabulary and understanding; but it cannot take the place of active speaking practice.

Abstract

This article examines the main adolescent character in Veronica Roth's novel Divergent using a sociological perspective of literature, particularly Pierre Bourdieu's theory of field, habitus, and capital. This study aims to analyze how the social struggle of the main adolescent character, Beatrice Prior (Tris), is depicted through her transition from the Abnegation faction to Dauntless and how cultural, social, and symbolic capital play a role in this process of social recognition. The method used is a qualitative-descriptive analysis by examining the narrative, dialogue, and important events in the novel. The results of the analysis show that Tris's struggle in the social field of Dauntless is a process of accumulating cultural and symbolic capital that allows her to gain legitimacy as a member of the group. In addition, the character of Tris also represents the psychosocial condition of adolescents who are searching for self-identity, where life choices are perceived as existential issues of "life and death". Thus, the novel Divergent not only depicts a dystopian conflict, but also reflects Veronica Roth's views on the experiences and social pressures experienced by teenagers in modern society.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of Black women through the perspective of intersectional feminism in The Six Triple Eight (2024). Although recent studies have explored women's representation and racial discrimination in historical films, limited attention has been given to how race and gender simultaneously shape Black women's experiences within military institutions. Addressing this gap, the study applies Kimberlé Crenshaw's theory of intersectionality to analyze the interaction between racism and sexism as represented in the film. A qualitative descriptive method was employed using film analysis. The primary data consisted of dialogues, character interactions, cinematic scenes, and visual representations extracted from the film, while secondary data were collected from books, journal articles, and previous studies related to intersectionality, Black feminism, and film studies. Data were collected through repeated observation, documentation, note-taking, thematic coding, and source triangulation to ensure the credibility of the findings. The analysis reveals that Black women experience multiple forms of institutional discrimination manifested through racial segregation, gender stereotyping, unequal treatment, institutional neglect, and the delegitimization of leadership. Despite these structural barriers, the members of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion demonstrate resilience through collective solidarity, professional excellence, strategic leadership, and disciplined resistance. The novelty of this study lies in applying intersectionality to a contemporary historical film that has received limited scholarly attention, demonstrating that Black women's experiences are shaped by intersecting systems of power rather than by race or gender independently. The findings contribute to feminist literary criticism and film studies by extending the application of intersectionality to military cinema and provide practical insights into the importance of inclusive historical representation in contemporary media.

Abstract

Word formation in product titles within Indonesian e-commerce platforms has developed rapidly, frequently departing from conventional grammatical structure. This study examines the word-formation processes present in smartphone and accessory product titles on Shopee Indonesia. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, 92 lexical items extracted from product titles were analyzed and classified according to Bauer (1983) structural framework of word formation, supplemented by Yule (2010) descriptive categories. The results show that derivation was the most frequent process (32.61%), followed by initialism/acronym (28.26%) and compounding (26.09%), while coinage occurred least frequently (1.09%). These findings indicate that product titles on Shopee exhibit a high degree of morphological density and grammatical compression, combining multiple word-formation processes within a single title string. This study contributes a structural account of how lexical items in e-commerce product titles are formed, providing a basis for further research into the communicative and commercial functions of these forms.

Abstract

The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education offers efficient writing support but poses a critical risk of learner dependency, which can decease critical thinking and academic integrity. This study aims to investigate the learning strategies employed by Indonesian EFL postgraduate students to plan, monitor, and evaluate their engagement with AI chatbots during academic writing. Employing a qualitative multiple-case study design, data were collected from eight postgraduate students through semi-structured interviews and stimulated recall sessions based on their authentic AI conversation logs. The findings reveal that the students rigorously applied Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) strategies across three interaction phases to safeguard their intellectual independence. During the Planning phase, learners consciously limited the AI's role to preparatory tasks and brainstorming, strictly preventing the machine from generating full drafts. In the Monitoring phase, participants actively filtered and synthesized the generated content, frequently positioning the chatbot as a mock examiner to rigorously test their academic arguments. Furthermore, within the evaluation phase, the students executed multi-layered evaluations by manually verifying AI-generated citations against reputable academic databases to mitigate hallucinations, followed by consultations with human experts’ validation. Ultimately, the study concludes that strong metacognitive regulation effectively prevents cognitive laziness, ensuring that AI serves strictly as an adaptive linguistic model rather than a replacement for human intellect.
