Abstract

In this research, children used poster narratives to communicate their perspectives of the Marawi Siege. A social semiotic approach was utilized to understand their visualizations. This study aimed to look into the aspect of understanding the narratives of the child victims of the Marawi Siege through their drawings, referred to poster narratives in this study, by extracting the visual images present. The collection of data was limited to the two temporary shelters in Marawi: Boganga and Rorogagus. The researcher collected 40 poster narratives from the different temporary shelters in Marawi City, and the recurrent visual images were those of Social Actors, Shattered Place, Battle Aircraft and Weapons. The child-respondents included significant minute details in illustrating the social actors such as tears, sad and scared expressions, color and position, and at times, supported these emotions with texts which served as anchorage. From these findings, it could be drawn that a careful study of the shapes, strokes, colors, position, number and size of the images was of paramount significance to better understand the data output of the children-respondents. The posters are not meaningless forms or shapes. They convey materials or images from the deeper recesses of the minds or psyches of the respondents.

Abstract

This research aims to illuminate sexual grooming in academic settings, underscoring the imperative for awareness and preventive measures. The study is theoretically grounded in Ward and Sieger's Pathways Model, incorporating Finkelhor’s Precondition Model, Marshall and Barbaree’s Integrated Theory, and Hall and Hirschman’s Quadripartite Model. This comprehensive framework provides a nuanced understanding of the psychological mechanisms at play in sexual grooming. To address gaps in educators' awareness, the study utilizes random sampling to assess 25 teachers from senior high and tertiary levels. A survey instrument, featuring closed and Likert scale questions, gauges respondents' knowledge of sexual grooming definitions, signs, and prevalence in academia. Aligned with the UNICEF report on child sexual violence, the study underscores the urgency of tackling such issues. The conceptual framework employs the input-process-output model, considering teachers' profiles, survey responses, and potential implications for an awareness campaign. The methodology incorporates a structured online questionnaire covering demographic information, knowledge assessment, training awareness, reporting procedures, and the perceived importance of addressing sexual grooming. By exploring educators' comprehension and experiences regarding sexual grooming, this research strives to contribute to a safer learning environment. The findings will inform targeted training programs and bolster child protection measures within educational institutions. As dedicated proponents of the Department of Education's mission, the study endeavors to bridge the awareness gap and foster child-friendly, secure, and motivating academic environments.

Abstract

The current mixed methods study was an attempt to approach genre-based instruction from a fourfold perspective. As for the quantitative phase, first, it was aimed to examine the effect of genre-based instruction (GBI) on EFL learners’ argumentative essay writing performance. Second, the study investigated the overall organizational structure of learners’ argumentative essays in control and experimental groups. The participants of the study were 71 learners selected out of an initial number of 95 chosen based on convenience sampling. The selected 71 learners were divided into two groups of 35 and 36 who were assigned to the control and experimental group, respectively. Then, a writing pretest was administered to the two groups. After the treatment, the participants in both groups were given a writing posttest. The quantitative findings indicated that GBI was significantly effective on learners’ argumentative writing performance. Additionally, the quantitative structure analysis showed that the number of the argumentative essay elements in the essays of the experimental group was higher than those of the control group. Afterwards, ten participants in the experimental group were interviewed to seek their perceptions towards the efficacy of GBI in teaching argumentative essay writing and their authorial identity construction. The qualitative analysis of the interviews pointed to the learners’ positive attitudes towards GBI and the usefulness of this type of instruction for improving their argumentative writing performance. Finally, the ten participants in the experimental group reported their positive perceptions with regard to their authorial identity construction.

Abstract

This study critically synthesized the existing scholarly research on poetic devices, thematic significance, and social realities. The researcher used a critical literature review and content analysis to scrutinize scientific literature. Based on the review, this study bridges the gap between poetic form and societal critique, highlighting poetry's capacity for thematic depth and social analysis. The artful use of metaphors, personification, imagery, etc., empowers poets to address complex socio-political narratives within their work, positioning poetry as a mirror of society’s multifaceted issues. Poets from varied cultures have historically harnessed verse to reflect on universal themes such as mortality, justice, and human experiences, affirming poetry's role as both a narrative force and a societal barometer. Furthermore, poetry's archival value as a historical record is illuminated, capturing the spirit of different ages and contributing to our collective societal understanding. Through this synthesis, poetry is recognized as an enduring vehicle for exploring and challenging social dynamics, immortalizing the collective human psyche in rhythmic form. Through their craft, poets offer critiques and engage in the socio-political commentary that continues to shape the literary canon and our collective understanding. The study's findings underscore poetry’s timeless relevance as a medium for social critique and thematic exploration

Abstract

Safe space has become an imperative task for teachers because of its vital role in the teaching-learning process. Its meaning has developed over time due to its application in different instances. In academia, safe space is categorized as physical space, social space, and virtual space. Thus, this study aims to describe the knowledge, attitude, and practice of social studies teachers towards promoting safe spaces. The study utilized a descriptive quantitative approach consisting of 20 teachers as respondents from Ramon Magsaysay High School, Batasan Hills National High School, and Ilaya Barangka Integrated School. Findings indicate that the knowledge of the teachers in promoting safe space in three aspects is at a high level with a mean of 3.19 and a standard deviation of 0.66. Most of the time they practice promoting safe space in terms of physical space with a mean of 3.16 and standard deviation of 0.60, social space with a mean 3.28 and standard deviation of 0.69, and virtual space with a mean of 2.96 and standard deviation of 0.66. In terms of physical space, teachers give importance on routinary activities that ensure class and school are safe for the students. Further, in terms of social space, teachers practice values integration in their lessons on topics about respect for others regardless of their individual differences. Also, teachers are being held accountable for modeling this to the students such as avoiding discrimination and bias. Lastly, in terms of virtual space, teachers prepare students to be accountable for their actions online by reteaching the netiquette or dos and don’ts when using the internet. Findings of this study could be used as a guide by educational institutions when promoting safe space.

Abstract

This research discusses Serial Verb Constructions found in both written and spoken Arabic language. The study is conducted using Syntax Analysis, employing a qualitative descriptive research design. Data collection is done through document analysis and fieldwork by collaborating techniques of reading, listening, and note-taking. Data sources are obtained in two forms, written data sourced from the Quran, and field data acquired from conversations with students at Darularafah Islamic boarding school. The data analysis stage employs the method proposed by Sudaryanto (2015:15), which emphasizes language analysis tools derived from the language itself, delineated in basic techniques only. This research aims to classify the Serial Verb Constructions in the syntactic formation of Arabic language based on the relationship between the first verb (V1) and the second verb (V2). The findings show that there are patterns in forming serial verbs in Arabic, such as V1 + V2 Pattern, V1 + the letter أن /an/ + V2 Pattern, V1 + the letter /lan/ + the letter أن /an/ + V2 Pattern, إن /in/ + V1 + V2 Pattern, لم /lam/ + V1 + V2 Pattern, and كَيْفَمَا /kayfama/ + V1 + V2 Pattern.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the use of niergative verbs in two famous novels in Indonesian literature, namely "Laskar Pelangi" by Andrea Hirata and "Perempuan Berkalung Sorban" by Asma Nadia. Nirergative verbs, which do not require an object in the sentence, play an important role in stretching the story and characters in a narrative. This study analyzes the context of the use of nirergative verbs in the two novels, focusing on their influence on plot development, characterization, and theme. The results of the analysis show differences in the use of nirergative verbs in the two novels. "Laskar Pelangi" tends to use nirergative verbs to describe the character daily lives in the context of their school and neighborhood. On the other hand, "Perempuan Berkalung Sorban" emphasizes the use of nirergative verbs to explore the spiritual aspects and internality of its main characters, creating a more introspective feel. This study also discusses the implications of the use of nirergative verbs on the reader's understanding of the narrative and the message the author wants to convey. This comparison reveals that although both novels use nirergative verbs to achieve different literary effects, they both succeed in creating immersive stories and make significant contributions to Indonesian literature. This comparison provides a deeper insight into the use of non-nergative verbs in Indonesian literature and how their use can affect the narrative and the reader's understanding.

Abstract

This study determines the impact of school heads’ leadership styles on organizational innovativeness and performance of public elementary schools in Cebu City Division in the new normal. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was utilized to investigate the linear causal relationships among the variables. Moreover, the study found that transformational leadership of the school head is not related to the organizational innovativeness of the school. However, transactional, and instrumental leadership influence the organizational innovativeness of the schools. On one hand, participative leadership only promotes product innovation, while supportive leadership augments management innovation directly. Lastly, product innovation of the school impacts the school’s performance.
