Abstract

Breakfast is an activity of eating and drinking starting from waking up in the morning and fulfilling 15-30% of daily nutritional needs. Breakfast could increase the concentration of learning and it believed could improves children's learning achievement. Delaying breakfast could increase the risk of anemia in children. People in coastal and non-coastal areas have different food supplies according to the environment and natural products that exist and it might make the difference of provision of the breakfast because it was related to the provision of the food. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of breakfast habits on anemia status and learning achievement of elementary school students at coastal and non-coastal area. This study used cross sectional research design and the population of this study were all elementary school students at Kupang city. The determination of this research samples used Slovin formula with a sample size of 100 respondents. And for the statistical tests used analysis of Simple Loistic Regression Test and Whitney Mann test. The statistical test results showed that there was an influence between breakfast habits frequency (p = 0,000), energy contribution (p = 0,000) and protein (p = 0,020) on anemia status. Therefore research findings was shown an influence between the contribution of energy (p = 0.032) and protein (p = 0.004), learning achievement (p = 0.409) on student’s learning achievement. Otherwise, there was no influence between anemia status and learning achievement (p = 0.520). The results of the Mann Whitney test showed that there was no difference between breakfast habits, anemia status and learning achievement in coastal and non-coastal areas.

Abstract

Food is a source of nutrition for humans and is also a source of food for microorganisms. The growth of microorganisms in foodstuffs can cause unwanted physical or chemical changes causing food to be bad for consumption. Therefore to maintain the quality, the food must be given of preservatives. However, people may misuse the preservatives leading to the low safety of food that threatens health. Natural preservatives of plants is more advisable to minimize the risk. The aim of this research was to see the effect of galangal extract (Alpinia galanga) using 60% ethyl acetate solvent in inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria through diffusion disk method. The measured parameter was the inhibition zone formed around the disc paper with a 24-hour incubation period. This research was an experimental study by making galangal extract in certain concentrations. Based on the measurements, the average inhibitory zone diameter at three repetitions with 24 hours observation showed that the galangal extract in several concentrations effectively inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria. The result showed that the higher the concentration of the extract the larger the mean drag zone formed around the disk paper. The most effective concentration was 20 ml concentration with 25,6 mm inhibition (0.000 (P <0,05), F = 89,592).

Abstract

The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is still high in Indonesia, and the Province of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT Province) is one of the contributors to the high IMR, the highest in Sumba Timur Districts. Neonatal death can occur due to risk factors in the mother and also the child. The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors that influence neonatal mortality, so that the control model can be developed. The study used a case-control design, with the population being all newborns who were delivered at and recorded in care hospitals and health centers located in Sumba Timur Districts in 2016. Case samples were 116 cases of neonatal mortality, and controls were 232 neonatal lives who is the closest neighbour to a case with equitable socio-economic status. Data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. Further research was conducted on 166 mothers with conditions during pregnancy and childbirth optimal health and children born also without risk factors. The most dominant risk factors affecting neonatal deaths in Sumba Timur districts are asphyxia in infants, complications of pregnancy/childbirth, maternal anemia, prematurity and LBW. From the compatibility test of the logistic regression model partially, the probability of p1 = 0.03 p0 is obtained. That is, if asphyxia in infants, complications of pregnancy, maternal anemia, prematurity and low birth weight can be overcome, then the risk of neonatal death is only 0.03 or 3%. The results of follow-up studies of 166 birth mothers in 2018 who at the time of pregnancy and childbirth without risk factors (without complications of pregnancy/childbirth, there is no anemia in the mother, without asphyxia cases in infants, not premature and not LBW), it turns out neonatal mortality is only 1 case (0.6%). This result is the basis for determining the model of control and prevention of risk factors for neonatal death, namely optimizing maternal health during pregnancy and during childbirth. Among other things by checking the pregnancy, good nutritional status, handling complications of pregnancy and childbirth optimally, and giving birth to workers and adequate health facilities.

Abstract

Street Food provides an important contribution to the fulfillment of children's energy while in school, but street food is very risky for biological, physical, and chemical contamination. These problems caused by several factors, namely the knowledge, attitudes, and actions of the makers, sellers, and buyers, about the importance of food security. Therefore, one of the efforts made by the government to overcome food insecurity is by educating five keys of food safety measures for the school community, students, and vendors of Pupils street food. This study is descriptive research that aims to know the knowledge and attitudes of the pupils in choosing food and vendors in processing street food at SD Inpres Bertingkat Kelapa Lima II Kota Kupang dealing with the five food security keys. The samples in this study were 52 students and 4 food vendors. The results showed that the knowledge of 52 student respondents, specifically 35 (67.3%) students had good knowledge, 14 (26.9%) students had sufficient knowledge, and 3 (5.8%) students had less knowledge. The attitude of 52 Respondents were categorized as Positive (100%). The respondent's actions based on triangulation revealed that the most of respondents still had actions that were not in accordance with the 5 keys food safety measures in the Selection of Snacks for Students.

Abstract

Good reproductive health will improve reproductive health and prevent reproductive health problems. The Indonesian Family Planning Association survey and On Track Media Indonesia (OTMI) found that around 29% to 31% of adolescents in East Nusa Tenggara had premarital sex. The impact of poor reproductive health behavior is unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection. This is a quantitative descriptive study that aimed to describe reproductive health behavior in high school students in Kupang City. The population in this study were high school students from grade XI and XII (6863 students) and a sample of 378 students taken by proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The results showed a description of Genital Personal Hygiene behavior in high school students in Kupang City as good is 249 students (66%), while less is 129 students (34%). The pre-marital sexual behavior of high school students in Kupang City was at a risk is 85 students (29%) and 293 students (71%) were not at risk. The behavior of watching porn videos for high school students in Kupang City is 217 students (57.4%) have watched and 161 students (42.6%) have not watched porn videos/movies. Behavior discussing reproductive health among high school students in Kupang City is 216 students (57%) discussing reproductive health and 162 students (43%) do not discuss reproductive health. The Schools can give information about reproductive health to students by optimizing the program of Information and Counselling Center (PIK) that already available.
