Abstract

This paper is an attempt to analyze stylistically Bacon’s essays. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the writing style of Francis Bacon in the following selected essays (Of Studies, Of Revenge, OF Ambition, and Of Marriage and Single Live). Researchers analyzed the writing style of Bacon in these essays, specifically the aphoristic style. One of the most crucial characteristics of Bacon’s essays style is aphorism. It is a style which specified by direct, straightforward, pithy and concise language. Apart from this, utilitarianism which is another feature of Bacon’s essays style, has been clarified clearly. Utilitarianism is a philosophy of thought that maintain and support that the foremost actions are those that create the most happiness for the greatest number of people. In fact, researchers have found some elements regarding the selected essays such as didacticism, mannerism as well as worldly wisdom that introduce Francis Bacon as utilitarian writer. Moreover, other crucial elements of Bacon’s essays such as quotations, impersonality, as well as paragraph have been analyzed very briefly in this paper. Actually, this study is based on qualitative research. Research design was the textual analysis in order to analyze the text. The main instrument was the text of Francis Bacon’s selected essays. The data were in the form of lines, sentences, phrases and words. To analyze the text, the researchers have used steps such as paraphrasing, analyzing, identification and classification. Finally, the result of this study shows the writing style of Francis Bacon which is based on the aphoristic, utilitarianism and other significant elements, like usage of impressive quotations, unique paragraph and Bacon’s objectivity regarding to his essays.

Abstract

The study investigated how gender and age disparities, and situation/ context shape the use of sex-related verbal taboos. It adopted the qualitative orientation which involved semi-structured interviews with a total of 20 participants drawn from four purposively chosen communities or Igbo areas namely, Edda/Afikpo, Owerri, Uzuakoli and Awka. It was framed around the taboo theory of gender differences. The study identified some terms relating to sex and other parts of the body which constitute verbal taboo, and highlighted how gender and age disparities, as well as contexts shape the use of the verbal taboos. It also observed more female restrictive use of the taboo terms/expressions than male which speaks to the culture of patriarchy. Varied contexts or situations of use of the taboo terms were identified including ‘closed’ and ‘open’ contexts. It was concluded that gender and age disparities as a feature of verbal taboos depend on the culture and their underlying beliefs and values.

Abstract

To learn a second language (L2), once mastered, entails various prospects for Filipinos. One of the goals of the K-12 curriculum is to strengthen communicative competencies, which include linguistic competence; however, it was reported that the English Proficiency Index (EPI) of the Philippines has continuously declined in 2019, a year after the first batch of Senior High School graduated. As the country’s EPI declines, it may negatively impact the competitiveness of Filipinos in the international arena. Additionally, this result demonstrates the presence of errors in the writing performance of the learners despite the change in the curriculum. This research utilized a descriptive method to analyze the corpus from 100 ESL learners of a private school in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur. The findings illustrate that the majority, or 96.3221% were local errors and among these were mechanical or orthographic errors which ranked first with 1677 or 33.70%. Furthermore, the most committed error was misuse or omission of verb tenses, followed by capitalization and punctuation marks. With these results, it is important to expose learners to the target language (TL) and teachers to create remedial writing programs focusing on the weakest linguistic areas.

Abstract

This research focused on causes of plagiarism among students and its reduction. Through qualitative research related to the first question that what is students’ understanding about plagiarism? How can they define the word of plagiarism? It is found that all the students have the same understanding of the meaning of the word of plagiarism and they defined it in different ways with same meaning they mentioned that it is taking of others work, idea or activity and name it as their own work. Related to the second question of the questionnaires that what type of plagiarism do the students familiar with? Different kinds of plagiarism found out through research namely intentionally, unintentionally, direct, self, accidental and source based on plagiarism. Related to the third question that what causes students’ plagiarism? it is found that there are different causes of plagiarism such as lack of content knowledge, having some problem on citation, references, lack of information, lack of enough ability how to do something, lack of hard working, academic pressure, fear of not to be succeed or have low grades in the exam are causes for their plagiarism. Related to the fourth question of the research on how plagiarism can be reduced among students? It is found that through giving good resources and lectures regarding research methodology section, hiring professionals, updating research methodology subjects and students should be taught and trained practical knowledge of the content of the research paper and teachers should have regular meeting with students related to their assignment. Related to the fifth question that what is instructor’s penalty for the students who plagiarize? It is found that teacher will not accept the assignment of the students and they will ask students to re- do it and if he/ she fined two students with the same paper or paragraphs he will reduce the grade for both of the students.

Abstract

Teaching methods have an impact on the learning process and it may or may not be useful for the students. This study explores the preferred teaching methods of English language used by English language instructors among a sample of English major students from Hebron university in Hebron, Palestine. 100 participants took part in this study. They are between 18 and 28 years old. Regarding their gender, eighty-four are females and sixteen are males from different levels of study. The study employed a quantitative research methodology. The researchers used a 15-item questionnaire to gather data. SPSS was used to analyze the data. Finding shows that the students prefer using communicative activities (Mean=3.34) and using technology (Mean=3.29) in the teaching process. The researchers concluded with a number of recommendations. The teachers should make a combination of teaching methods and techniques. Thus, the method will be successful, more effective and makes the teaching process efficient. In general, the results of the study may help instructors to become more professional and this is going to be reflected in their students' performance.

Abstract

In the context of globalization, countries not only compete in the fields of economics, science and technology, goods and services but also compete in the quality of education. In 2016, the AUN organization’s set of educational evaluation standards version 2.0 was launched, helping educational institutions in Southeast Asia in general and Vietnam in particular to improve and enhance the quality of education in a prompt sustainable way. The set of standards has been improved in Version 4.0 issued in 2022. Saigon University is a public university that has focused on improving the quality of education through applying the standards and criteria of the AUN-QA model to the quality management of training programs. In this article, we want to find optimal measures to improve the quality of training programs according to AUN-QA standards at the Faculty of Education, Saigon University to meet the needs of society.

Abstract

The primary objective of this study was to assess stress levels and analyze coping strategies among Magsaysay College students. Utilizing a descriptive correlational research design, the study explored the relationship between students' demographic profiles, including age, gender, marital status, year level, family income, and reported stress levels. It also examined the correlation between stress levels and the use of coping strategies. The research concluded that demographic factors do not have a significant impact on stress levels among students and that stress is a ubiquitous challenge for students across different backgrounds. Interestingly, there is a slight negative correlation between family income and stress levels among students; this relationship is not statistically significant. This suggests that students show resilience and do not let the challenges of lower family income escalate their stress levels appreciably. A positive correlation was identified between stress levels and the employment of coping strategies, indicating that students tend to rely more on coping mechanisms as stress levels increase. It was recommended that Magsaysay College’s Guidance Center enhance its mental health support services by providing more resources, educational programs, and online counseling on effective coping strategies. Local Government Unit (LGU) of Magsaysay and other stakeholders are advised to collaborate on community-based support programs and invest in mental health initiatives to bolster the well-being of the students. Such collaborative efforts could significantly contribute to a more supportive learning environment, fostering students' academic success and personal growth.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between students' mental preparedness, emotional competence, and their academic success in the context of the reintroduction of full in-person instructional setup after a hiatus of almost three years. Using a descriptive correlational research design, the study aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of these variables. The Grade 11 students from Langgal National High School were selected as the respondents. The findings highlight the significant influence of mental preparedness on students' performance in academic activities, underscoring the importance of being mentally prepared to address learning challenges, especially in the context of the pandemic. Additionally, the study reveals a moderate association between the level of emotional competence and academic success, emphasizing its role as a personal resource in adapting to the learning environment. Overall, the results suggest that students' mental preparedness and emotional competence during full in-person classes significantly contribute to their likelihood of achieving academic success.

Abstract

Along with the comprehensive innovation of Vietnam’s education system, vocational education is positively changing, making great contributions to the country’s education system. Along with the university education system, vocational education is considered a place to create new knowledge and technology; but up to now, the number of applications to establish protection of industrial property rights, especially inventions, still accounts for a low rate; the understanding of education and training staff in vocational education institutions (VEIs) about intellectual property rights is not high. Based on the study of state legal documents on intellectual property rights, this article surveyed 300 people who are managers, teachers, students, and pupils at several educational institutions in Ho Chi Minh City through surveys and interview questions. VEIs do not pay much attention to intellectual property activities in general and intellectual property propaganda activities in particular; there is no long-term plan and policy for implementing intellectual property activities and intellectual property propaganda at VEIs. Based on that reality, and an assessment of the current situation combined with state legal documents, this article proposes some management solutions to promote intellectual property activities and intellectual property propaganda activities in VEIs in near the future.

Abstract

This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, combining textual analysis with cultural and socio-cultural perspectives, to investigate the portrayal of social masks, identity construction, and resilience in Lualhati Bautista's novels, focusing on "Bata, Bata... Pa'no Ka Ginawa?" The study explores how selected characters navigate social roles, adopt personas, and engage in impression management within Filipino society. Through close reading and theoretical interpretation using Goffman's and Mead's frameworks, the research uncovers insights into the intricate dynamics of identity construction, social interaction, and resilience depicted in Bautista's narratives. Significant findings include resilience among characters and its intersection with identity construction and social interaction. Additionally, the study reveals the influence of cultural norms, historical events, and socio-economic factors on characters' identity construction and resilience strategies. It also highlights moments of authenticity, vulnerability, and resistance, analyzing how they challenge or reinforce social masks and identity performances. Overall, the research contributes to understanding the complexities of Filipino identity and resilience in contemporary society as portrayed in literature.
