This journal publishes articles on community service and empowerment results that are problem-solving, comprehensive, meaningful, and sustainable, with clear goals. Various community service and empowerment activities must have novelty (have innovation and creativity), so that they do not just replicate the same activities in different places, have measurable results and impacts on society, and support the achievement of the goals set forth in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDGs are a global action plan agreed by world leaders, to end poverty, reduce inequality and protect the environment. The SDGs contain 17 Goals and 169 Targets, so that each article must be linked to these goals and targets (as stated in the contribution statement).

Abstract

Probolinggo Regency has a low literacy rate (78.09%) which is below the average of the East Java Province (88.34%). This data is supported by the recapitulation results of the Directorate of Literacy and Equality Education in 2014 which states that the illiteracy rate in Probolinggo Regency is 64.163 people. Meanwhile, this regency is considered having a high potential in the field of fisheries through catfish farming, located in Sumberasih District. This article discusses the results of the dissemination of illiteracy eradication using instructional book of catfish cultivation. The empowerment method implemented was Empowerment and Development. The instruments used were interview, observation, document, questionnaire, and test. On trial phase, a mentoring was done to the learning community that was called WB. Prior to the mentoring session, pretest was implemented then posttest afterwards which were all done to the WB. Results show that there was an improvement on class average grade, previously it was 58,5 subsequently after the use of illiteracy eradication book, the average grade has improved to 79. The responses gathered from the WB towards the instructional book were very positive. Thus, instructional book of catfish cultivation can be used as a textbook in illiteracy tutorial in minapolitan area.

Abstract

Muhammadiyah Junior High School 02 of Batu city has implemented the Strengthening of Character Education (SBE) through community service program in 2017. It is analyzed that the proram has obstacles in its implementation of classroom-based (SBE), it is proved by the inability of teachers to integrate character values into subjects to match the curriculum content. Thus, it is projected that to improve classroom-based SBE can be done by integrating literacy activities. The classroom-based SBE approach can be implemented through developing instructional method, classroom management, and integrating literacy activities into lesson plan of 2013 Curriculum. This community service program aims to improve SBE through literacy movement at MJHS 02 of Batu City. The method implemented was participation-based method through training and mentoring of SBE, also mentoring to plan and practice the SBE implementation through literacy movement. This program involves school teachers and principle of SMP Muhammadiyah 02 Batu, as many of 16 personnel. Data collection was gathered through observation and document which then analyzed descriptively. Results show that there is an improvement on teachers’ competence in developing lesson plan using classroom-based SBE concept through literacy movement, and an improvement also shown on teachers’ skill in implementing class instruction which is based on 2013 Curriculum that applies SBE through literacy movement. This improvement simultaneously contributes to students’ achievement expected in the 2013 Curriculum, namely character improvement.

Abstract

Telang flower, scientifically named Clitoria ternatea, is a wild plant that is commonly found in home yards and is usually treated as decorative flowers. This plant is a group of legumes. Its bright blue colour adds the beauty and bloom of the home yard. In addition to its attractiveness, telang flower has many benefits, they are for eye treatment, anti-depressant, heart health care, also circulation of lipoproteins in the body. Another, telang flower is also used as food or cake colouring. Therefore, it is important to educate public society about the use of telang flower as natural dyes in making cendol starch. The objective of this community service program is to improve public society’s knowledge on the use of telang flower as natural dyes in making cendol starch for society in Datengan Village Grogol District Kediri Regency. The program had been implemented on July 20 to August 30, 2019, located in Datengan Village Grogol District Kediri Regency. Results show that the partner community were very enthusiastic on the use of natural dyes from telang flower in making cendol starch. Based on the questionnaire distributed to the partner community, it reveals that there was a significant improvement on the partner community’s knowledge which reached 90% on the use of natural dyes in making cendol starch.

Abstract

A proper handwashing practice in Indonesia is around 49, 8%. A report from Basic Health Research 2018 recorded that Indonesians did not practice proper handwashing. This article aims to determine level of knowledge, number, and type of bacteria on hands. This community service program was conducted to 20 participants of the Regional Office of ‘Aisyiyah Malang through handwashing promotion using cleaners (such as soap, wet tissue, and hand sanitizer) to be applied to media called Nutrients Agar Plate (NAP). Then, the participants were to do gram staining to count number, type, and morphology of bacteria. The method implemented was desciptive data analysis. Finding shows that in the aspect of knowledge level, 75% of the participants were able to answer all questions correctly after the handwashing promotion program. On the count, there were 154 colonies of bacteria growing on unwashed fingers; 8 colonies on the fingers using hand sanitizer; 36 colonies on the fingers washed with soap, and 29 colonies with wet tissue. Handwashing habits provides knowledge to individuals of healthy living behaviour to prevent bacterial growth. It is concluded that hands washed with soap and running water, hand sanitizer, and wet tissue can actually reduce number of bacterial colonies as they contain bactericidal or bacteriostatic chemicals. Types of bacteria from coccus and Gram-positive rods are Staphylococcus, Streptococcus or Corynebacterium.

Abstract

The problem faced by IbM partner, Traditional Farmers Group located in the Village Sumbersari Poncokusumo Malang, is the the slow increase in weight gain per unit time of Brahman Cattle. To get ready to sell a decent weight of at least 500 kg, according to the Department of Agriculture, requires a maximum period of 6 months; however, the reality of Traditional Farmers Group located in the Village Sumbersari takes more than 12 months and some even 24 months. This is because the feed given to the Brahman cattle do not have good quality because it uses fresh straw. This IbM's goal is to provide a solution for farmers who face the problem of animal feed. The program was conducted in the Village Sumbersari Poncokusumo Malang East Java Province during May to October 2010 (6 months) involving 2 groups of partners and 20 traditional Brahman cattle breeders. The activities carried out consist of production training, animal feed production, and review of production results. The IbM activities that have been achieved are training, production practices, and action studies on 7 types of making preserved cattle feed from straw. Based on the results of the activity, it can be concluded that IbM partner breeders have improved knowledge, production skills, and action reviews in utilizing straw products as cattle feed.

Abstract

Ecotourism is a form of tourism that is closely linked to the principle of conservation. Thus, ecotourism is right and beneficial in maintaining the integrity and authenticity of ecosystems in natural areas, particularly turtle conservation areas. Ecotourism is synergized to turtle conservation as it has such features: (1) Conservation, the use of biodiversity does not damage the natural source, also it does not cause negative impact whereas it is very environmentally friendly, (2) Education, by improving community’s awareness and changing their behavior about the need for conservation of living natural resources and their conservation, (3) Economy, ecotourism provides economic benefits and spur regional development; and (4) Active role of community, this is done by building partnership with local communities for the development of ecotourism. Based on the issues, “IbW Conservation and Ecotourism Ngadirojo  District Pacitan Region” was done by (1) Making a model of tourism activities that is environmentally, ecologically, socially, and economically beneficial to local communities and to the sustainability of natural resources, (2) Assessing the object of tourist attraction in flora and fauna conservation areas, in this case sea turtles and their ecosystems, so that can synergize with ecotourism activities, and (3) Making a model of local community-based tourist institution. The method implemented to achieve the objectives was “Community Empowerment through Ecotourism” which is described as follow: (1) Land Conservation, value and travel product, (2) Creation of an ecotourism atmosphere that all people who live in the area will gain the benefit, (3) The development of tourism activities that carry the excellence of the physical, economic, socio-cultural aspects of the local, (4) The solid image of ecotourism activities in the region that is supported by the readiness of all stakeholders, and (5) Integration of turtle theme conservation and ecotourism area with other supporting tourism products in the Regency. Pacitan Construction of facilities that have been carried out are: (1) developing the forest of eternity, (2) ecological restoration of coastal forests, (3) making sea water wells for turtle ponds, (4) nursery of coastal forest vegetation, (5) construction of marine biota ponds and sanitation facilities, (6) construction of shelters and gazebos, (7) construction of parking lot, and (8) widening of the ecotourism ring road. The next stage plans are: (1) ecotourism community empowerment, (2) strengthening the ecotourism area, and (3) revitalization of marine biota ponds.

Abstract

SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Malang is high school that receives many students with special needs. There are around 30 students with speacial needs distributed in several classes out of a total of 224 students. In this regard, the problem to reveal is about the instruction to write poetry in normal students and students with special needs. The objectives of this community service program are (1) to improve the importance of poetry writing instruction at school for soft character building; (2) to improve teachers’ understanding of individual learning on poetry; (3) to improve students’ ability to write poetry by expanding their horizon through pictures. The method implemented in this program were: (1) training poetry writing using cultural study approach through video; (2) training on poetry writing, and (3) mentoring. All these methods are integral part of the PPMI program. The outcomes of this program are: (1) community service team: a. Video about Malang and journal article 2. School Partner: lesson plan using socio cultural approach b. Poem written by students. The results of this program show that the poems written by students show love for Malang. In addition, the poems written individually and video displaying pictures of Malang from the royal era until now have added students’ insight.
