Abstract

This research aims to analyze in depth the use of diction error, subject and predicate, and the cause of the error on students of English Education in State University of Jakarta. The research is a qualitative study using descriptive methods. The Instrument of this research is 50 students of third semester essay at the end of the task of writing an academic course of the academic year 2012/2013. The results of this research showed the majority of student errors occurred in the category of diction. Diction ranks first in the percentage of error as much as 63%, followed by subject and verb agreement 37%, and the cause of the error is due to the influence of the first language, translation, and carelessness

Abstract

This  research is aimed  to developing instructional English materials for the students of the seventh grade especially in basic competencies 3.5, 4.5, 3.6, and 4.6 at  MTs  Madani  Pao-pao  based  on  2013  curriculum  supported  by  using  inquiry  learning  model  and  using  the concept of HOTS in indicators achieved. The research design used in this study was Research and Development (R&D).  The   development   model   used   was   ADDIE   model. It consists of need analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The  procedures  included  analyzing  materials   needed   by spreading  questionnaire  to  the  students  and  analyzing  the  basic   competencies used, designing a  blueprint  of  materials and the instructional materials, and validating the material by the expert. There were 146 students as the respondents of 26 questionnaire questions. The instruments used in this research were the documents, questionnaire, and validation checklist. In this research, the expert was involved in order to validate the product. There were three systematic  aspects  that  they  validated  of  the product:  Materials  Systematic  Organization,  Systematic  English   Teaching  and  Systematic  Content  of  English.  Therefore,  the  result  indicated  that  based on experts judgment as well as  product  development  result,  the  developed basic competency  3.5  &  4.5  and  basic  competency  3.6  &  4.6  were applicable to be taught at the seventh grade students  of  Junior  High  School as topic in English for them.

Abstract

This study is a development research aiming to develop a prototype of writing for academic purposes instructional block using IDOL model for the fifth semester students of English Education Department at UIN  Alauddin  Makassar. IDOL    (Input,    Development,    Output,    Language    Acquisition)    model    was implemented as material development model. The study involved 101 respondents i.e. 87 students, 10 graduates, and 4 lecturers from English Education Department at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The research instruments employed were need analysis questionnaire and interview guidelines for students, graduates, and lecturers. While the quantitative data were analyzed using frequency analysis, the qualitative data were analyzed using data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The study results revealed the students’ subjective and objective needs in the material of  writing  for  academic  purposes  which  subsequently  became  the  basis  of  the writing for the syllabus design. Ultimately, a unit of prototype demonstrating the development of instructional block development using IDOL model was developed as an output of this study. This research can be a helpful guideline in developing a teaching material by using IDOL model, and the designed syllabus can be used in teaching writing for academic purposes since the syllabus had been sequenced and graded carefully by considering students’ needs and lecturer’s suggestions.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the meaning of enthusiasm, to observe the responses of enthusiastic students to the speaking activities in the speaking class, and to investigate the factors influencing students’ enthusiasm in speaking class. This research belongs to qualitative and it is placed within the phenomenology approach as the collection of information was qualifiedly by examining the phenomena of the factors influencing students’ enthusiasm in speaking class at the 5th semester students of English Education Department at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The data were analyzed and interpreted by using “coding technique” which covered three types: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The findings showed that Enthusiasm has several meanings such as; feeling or emotion, excitement, eagerness and achieving. Enthusiasm has several functions like; energy enhancer, goal maintainer, curiosity gripper, interest presenter, fire igniters, fear reducer, worry dissolver, and apathy eliminator. There are eight characteristics of enthusiastic students, they are; happiness, curiosity, satisfaction, endurance in speaking, courage, intolerance, agreement, and assistance. The factors influencing students’ enthusiasm in speaking class are; the instructional materials used by the lecturers or teachers, the lecturer/teacher competence and performance, the students’ attitude during the speaking activities, and the classroom environment.

Abstract

The researcher aims to find out the effectiveness using Treasure Hunt Game toward students’ vocabulary mastery with the research objectives: to find out the use of Treasure Hunt Gametowardthe first grade students’ vocabulary mastery at Islamic Senior High School of Muhammadiyah Palampang. This research was conducted at the class X MIA 1 and X MIA 2. The sample of this research was 50 students from 280 populations. The controled class was took from class X MIA 1, while the experimental class was from X MIA 2. The number of the sample in each class was 25 students.Quasi experimental design was applied in this research with two group pre-test and post-test design. The instrument used to collect data was vocabulary test.Research findings showed that the experimental class got score on pre-test with the mean score 44,2. After giving treatment the students got change, they got score with the mean score 59,9. The result of the data analysis indicated that there was a change of the students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught using Treasure Hunt Game. It was proved by the result of the statistical analysis of the level significance P = 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) = 48 indicated that the t-test values of the students’ vocabulary mastery (2,53) was higher than the t-table (2,01). Based on the result of analysis, the researcher concludes that using Treasure Hunt Game was effective toward the students’ vocabulary mastery at the first grade students of Islamic Senior High School of Muhammadiyah Palampang, because Treasure Hunt Game give a lot of fun, the students enjoy the learning without any preasure. Than, Treasure Hunt Game stimulates students engagement in learning process. If students enjoy the learning process, they were enthusiastic enough to involve and compete each other in learning process.Keywords: Treasure Hunt Game, Vocabulary mastery, First Grade Students

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the influence of Outdoor Learning activities on the second year students’ reading comprehension especially in descriptive text. The study was quasi Experimental Design using “Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The study involved 40 students, second year students of English education department at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The independent variable of this research was Outdoor Learning Strategy and the dependent variable was students’ reading comprehension especially in descriptive text. In this research used instruments those were tests and questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistic (frequency, mean score, and standard deviation) and inferential statistic (independent sample t-test). The research discovers that the reading comprehension of the second year students of English Education Department UIN Alauddin Makassar was not improved by using Outdoor Learning Activities. The result of the t-test also shown that the use of Outdoor Learning Activities in teaching reading especially in descriptive text was not effective in improving the students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text because the t-test, -0.39, was lower than t-table, 2.024 (-0.39 2.024).

Abstract

This research aimed at giving a promising sight of students about using verb technique in improving students’ ability in FEG. The research design was quasi experimental with non-equivalent design. It was conducted at the fourth semester of English Education Department at UIN Alauddin Makassar The researcher chose 15 students as experimental class in PBI 1-2 and 15 students as controlled class in PBI 3-4. In the pre-test, the lowest score was only 350, which only had 11 correct answers. After the treatment, examining the use of verb technique, the score of experimental class increased significantly. It proved that the gap of the students’ score of the experimental class between the Pre-test and Post-test was 109. The data illustrated that the treatments gave slightly increasing score in  experimental class. Moreover, test of significant testing showed that the value of the t-test was higher than t-table. Therefore, using verb technique is effective in improving PBI students’ ability in FEG class. Based on the fourth chapter, findings and conclusions, it was noted that the technique applied in this research was conceitedly proposed. The students who want to learn structure most used in TOEFL section 2 at the third semester in FEG class was suggested to apply this technique for a better score and know the structure of a long sentence, especially in section 2 which had an important role in scoring the total score of TOEFL. Using verb technique is expected to be broaden. It was the trick which was needed in section 2.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out whether or not video blog can improve the speaking ability of the students of English Education Department of FTK UINAM in academic year 2017/2018.  The researcher applied pre-experimental method, with one group pretest and posttest design which employed speaking test to find out the students’ speaking performance in terms of accuracy. The sample consisted of 20 students used purposive sampling technique taken from the population of the second semester students of Sulawesi Flight. The result of the data analysis indicated that there was significant difference of students’ speaking performance before and after being trained through video blog. It is proved by result of statistical analysis of the level significance 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) =  N-1 = 20-1 = 19 which indicated that t-test value of final score I speaking ability (13.309) was greater than t-table (2.093). Therefore, video blog can improve speaking performance of the students.

Abstract

This research  aims at finding out the effectiveness of using short storyin improving students’ verbal vocabulary mastery. The subject of the research was the second grade students of SMAN 2 Bulukumba. In collecting the data, this research used pre-test and post-test. The type of this research was quantitative with quasi-experimental design. It was applied with two group’s pre-test and post-test design. The population of this study is 215 students from the second grade students of SMAN 2 Bulukumba. This study is quantitative research with quasi experimental design by using 27 students in control class and 30 students in experimental class. This is proved by figure of means group, the standard deviation and value of t-test  which revealed that the mean score of experimental group is higher than the mean score of control group. The result in t-test of experimental class is higher than  t-table. It  showed that t-table 1, 25>t-table at significance level 2,0 and 12,89> 2.045 t-table at 0,05 (98%). It means that using short story  was more effective in improving  students’ verbal vocabulary mastery at the second grade students of SMAN 2 Bulukumba.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine relation between reading attitudes and academic reading achievement. This study was conducted by using quantitative method with correlational design. Thirty students of the Fifth semester of English Education Department at Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar were chosen randomly as the sample of this research. The data was gathered used a questionnaire to collect information related to the students’ reading attitudes. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) especially reading section was also used to obtain information regarding students’ academic reading achievement. To verify the hypothesis, the data was analyzed by using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation. The findings indicated that there was no relationship between reading attitudes and academic reading achievement. Students’ attitudes toward reading were positive and students’ academic reading achievement were still low, they were dominant in literal level. Nevertheless, the information related to students’ preference in some aspects of reading attitudes and their academic reading achievement may help the teacher to create a better reading teaching process in the future.
