Abstract

Beauty is a benchmark, even though it is a relative concept in the culture of society, which will change over time. The most frequent and still popular beauty highlight among people is related to body shape. In the past, the ideal body image was depicted with a fat body, but now, through the onslaught of messages in the media, the ideal body is tall and thin. Various ways are done, especially by women to get the ideal body, one of which is through diet. Diet is considered to be one of the most effective and efficient ways to regulate eating patterns and life habits for a healthier and more stable body weight so as not to exceed normal body weight limits. There is a movement to campaign for body positivity, intended for women to accept whatever body shape they have and love them. This research focuses on observing the meaning of diet in campaigning for body positivity on the Instagram account @theantidietplan. This study uses a qualitative descriptive type approach using the critical discourse analysis method developed by Norman Fairclough. The results obtained from this study indicate that this account wants to explain the correct diet not because of the culture, but how to free oneself from these dietary cultures, then build a peaceful, trusting, and harmonious relationship with the food and body one has.

Abstract

The issue of feminism is always an interesting topic to discuss. The development of feminism in Indonesia itself is relatively slow. This is because Indonesia is attached to eastern culture which prioritizes customs and manners, where as we know most of the customs in Indonesia place women below men. In addition, feminism is also considered contrary to religious values. However, currently feminism has slowly been recognized and implemented in Indonesia. We can see this through how the mass media depicts women. In the past, women were used as objects in the mass media, one of which was film. Usually women are depicted as weak, powerless, beautiful, graceful and seductive. Even a film is considered interesting if the main actor is a woman. However, nowadays there are many films that place women on an equal footing with men. Stealing Raden Saleh is one of the Indonesian films that will be broadcast in 2022 which provides an overview of gender equality between men and women which is fought for by feminists. The purpose of this research is to represent the meaning of the message of feminism in the film Mencuri Raden Saleh. The writer uses a qualitative method and chooses John Fiske's semiotic analysis approach to convey the code and meaning in the film. The results of the study show that the representation of gender equality that feminists are fighting for in the film Mencuri Raden Saleh has three stages according to John Fiske, namely the level of reality, the level of representation and the level of ideology.

Abstract

Film is an embodiment of the representation of life in society through symbols, codes, ideology, mythology, and culture. Film is a popular mass media because it can represent people's lives at a certain place and time. In addition to its function as a medium of communication, film is also an entertaining work of art. The representation from reality showing rules, ideology, and culture. Feminism is an issue that is often raised in contemporary films. Feminism is a movement made by women to get rights and equality in society. One of the films that carries the theme of feminism is Enola Holmes 2. This study aims to examine how feminism in the Victorian era was represented in films. This study uses descriptive qualitative research methods with John Fiske's semiotic analysis method. Semiotics is a method that examines a meaning from the signs displayed. The result of this study is that the film Enola Holmes represents feminism in the 18th century with the signs contained in the film.

Abstract

Advertisement is a way to promoting products or services using the media as a channel. As a strategy for marketing products, advertisements often represent the products. Advertisements published in mass media, especially television, have the advantage of being able to display visuals and audio to their target audience. The masculinity that exists in energy drink advertisements can be seen from how the depiction of male figures, especially in Extra Joss advertisements ”Energi Plus Nyali” version which forms the image of male courage or virility. In this ad, there is no female figure at all. This is different from its competitor, Kuku Bima Ener-G, which still displays a female figure in its ad. This paper was conducted with the aim of explaining the representation of masculinity in the advertisement for the Energy Drink Extra Joss version of “Energi Plus Nyali” in forming an image of male courage or virility in heavy work done by men. This paper uses a type of research that is descriptive qualitative. with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis who will analyze and read how the marking of masculinity appears in the advertisement for the Energy Drink Ekstra Joss version of ”Energi Plus Nyali”. From the results of the analysis, the aspect of masculinity in this advertisement can be seen from the use of symbolic images, especially in men with the type of hard worker, muscular, sweaty, and macho in the Extra Joss advertisement version of " Energi Plus Nyali". Coupled with the strengthening of aspects of masculinity because there are no female actors in the advertisement

Abstract

The representation of the older people in the media has become a popular research for the last ten years. In their presence in media such as television, advertisements, and films, parents have two characteristics, namely positive and negative. Parents in the media are usually presented in two very contradictory forms.One of these forms is that of an elderly person who is weak, dependent, and experiencing signs of aging. Meanwhile, the other form represents parents who are agile and independent, as well as fighting the signs of aging. There are differences in the representation of parents in the media on television and drama. In dramas, positive aging has a contribution in changing cultural norms and values of aging. This studyuses a semiotic analysis descriptive approach which is a method in analyzing a study to examine signs. The signs in question are elements in looking for something on a particular object. In semiotic analysis it will help researchers to identify various signs in communication. Semiotic analysis is used to interpret artificial signs based on the researcher's rational logic. So that from these different thoughts gave birth to several schools of semiotics, namely semiotics of structuralism, pragmatism, and postmodernism.

Abstract

Currently, the campaign for the feminist movement has reached its third wave, namely the post-feminism wave. The movement was born because young women in the 1980s felt that the feminist movement was unsatisfactory and boring. Supported by the development of information technology, it is possible for post-feminism movement campaigns to be carried out through discourse in the form of writing, pictures, films, and other electronic forms. One way is to use film to convey the idea of feminism to the general public. Nowadays, many film studios have released films with female main characters as a form of concern for upholding gender equality between men and women. One of these films is the film series "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" season 1 episode 1. The purpose of this research is to find out how the representation of feminism of the main character in the film series "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" season 1 episode 1. This research uses descriptive-interpretative qualitative methods as well as Roland Barthes' semiotic theory to analyze and find out the signs that represent the main character's feminism in the related film. The results of this study indicate that the main character “Jennifer Walters” in the film series "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" season 1 episode 1, represents liberal and radical feminism. In addition, Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis in this study found a myth that related to the related film. The myth is that if women want to be seen as equal to men, they must have super powers to equal them. In fact, in real life you don't have to have super powers to be equal to men.

Abstract

The increasing number of users of beauty products has finally forced manufacturers to increase their production. Beauty products have increased very rapidly. One beauty product that currently has a lot of fans is MS Glow. The variety of beauty products circulating in society makes business competition even higher. In order to continue to exist in the market, MS Glow is increasingly aggressively attracting consumers. One way to attract the attention of consumers is with advertising. an MS Glow advertisement that was uploaded on the MS Glow Beauty YouTube account on April 4, 2022 entitled “MS Glow x Ayu Dewi. This advertisement was starred by one of the artists in Indonesia, namely Ayu Dewi. The advertisement tells the story of a housewife who is very happy with all the household activities she does. Being a versatile housewife is a dream for her. However, the ad does not only present herself as a housewife. She also appears as a career woman who does several jobs. From what the researchers observed, the ad contained signs that presented a new representation of femininity. This study uses Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis. And the results of this study show that the representation of new femininity is displayed by selecting the colors used in each scene, starting from the selection of sentences in the narration used, the selection of highlighted colors, the selection of properties such as clothing, make-up, cooking utensils.

Abstract

Hadirnya konsep femininitas membuat perempuan memiliki batasan tertentu dalam mengekspresikan diri. Namun seiring perkembangan zaman, stereotipe tersebut mulai bergeser karena banyak perempuan yang mulai terbuka untuk menampilkan kebebasannya dalam mengekspresikan diri. Salah satunya yaitu selebgram Dara Arafah melalui unggahan pada akun Instagramnya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap bagaimana pergeseran nilai femininitas tradisional yang ditampilkan oleh Dara Arafah. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dengan metode analisis semiotika John Fiske. Hasil yang didapat dari penelitian ini yaitu pada level realitas, kode sosial yang terkandung yaitu pada pada aspek penampilan yang menunjukkan dara yang merasa percaya diri dan menggambarkan kebebasan ketika mengendarai moge dengan pakaian yang sporty. Selain itu pada aspek riasan, dara menambahkan polesan lipstik merah dan kaca mata hitam membuat tampilannya semakin bold atau berwibawa. Kemudian di level representasi, kode sosial yang ditampilkan yaitu aspek latar berupa video ketika Dara mengikuti Lomba Piala Walikota Depok 2022. Selain itu, pada aspek musik ia memilih musik yang energik dengan lagu berjudul ‘unstoppable’ yang memiliki makna yang seolah-olah menggambarkan bahwa Dara adalah sosok yang kuat, tidak terkalahkan dan tidak akan berhenti untuk mencapai segala keinginannya. Sedangkan pada level ideologi, ideologi yang terkandung di dalamnya yaitu feminisme. Dari beberapa unggahannya terlihat bahwa Dara menggambarkan sosok perempuan yang pantang menyerah mencapai segala kemauannya dan keputusannya untuk berhijab tidak menghentikan semangatnya untuk terus mencapai prestasi. Ia juga tetap dapat menekuni hobinya yang cukup ekstrim, baik sebelum maupun sesudah berhijab.

Abstract

Understanding gender in society often finds faults regarding one's own gender and sex. This causes masculinity in women not to be fully recognized by society. The media as a mirror of reality is supposed to show everything according to what develops in society. Games and their rapid development so that they can be connected to the internet can be categorized as media that are currently in great demand by the public. Women in games are often interpreted as sensual and weak figures. Mobile Legends: Bang-Bang as one of the most popular MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) games shows heroes or characters that bring up masculine women through the codes they display. This study aims to determine the representation of the masculinity of female characters or heroes in the online game Mobile Legends: Bang-Bang. Using qualitative methods, this research makes semiotic analysis as its analysis technique. The semiotic analysis used is a theory by John Fiske that divides representations into three levels, namely the level of reality, the level of representation, and the level of ideology. Through this method, the heroes studied are four heroes with the most popular marksman, tank, fighter, and mage roles in the Legend tier and above. The results found from the four heroes that have been determined have a different masculinity code to highlight. These codes are seen in terms of appearance, movement, and story as the background of heroes created by game developers.

Abstract

Ageism is defined as discrimination shown to groups of elderly people. This research uses a qualitative method based on a critical discourse analysis approach to a movie that raises the theme of aging or aging entitled "The Intern '' (2015). Telling the story of the life of the elderly after their retirement, the film is interesting to study because of its sensitive position about aging, which according to some research, things related to aging are still portrayed with negative stereotypes in society. For this reason, this research aims to analyze the depiction of ageism in the film based on Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse, which is analyzed through several levels: macro structure, superstructure, and microstructure. The results obtained, the researcher states that the movie "The Intern" represents Ageism with a more positive image.
