Abstract

An experiment to study the effect of water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.) application and N, P, K fertilizer on growth and yield of rice was carried out on inceptisol soil at Mojosari Research Farm, Mojokerto, East Java, Indonesia, ± 100 m asl, from December 2007 to April 2008. The experiment was arranged in a Split Plot Design with three replications. Water lettuce application as main plot consisted of four treatments, they are: without water lettuce, water lettuce planted in the rice plot, water lettuce incorporated in the soil, and water lettuce applied as compost. Three dosages of N-P2O5 -K2O fertilizer as sub plot consisted of 135-27-30, 101.25-20.25-22.5, and 67.5-13.5-15 kg ha-1. The results showed that the application of 135-27- 30 or 101.25-20.25-22.5 kg N-P2O5 -K2O ha-1 and the application of water lettuce did not signifi cantly affect rice yields. The combination of 135-27-30 or 135-27-30 kg N-P2O5 -K2O of ha-1 and 3 ton water lettuce compost ha-1 increased the growth of rice at 30 days after sowing. Application of water lettuce did not interact with N, P and K fertilizer application in affecting rice yield components. Keywords: fertilizer, low external input, rice, water lettuce

Abstract

Aromatic new plant type (NPT) rice lines were selected to obtain high yielding and aromatic lines. The objectives of the research were to study the yield stability and adaptability of 35 NPTrice lines across different environment, with Ciherang and Sintanur as check varieties. The lines planted at two locations, Bogor and Pusakanagara in two seasons (2009 dry and wet seasons, DS-WS). The experiment used randomized complete block design (RCBD), with three replications. The 21-day-old seedlings were planted with spacing of 20 cm x 20 cm, with a plot size of 2 m x 5 m. Yield stability and adaptability were estimated by using coeffi cient regression (bi) and general mean of yield by Finlay-Wilkinson method. Combined analysis of variance showed that lines (G), environment (E), and the G x E interaction were signifi cantly different. Lines showed different stability and adaptability . Several lines yielded higher than Ciherang variety . Nine lines were classifi edasstable and widely adapted at the marginal environment, i.e IPB 116-F-3-1, IPB 117-F-4-1, IPB-117-F-14-2, IPB-117-F-15-2, IPB-117-F-17-5, IPB 140-F-1-1, 140-F-IPB, 2-1, IPB 140-F-3, and IPB 149-F-2. Lines IPB 113-F-2, IPB 140-F-4, IPB 140-F-6, IPB 140-F-7, and B11738-MR-Si-1-2-1-2 were not stable and adapted only in optimum environmental condition (bi > 1) while IPB 116-F-46-1, IPB-117-F 17-4, IPB-117-F 18-3 and B11955-MR-84-1-4 has the value of bi < 1 or adaptable to marginal environments. Keywords: aromatic rice, NPT rice, yield stability

Abstract

Ethyl Methane Sulfonate (EMS) may induce mutation leading to somaclonal variation if it is used at the appropriate combination of EMS concentration and exposure time. Variation in somaclonal might be valuable as a source of resistance to plant pathogens including plant viruses. This study was aimed 1) to determine the optimum EMS concentration and incubation time that may induce somaclonal variation in chilli pepper; and 2) to evaluate the resistance of the somaclone to ChiVMV infection. Shoot-tip explants of fi ve chilli pepper genotypes (Jatilaba, ICPN 12#4, PBC495, Helem, and Gelora) were treated with EMS at combination of different concentrations (0.25%, 0.5% 1.0% and control), and incubation time (15, 30, 60 min). Subsequently, each explant was grown in multiplication media (MS media + 5 mg L -1 BAP + 0.5 mg L-1 TDZ), rooting media (MS media + 1 mg L-1 NAA), and acclimatization media (mixture of soil : sand : compost 2:1:1 w/w). Our results showed that the higher EMS concentration and the longer incubation period the smaller the number of survive explants. The highest survival rate 20.4 % was achieved with 0.5% EMS in combination with 60 min incubation period. This treatment combination also showed induction of phenotypic variation. Two somaclonal plants derived from Gelora genotype, designated as somaclones K1 and K2, survived until fruit development and maturation. A total of 245 progenies of K1 and 243 progenies of K2, respectively were evaluated for their resistance to ChiVMV infection through mechanical inoculation using ChiVMV-Cikabayan isolate. Following the detection of ChiVMV using DAS-ELISA, it was confi rmed that 4.09% of the somaclonal progenies were resistance to ChiVMV. Abstract

Iron (Fe) toxicity is a major constraint in rice production that decreases yield due to high level of soluble Fe. The aims of this experiement were to study the effect of particular Fe concentrations in nutrient solution on rice growth, and to determine Fe concentration in nutrient solution that caused light, moderate, and severe Fe toxiciy symptom. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, Bogor Agricultural University from May to July 2010. A randomized block design with two factors and three replications were used in this study. The first factor was Fe concentration in the medium solution (2, 50, 100, 200, 400, 600 ppm Fe), and second factor was rice genotypes (IR64, Margasari). The results showed the higher Fe concentration in the solution resulted in higher scores of iron toxicity symptoms, higher Fe levels in the plant, and caused stunted growth of rice plants. Levels of Fe in a solution of ≥ 200 ppm Fe inhibited plant growth. Iron toxicity symptom in Margasari was lower than the IR64 varieties, especially at concentrations of 200 and 400 ppm. According to the regression equation Y = 0.022X+ 1849, Fe concentration in the solution which caused light Fe toxicity symptom (score ≤ 3) was ≤ 52 ppm Fe, moderate (score = 5) was 143 ppm Fe, heavy (score = 7) was 234 ppm Fe, and severe (score ≥ 9) was ≥ 325 ppm Fe. Abstract

ABSTRACTThe fruit of ornamental chili functioned as ornamental as well as for consumption, and therefore it requires diversity of traits for selection process. Information on inheritance pattern of the traits are needed for effective selection. The ideotype of ornamental chili are shortened internode that form a bouquet of flowers, erect fruit orientation and contain anthocyanins for attractive appearance. The research was aimed to study qualitative characters inheritance associated with shortened internode, fruit orientation and anthocyanins content. This study used 6 population including female parent (P1) which has anthocyanin in flower parts, the male parent (P2) bird pepper which has the character of a shortened internode, F1, F1R, BCP1, BCP2, and F2. Data were analyzed with Chi-square test to determine the Mendelian ratio in the F2 population. The results showed that there were characters that was controlled by one gene or two genes. Shortened internode and erect fruit orientation were controlled by a single recessive gene with a ratio of 1:3. On the other hand the color of anthocyanin in the anther stem was controlled by one dominant gene with a ratio of 3:1. The characters controlled by two genes that were dominant and recessive epistasis was the color of anthocyanins in the anther with the ratio 13:3.Keywords: Mendelian ratio, antosianin, shortened internode

Abstract

AbstractRice lodging due to incident of extreme weather, i.e., combination of strong winds and high rainfall is eviden in Indonesia. However, yield loss in the area is rarely studied. In order to estimate yield loss on rice, a model for calculating the yield reduction was developed. The objective of present study was to analyze the effect of strong winds and high rainfall incidents on yield loss of rice in the field. The study was conducted at the Sawah Baru IPB, Bogor, Indonesia from February to April, 2016 on rice plots severe from natural incident of strong wind and high rainfall. The results showed that rice lodging from strong wind and high rainfall formed patterns and specific formations. We determined four major lodging formations,  five lodging degrees, and eleven different patterns due to wind direction. Overall, lodging occured on research area of 27.6% with production loss up to 11.89%. This research showed that estimation of yield loss due to incident of extreme weather could be conducted in the level of field based on area of coverage and degree of lodging. Application of the model on wider area needs further evaluation. Keywords: Agronomic character, extreme weather adaptation, modelling, lodging, rice variety

Abstract

Soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) demand is high in Indonesia, however national production is low, therefore improving productivity is important. The research was aimed to determine the effect of application of biofertilizer containing N- fixing and P- solubilizing bacteria on the growth and production of soybean in lowland swamp. The experiment was conducted  at  Labuhan Ratu VI Village, District of Labuhan Ratu, East Lampung Regency from September to December 2014. The experiment was arranged in factorial randomized block design with three replications. N and P fertilizers were applied in four levels. Doses of N were 0, 11.25, 22.50, 33.75 kg ha-1, doses of P were 0, 36, 72, 108 P2O5 kg ha-1, in combination with and without biofertilizer application. The results showed that interaction between biofertilizer and N significantly affected number of branches and number of leaves at maximum vegetative phase. The influence of three types of fertilizer had no significant effect on the productivity of soybean in lowland swamp with soil pH of 7.0 and medium soil fertility. It is recommended to apply Biofertilizer + 11,25 kg N ha-1 + 36 kg P2O5 ha-1 to obtain high soybean production in lowland swamp area. Keywords: nitrogen, phosphate, productivity, soil fertility

Abstract

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is prospective crop for food as well as feed and bioenergy. It adapts to wide agroclimate and agroecology. However, the productivity is accounted low in Indonesia. Low productivity of sorghum can be enhanced through intensification, e.g., precise dose of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers application. The aim of this research was to determine the optimum dose of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers to maximize growth and yield of sorghum in latosol soil, in order to develop fertilizer recommendation on specific soil type. The research was conducted at Cikarawang, Bogor from March to July 2015. Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers were arranged and applied simultaneously using randomized completely block design with three replications. Nitrogen fertilizer was applied in five levels, i.e., 0, 60, 120, 180, 240 kg N ha-1 and phosphorus levels were 0, 18, 36, 54, 72 kg P2O5 ha-1. Results showed that the application of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers significantly increased vegetative growth and yield components. The optimum dose were 161 kg N ha-1 (133.7%) and 43 kg P2O5 ha-1 (121.5%) for latosol soil. Keywords: fertilizer, optimum dose, soil type, vegetative, yield component
