Abstract

Religious moderation is essential for fostering harmony in pluralistic societies, yet its contestation poses significant challenges in certain communities. This study examines the dynamics of religious moderation in Karangduwur Village, Petanahan, Kebumen, where four religious groups Muhammadiyah, Nahdlatul Ulama (Moderate Islamic Group), Salafi Wahabi, and Salafi Jihadi (Conservative Islamic Group) compete within the domains of worship, education, and social institutions. Using a qualitative research methodology, data were gathered through documentation studies and content analysis to explore the drivers of contestation and their impact on communal harmony. Findings reveal that tensions arise from differing interpretations of religious moderation, ideological divides, and contested religious authority. These factors foster a community dynamic marked more by serawung kalis (together but apart) than serawung nyawiji (together but unified). Influences such as shifting religious authorities, the rise of social media, and improved education levels further amplify these challenges. The study underscores the interplay between these local dynamics and broader issues like democracy and Islamic populism in Indonesia. By highlighting the complexities of religious moderation, this research emphasizes its importance in promoting social harmony and democratic inclusivity.

Abstract

This study examines the operational criteria for selecting and evaluating amil zakat in managing zakat fitrah funds in Salatiga City, Indonesia. It aims to identify challenges and propose reforms to enhance accountability and equitable distribution of zakat, supporting poverty alleviation. This research uses a qualitative field research design, data were collected via semi-structured interviews, observations, and document review in several mosques and UPZ units in Salatiga City. Content analysis identified key themes and examined selection criteria and administrative challenges with rigorous precision. The findings reveal that informal appointment practices and lack of standardized competency assessments undermine effective zakat management. Inconsistent distribution practices, seasonal collections, and reliance on ad hoc committees’ compromise transparency, reducing the socio-economic impact of zakat fitrah funds across community levels. The study’s results offer actionable recommendations for policymakers and zakat institutions. They are useful for enhancing governance in Islamic social finance, guiding reforms in zakat management, and improving equitable resource allocation in community development, religious studies, and socio-economic policy globally. The novelty, uniquely integrates traditional Islamic jurisprudence with modern administrative practices to develop a replicable framework for amil zakat selection. It advances current knowledge by addressing a critical gap in operational mechanisms, offering innovative insights into enhancing zakat management efficacy.

Abstract

This article examines the numismatic and historical significance of eight unpublished Abbasid gold coins housed in the Bangladesh National Museum, focusing on their identification, inscriptional analysis, and historical relevance within the context of early Arab-Bengal trade relations. Discovered in 1996 and 2002 in the Chandpur and Brahmanbaria districts, adjacent to the historically significant archaeological site of Samatata, these coins have received little scholarly attention beyond basic acquisition records. The study employs a historical-numismatic approach, integrating primary sources such as the coins themselves and museum records with relevant secondary literature. It uncovers key numismatic details, including issuing authorities, minting origins, physical characteristics, and inscriptions affirming Islamic monotheism and venerating the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Through analysis of these inscriptions, the study highlights notable features of Abbasid gold coinage and offers insights into the religious and political dynamics of the period. These coins serve as important material evidence within the broader historical context of early Arab interactions with ancient Bengal, particularly in the sphere of maritime commerce. References in Arab-Persian geographical texts further suggest Bengal's prominence as a commercial hub integrated into early Islamic trade networks. The discovery of these coins substantiates such accounts, illustrating the extent of Arab-Bengal trade relations from the eighth to the tenth centuries. Ultimately, the research situates these coins not merely as monetary instruments, but as artefacts of transregional connectivity and ideological dissemination during the early Islamic period.

Abstract

The effectiveness of a Qur'anic memorization program is significantly influenced by the methodology employed to ensure both the accuracy and sustainability of memorization. At the Ar-Rohman Orphanage in Purbalingga, the talaqqi method, where students attentively listen to the teacher's recitation and reproduce it with proper tartīl and tajwid, is the principal pedagogical approach. This study aims to examine the implementation of the talaqqi method in enhancing students' memorization proficiency and to identify key supporting and inhibiting factors. This article employs a qualitative case study design, data were gathered through observation, interviews, and documentation and subsequently analyzed through systematic data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the talaqqi method is operationalized in three main stages: preparation (prayers, mushaf readiness, murājaʿah), implementation (memorization submission, recitation correction, class supervision), and evaluation (daily, per juzʾ, and periodic five juzʾ reviews). Strategies for memorization retention include individual takrīr, incorporation into daily prayers, and peer collaboration. Supporting factors consist of a spiritually conducive environment, encouragement from caregivers and peers, and sufficient infrastructure, while challenges include difficulties in tajwīd, articulation (makhārij al-ḥurūf), and long-term retention. The talaqqi method is thus validated as an effective technique for fostering high-quality Qur'anic memorization.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore the elements of local culture that have become iconic symbols of Banyumas' cultural identity in the millennial era. It examines the community's perception of development grounded in these cultural icons and analyzes the processes of iconization and socialization of local culture within Banyumas' developmental framework. The study reveals that oral traditions, historical manuscripts, customs, folk games, traditional technologies, arts, language, and rituals are central to Banyumas' cultural identity today. The society highly values the transmission of arts and culture to younger generations, emphasizing traditional dance, music, and crafts. Moreover, there is a strong sense of pride in local tourist attractions, which are vital in promoting regional culture and supporting cultural revitalization. Despite modernization, concerns persist about preserving historical buildings unique to Banyumas. The paper highlights that successful iconization and socialization involve engaging the community through education and familiarization with cultural symbols. Promoting Banyumas' cultural icons to reach millennials effectively should leverage social media, influential figures, and media collaborations to enhance awareness and support sustainable cultural development.

Abstract

The tradition of madhhabs has been essential in shaping Islamic law, where the authority to issue fatwas guides Muslim communities and resolves legal issues. A crucial question concerns who legitimately holds this authority. This study examines the classical scholar al-Qarāfī's (626–684 AH/1228–1285 CE) contributions to fatwa authority, highlighting his flexible, integrative approach amid evolving legal needs. Using critical literature review and textual analysis, including al-Qarāfī's al-Furūq, the study explores the qualifications and limits of muftī and mujtahids, situating his views within historical debates on legal pluralism and madhhab adherence. Al-Qarāfī distinguishes two fatwa methodologies: qaulī (following authoritative madhhab opinions) and manhajī (employing ijtihad to derive new rulings). He permits qualified non-mujtahids (muqallids) to issue fatwas under certain conditions and classifies knowledge seekers (ṭālib al-‘ilm) into competency levels to define fatwa authority boundaries. His integrative model balances madhhab fidelity with flexibility, addressing tensions between orthodoxy and new legal realities. Al-Qarāfī's approach supports adaptive jurisprudence, recommending pluralism and methodological flexibility to meet modern Islamic law's complexities while preserving fatwa legitimacy.

Abstract

This study explores the historical significance of two unpublished human sale deeds, dated 1214 and 1215 (1807-1808 AD), preserved in the Bangladesh National Museum. Collected in 1980 AD from Mymensingh District of Bangladesh, they provide significant insight into the practice of self-slavery in Bengal during the early 19th century under British colonial rule. Written in Bengali and Sanskrit using the 19th century Proto-Bengali script, these deeds reveal the dire socio-economic conditions that compelled individuals to sell themselves or their family members into servitude in exchange for basic necessities such as food, clothing, and minimal monetary price. Employing a qualitative research approach, this study integrates document analysis, translation, and historical contextualization to interpret the texts and explore their legal, socio-economic, and cultural implications. The findings indicate that the devastating consequences of the Famine of 1770, the exploitative revenue system formed by the Permanent Settlement of 1793, and deep-rooted inequalities within rural society contributed to an environment in 19th century Bengal where survival often necessitated the forfeiture of personal freedom. By situating these findings within the broader context of global discussions on slavery, the research challenges the dominant colonial narratives of progress and highlights the inequality and labor exploitation in contemporary society.

Abstract

This paper explores the dynamics of the Indonesian government and society's support for Israel. By highlighting the attitudes of leaders, religious groups, movements, and various expressions in the media. By using qualitative methods, data obtained through library research and historical and discourse approaches to look deeply at symptoms and phenomena that have occurred and are likely to occur. This research reveals that public attitudes are influenced by religious identity, humanitarian values, and historical narratives disseminated through the media and religious organizations. Solidarity with Palestine has become an integral part of Islamic expression that is deeply rooted in society, driving social movements such as demonstrations, fundraising campaigns, and boycotts of products affiliated with Israel. Religious leaders, Islamic organizations, and social media play an important role in shaping collective perceptions that tend to reject the normalization of relations with Israel. Indonesia's foreign policy towards Israel is based on the principles of anti-colonialism and solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Political, ideological, and societal pressures have shaped this policy, with public opinion largely opposed to normalizing relations with Israel. Nevertheless, economic and trade interactions continue on an informal basis. This research concludes that Indonesian attitudes towards Israel are not only influenced by state policy but also by socio-religious factors that shape transnational solidarity and the collective identity of Muslim communities.

Abstract

Democracy is fundamental to any nation's growth, stability, and harmony. Nigeria's path to democratic governance has been complex and challenging, marked by corruption, military interventions, and persistent political instability. In this context, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have emerged as vital actors in promoting social justice, human rights, and good governance. This study evaluates the role and struggles of NGOs within Nigeria's democratic system, with a specific focus on Ilorin metropolis in Kwara State. Using a survey research design and a sample size of 155 respondents determined through Taro Yamane's formula, the study gathered data from residents to assess perceptions of NGO effectiveness and engagement. Findings reveal that NGOs must proactively engage policymakers and governmental institutions to influence policy formulation and implementation. However, a minority of respondents (10) strongly disagreed with the proposition that increased funding from government and international donors is necessary for NGOs to function effectively. The study recommends enhanced collaboration between NGOs and public officials to strengthen democratic governance through improved communication, policy advocacy, and institutional partnerships.
