Abstract

Since 1971, the shipbreaking industry in Bangladesh has grown rapidly, employing approximately 40,000 to 50,000 underprivileged workers from the most underdeveloped regions of Bangladesh. After working for 15-20 years, they leave this industry for different sorts of physical problems, which lead to a low quality of life. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the livelihood status of the out-migrant workers in the shipbreaking industry of Bangladesh. The instruments used for this research were a semi-closed-ended survey questionnaire, in-depth interviews, ethnographic participant observation, and secondary research. The respondents are from the southern and northern parts of Bangladesh, aged 18 years and older. This study has discovered no significant differences between northern and southern out-migrant workers in asset ownership, goods, or housing quality. However, the southern out-migrant population earned relatively more than the northern migrants due to better access to capital and institutional support. This study also shows that after working a few years, young people desire to do external migration for better income opportunities. Despite minimal overall improvement in livelihood status, southern migrants earn comparatively better. Therefore, the government and other stakeholders must bridge the gap of unequal socio-economic development between the southern and northern regions.

Abstract

Digital transformation holds significant promise for revolutionizing education in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This paper examines the challenges of digital transformation in education in the SSA region. We observed that the challenges are multifaced, including infrastructure deficits, access and equity barriers, digital literacy gaps, financial constraints, policy challenges, and regulatory barriers. To overcome these challenges, the paper offers some recommendations that can help the SSA countries to unlock the transformative power of digital technologies to advance education, empower learners, and build a brighter future. Amongst other, the paper suggests that stakeholders must adopt an integrated approach to infrastructure development, promote equitable access and inclusion, invest in capacity building and skills development, localize educational content, mobilize financial resources, enact policy and regulatory reforms, and foster collaborative partnerships.

Abstract

Lack of intelligence collaboration is considered to be one of the fundamental problems in tackling terrorism in Indonesia. However, amidst the negative attention, there are efforts by BNPT (National Counterterrorism Agency) to improve collaboration between intelligence agencies. By using Weiss's theory to analyze various statements from public officials and state institutions regarding the issue of intelligence agency cooperation in Indonesia, this paper finds two important conclusions. First, efforts to encourage the formation of intelligence collaboration have actually been carried out by BNPT by equalizing perceptions among various intelligence agencies in viewing the problems and issues of terrorism. This is evidenced by a series of training conducted by BNPT in the period 2020-2023 which aims to encourage synergy between intelligence agencies related to terrorism issues. Second, still in line with what Weiss revealed, BNPT's steps with this series of training are inseparable from the external pressure sourced from public opinion in encouraging the formation of cooperation. In this case, the strong public demand for the importance of intelligence collaboration in dealing with the problem of terrorism is inseparable from the intensity of terrorism attacks that occurred from 2016 to 2021. The bomb attacks that occurred during this period led to polemics over the function of intelligence, which in turn shows the importance of intelligence collaboration as an important component of counterterrorism.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the attitude, and Practice of female sex workers towards Pre-exposure Prophylaxis for HIV prevention in the Kicukiro district, Rwanda. The study used a descriptive cross-sectional design, using a probability sampling method, and the Yamane formula was used to calculate the sample size of 300 female sex workers including a 10% non-response rate. Primary data was collected using a structured questionnaire, at 10 health centers. Analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS software, with chi-square tests and logistic regression for inferential analysis. The ethical clearance was acquired from the Mount Kenya University ethics committee and the Young Women Christian Association Rwanda. The study findings showed that (60%) of female sex workers have a positive attitude towards PrEP, and 60.4% of respondents were using PrEP. Demographic factors like age group, marital status, and Ubudehe category were significantly associated with practices. Female sex workers aged between 25 and 29 had 4 times more chance to have good practices. This study provides insights into improving PrEP education and interventions targeting female sex workers and other key populations. These findings highlighted the concerns about stigma and privacy, and the need for public health interventions that target it in the community.

Abstract

The swift development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, including the conversational AI tools like ChatGPT, has had a profound impact on several industries, including business, education, and communication. ChatGPT provides creative ways to preserve holy writings, teach religion, and make spiritual counselling more accessible. It also has special religious ramifications, especially in Africa where religion is closely linked to social identity and unity. This study examines how AI and religion sustainability connect in Africa, stressing both the advantages and disadvantages of using AI into religious rituals. These tools encourage inclusivity and involvement, particularly among younger generations. Their adoption, however, presents moral questions, such as the possibility of misinterpreting religious doctrine, the commercialization of spirituality, and challenges to established religious authority. This study critically investigates how AI shapes worldviews and religious experiences, drawing on theoretical stances such social cognitive theory. It makes the case for a well-rounded strategy that preserves the holiness and integrity of religious traditions while embracing the advantages of AI. The study adds to the continuing conversation on maintaining religious significance in a time of rapid technology advancement by highlighting culturally appropriate implementations and cooperative efforts among engineers, religious leaders, and legislators.

Abstract

This article discusses the theory and dynamics of economic growth in Indonesia with a focus on comparative analysis between conventional and Islamic economic approaches. The period studied covers the years 2018 to 2023, during which both economic systems show significant developments in their contribution to national economic growth. Conventional economics, with key indicators such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and per capita income, focuses on the accumulation of capital, labour, and technology. In contrast, Islamic economics prioritises the principles of justice, social welfare and the prohibition of usury, which are realised through instruments such as ZISWAF (Zakat, Infaq, Sadaqah and Waqf) and sharia-based finance. Through a descriptive-analytical approach, this article identifies the advantages and challenges of both approaches. Conventional economics offers rapid growth but often faces problems of inequality and social exclusion. On the other hand, Islamic economics contributes to financial inclusion, economic equity and poverty alleviation, although it faces constraints in legal and regulatory infrastructure. The analysis shows that integration between the two approaches can provide a holistic solution for inclusive and sustainable economic growth in Indonesia, and support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Abstract

The multi-impact environmental damage that has an impact on climate change is the result of the lack of equitable distribution of utilization and control of resources due to the hegemony of power and authority forcing people to exploit nature. Poor environmental governance, which later became a source of crime and suffering for the community, was dominantly the result of the behavior (violence) of the authorities rather than the community’s low awareness and literacy. In Banyumas, climate balance is also an essential issue. This study aimed to find answers to whether the Young Muslim Civil Society in Banyumas has concerns about climate change and its governance. The UNICEF survey in 2021 stated that the younger generation in Indonesia has empathy for environmental governance. This study was field research with a sociological approach through the paradigm developed by Jamil Salmi about violence maps; direct violence, indirect violence (violence by omission), repressive violence, and alienation violence. To map their views, I collected 304 randomly selected samples for filling out a questionnaire based on direct validity and test-retest reliability indicators. According to the discourse of young Muslim Civil Society in Banyumas, this study indicated that repressive violence was an essential part of the nature of environmental violence in climate change. The Young Muslim Civil Society in Banyumas was overwhelmed with worries, which should encourage them not to let state administrators put forward desertion in responding to the global challenge; climate change.
