Abstract

This article purpose to examine and criticize the tradition of relations between santri and kiai in Islamic boarding schools which are generally affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). NU is likened to a large Islamic boarding school, while the Islamic boarding schools scattered throughout the archipelago are miniatures of NU. NU's progress and contributions are very diverse and are felt to this day, especially the struggle to expel the invaders in the archipelago, culminating in the momentum of the November 10 battle in Surabaya through the Jihad Fatwa (Resolution) issued by KH. Hasyim Asy'ari as Rais Akbar NU at that time. Another contribution of NU that has had a broad impact in the field of education is the existence of Islamic boarding schools which are estimated to have emerged in the 16th century AD. Islamic boarding school education is native to the archipelago and is claimed to be the oldest education system. Apart from being taught religious sciences such as jurisprudence, faith and morals, character education is also strongly instilled in Islamic boarding schools through direct education from a kiai. However, in practice, there is often an excessive cult of kiai due to several underlying factors, highlighted here is the aristocracy tradition inherited from the palace which is reflected in the santri's ethics towards kiai.

Abstract

This study analyzes social polarization toward religious groups considered deviant in Central Lombok, where movements such as Wahdatul Wujud, Islam Sasak, Shamsiyah, and Ahmadiyya have developed distinct religious interpretations. Their presence has raised concerns about doctrinal purity and social stability within the Muslim-majority community. Using Karl R. Popper’s theory of social polarization, this research explains the tendency of local society to adopt closed attitudes toward religious interpretive diversity. The study employs a qualitative approach, with data collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, which were analyzed thematically to capture prevailing social dynamics. The findings indicate that the emergence of these groups is driven by several factors, including low levels of religious literacy, the persistence of local cultural traditions, and dissatisfaction with formal da'wah practices. These conditions contribute to social division between groups defending orthodox Islamic teachings and those advocating greater religious freedom. The response of governmental and religious authorities particularly through heresy fatwas issued by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and intensified surveillance has further strengthened polarization. As a result, affected groups experience stigma, social exclusion, and occasional conflict, with the Ahmadiyya community facing the most severe pressure. The study concludes that strengthening inclusive religious education, promoting intergroup dialogue, and implementing strategies of religious moderation are crucial to reducing polarization and fostering social harmony in Central Lombok.

Abstract

This reasearch is titled Analysis of the Mediation Process of the Sumbawa-Bali Ethnic Conflict 2013. This conflict is one of the significant events involving social tensions between two ethnic groups, triggred by social jealousy and economic inequality. This study aims to deeply analyze the mediation process, especially in building effective dialogue to create sustainable conflict resolution. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection techniques were conducted through in-depth interviews and document analysis with research subjects including Mediators from the Sumbawa Regency Regional Government, in this case handed over to the Religious Harmony Forum (FKUB), representatives of the conflicting parties, namely Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia (PHDI), and several involved actors, namely the Secretary of the Tana Samawa Traditional Institution (LATS). Data was analyzed using the Miles and Huberman technique, which includes Data Reduction, Data Presentation, and Conclusion Drawing. The results show that the conflict mediation process did not directly involve representatives from both parties, namely the Samawa ethnic group and the Bali ethnic group, so the mediation stages of the PUSAD Paramadina theory were not carried out, neither the problem identification stage nor the problem-solving stage. Mediation focused more on formal resolution, such as law enforcement and physical reconstruction, without addressing the main root causes, namely, socio-economic inequality. This led to a lack of deep dialogue and long-term peace in conflict resolution
