Abstract

This research focuses on developing visual identity through a mascot as an effective strategy to support the branding of international events. The study centers around the design of SWEN, the mascot for the Brawijaya International Design Exhibition (BIDEA) at Malang Creative Center (MCC), which represents the values of innovation, creativity, and cross-cultural collaboration between Indonesia and Japan. The development of this mascot applies the Manga Matrix theory framework by Hiroyoshi Tsukamoto, integrating character design elements such as Form Matrix, Costume Matrix, and Personality Matrix. Additionally, a design thinking approach was used to ensure the design centered on user needs through the stages of empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. The first stage, empathize, involved interviews with manga artists and character designers to explore the cultural values to be depicted. The second stage, define, focused on clearly articulating the problem based on the insights gathered. The third stage, ideate, generated initial ideas and design concepts. In the fourth stage, a visual prototype of the mascot was developed for implementation in the exhibition. The fifth stage, test, involved conducting a questionnaire survey among exhibition visitors, designers, and manga enthusiasts to gather feedback. During the three-day BIDEA exhibition at MCC, the study engaged participants through a Likert scale 4-based questionnaire to evaluate the mascot's success. The analysis revealed that over 80% of respondents agreed that the SWEN mascot effectively became a relevant and functional visual identity for the international exhibition. The results of the design were applied in both offline and online media during the Indonesia-Japan international event. The study concludes that combining the Manga Matrix theory and the design thinking approach produced a mascot design that is not only visually appealing but also carries strong representational values. This study contributes to the development of character design for international event branding and reinforces the role of mascots as a tool for cross-cultural communication.

Abstract

Gama Jaya Motor is a car repair and maintenance workshop located in Surabaya. As a business entity, Gama Jaya Motor needs to manage its property to support its operations, one of which is building maintenance. In a workshop business, the customer waiting room is one of the most important aspects of property management, as it is directly used by customers. The interior of the customer waiting room should be designed to be attractive and aesthetically pleasing while maintaining customer comfort. This can be achieved by implementing an interior design concept based on smart living. This concept integrates various smart devices based on the Internet of Things (IoT) into the interior or building design, not only to enhance customer comfort but also to improve the operational efficiency of the workshop. This study employs a design-based case study method. The design process is carried out through field observations, interviews, and an analysis of spatial and technological requirements that can be integrated. The smart devices applied in the design include automatic lighting systems, CCTV, smart switches, smart sockets, and IoT-based temperature control systems. In addition to enhancing customer comfort, the implementation of the smart living concept is also expected to improve energy efficiency and the security of the workshop environment.

Abstract

In the current era, the fashion industry is very developed, high market demand has resulted in mass production of clothing. To prevent the occurrence of fast fashion, world fashion players have now implemented a sustainability system which is done by producing clothes from fabrics made from natural fabric, minimal patterns, and using natural textile dyes. In Indonesia, people now know more about sustainable fashion, one of which is the application of natural textile dyes to fashion products. With abundant natural resources, especially plant species, it can be utilized and has the potential to be developed. One of them is cocoa, cocoa plantations in Indonesia are very developed, especially in Jembrana Regency, Bali, which is the largest cocoa producer in Bali. Cocoa shells are waste that has not been utilized much, in this paper we will present a new innovation in the form of textile dyes from cocoa shell waste, which is expected to help reduce chemical dye pollution in the environment and develop local regional potential in terms of the welfare of local farmers.

Abstract

Detecting Colors in Lampung's Sebagi Fabric and Converting them to Color Codes. The methodology employed in this study is qualitative ethnography, with data collection conducted through direct field surveys and color detection using the SCI D65 10° Colorimeter. The colorimeter detects the surface colors of Sebagi fabric, converting them into Lab values, which are then translated into RGB, CMYK, and HEX color codes through the Nixsensor application. The primary findings indicate that three Sebagi fabrics were successfully identified and assigned color codes, providing a valuable reference for textile, product, and graphic designers, as well as researchers. The study concludes that using a colorimeter yields accurate results for fabric color detection after conversion. The color data collected from Sebagi fabric at the Lampung Museum in 2022 can serve as a valuable reference for documentation and culturally based design development in the digital and manufacturing era.

Abstract

"Put On" is the name of both a character and the title of a comic that was once popular in Indonesia. Put On was published around 1931 by Kho Wan Gie in the newspaper. The Put On comic showcases many aspects of the Chinese-Indonesian (Peranakan) culture residing in Jakarta. The Chinese--Indonesian cultures depicted in the comic includes language, daily habits, family structure, and the food consumed. In the Put On comic, the character Put On is shown to be mischievous, naive, and childish despite being portrayed as a large middle-aged man. This research was conducted using qualitative methods in the form of multimodal analysis and narrative inquiry. The observation through multimodal analysis was done to see the graphic narrative elements in the comic, while narrative inquiry was carried out to elaborate on the experience of reading Put On. The aspects observed in the reading experience included character design (drawing style, physical appearance, and clothing style), language (body language and speech), and visualization of social situations. The results of the study reveal that while the design and traits of Put On as the main character do not clearly exhibit a Chinese-Indonesian identity, it is the interaction with other characters who use distinctive language and the social environment they inhabit that makes the Put On comic able to represent Chinese-Indonesian culture.
