Abstract

Excessive and prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause pigmentation, wrinkles, erythema, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Therefore, sunscreen products are needed to protect the skin from ultraviolet radiation. Fig fruit (Ficus racemosa L.) contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, steroids, saponins, and tannins that potentially act as natural sunscreen agents. This study aimed to evaluate the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) and irritation potential of sunscreen lotion containing ethanolic extract of Ficus racemosa L. fruit. The extract was obtained by maceration using 96% ethanol. SPF values were determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and irritation testing was conducted using the Human 4-Hour Patch Test with 15 healthy female volunteers. The SPF values of the formulation containing 0 g (F0), 0.125 g (F1), 0.250 g (F2), 0.500 g (F3), and 1.000 g (F4) extract were 1.3473, 1.5970, 2.4371, 4.1191, and 4.3891, respectively. Based on SNI number 16-4399-1996, only F3 and F4 fulfilled the minimum SPF requirement of 4. No erythema or edema was observed in all formulations. These results indicate that higher extract concentration increased sunscreen activity, and F3 and F4 showed the highest SPF values with moderate sunscreen protection.

Abstract

Waste cooking oil is a waste material with significant potential for utilization as a biodiesel feedstock; however, its high free fatty acid (FFA) content can reduce the efficiency of the transesterification process. This study aimed to investigate the effect of acidic and alkaline conditions on the presence of free fatty acids during the transesterification of waste cooking oil using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) catalysts. Prior to the transesterification process, the waste cooking oil was filtered and heated at 60°C for 30 minutes to reduce its moisture content. Transesterification was carried out using methanol at a methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 6:1 and a catalyst concentration of approximately 0.25% of the oil weight. The reaction pH was varied at 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, while the reaction temperature was maintained at 60°C for 1 hour. FFA content was analyzed before and after transesterification using an acid-base titration method with 0.1 N NaOH solution. The results showed that the initial FFA content of the waste cooking oil was 5.20%. The use of the NaOH catalyst resulted in final FFA contents of 3.00%, 2.55%, 1.90%, 1.75%, and 2.20% at pH 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, respectively, corresponding to FFA reductions of 42.3%, 51.0%, 63.5%, 66.3%, and 57.7%. Meanwhile, the KOH catalyst produced final FFA contents of 2.80%, 2.35%, 1.70%, 1.60%, and 2.05%, with FFA reductions of 46.2%, 54.8%, 67.3%, 69.2%, and 60.6%, respectively. The reduction in FFA content increased with increasing pH and reached its optimum condition at pH 9 for both catalysts. At pH 10, a decrease in FFA reduction efficiency was observed, which was likely attributed to the occurrence of side reactions such as saponification. Overall, the KOH catalyst demonstrated superior performance compared to NaOH in reducing FFA content under all tested pH conditions. These findings indicate that mildly alkaline to moderately alkaline conditions, particularly at pH 9, represent the optimum conditions for reducing FFA content during the transesterification of waste cooking oil.

Abstract

Chemistry learning emphasizes not only conceptual understanding but also laboratory activities to help students comprehend concepts in a concrete and contextual manner. However, learning materials at SMAN 1 Patianrowo are still dominated by printed textbooks, while limited laboratory equipment and materials have led to infrequent implementation of chemistry practicum activities. Consequently, students' engagement in learning, particularly on the topic of colligative properties of solutions, remains low. This study aimed to develop a chemo-entrepreneurship-based chemistry practicum e-module using the Project-Based Learning model on the topic of colligative properties of solutions. The product is an e-module published through the Heyzine Flipbook platform, integrating the chemo-entrepreneurship approach with the Project-Based Learning syntax through projects involving the production of ice cream, fruit syrup, gummy candy, and candied fruit. The e-module also includes Break-Even Point (BEP) calculations, Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis, as well as interactive QR codes providing access to demonstration videos, supplementary learning materials, practice exercises, and learning evaluations. This study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the 3D development model (Define, Design, and Develop). The research sample consisted of 36 twelfth-grade students in Class XII-1. The results indicated that the developed e-module was categorized as highly valid based on material expert validation (83.28%) and media expert validation (83.12%), highly practical according to students' responses (85.48%), and moderately effective in improving learning outcomes, with an N-Gain score of 56%.
