Abstract

This case study, which employs a qualitative research approach, seeks to explore the reasons behind the pronunciation of the phonemes /t/ and /l/ as apico-dental by some women in both English and Indonesian. The research specifically examines these phonetic variations among 43 second-year students from UAI, who are between the ages of 18 and 20 with a particular focus on how these variations relate to gender. It is significant to spot that the study excludes individuals with speech disorders such as slurred speech or dysarthria, concentrating instead on participants with standard articulatory functions. The participants included 22 students from class IG22A (8 males, 14 females) and 21 from class IG22B (8 males, 13 females). Results revealed that only female participants exhibited apico-dental pronunciation of these phonemes, with no male participants showing this variation. Specifically, six women pronounced /t/ apico-dentally at the end of words like "bat" and "pahat," while tour pronounced /l/ similarly at the end of words like "peel" and "apel". Despite initial unfamiliarity with the correct pronunciation, participants quickly adapted after receiving corrections, suggesting the apico-dental articulation was habitual rather than a difficulty or a deliberate attempt to express sensuality. However, in-depth study links the tongue, in contact with teeth, movements to sensuality, indicating potential subconscious influences.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study contributes to the identification of sustainability literacy variables for language teaching in higher education. Prior studies have addressed sustainability literacy through curriculum development, environmental education, and technological adoption. Sustainability literacy ensures that higher education academics have sustainability knowledge, adopt and perform sustainable practices or attitudes. However, previous studies neglect how environment, economy, social variables of sustainability literacy are disseminated in language teaching. The language teaching has not addressed sustainability themes in language skill courses such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Thus, this study aims to generate sustainability literacy variables that can be used as sustainability themes in the language teaching. A bibliometric analysis through VOSviewer is employed to collect the variables from the Scopus database by determining keywords. The present study employs BOOLEAN search with some keywords including “sustainable literacy”, “sustainability literacy”, “environmental literacy”, “higher education”, “university”, “institute”. In addition, inclusion criteria include journal article as type document, English language, and open access. The 106 documents met the criteria ranging from 2008 to 2024. The results indicate that there are eight groups of sustainability themes related to sustainability literacy. Of the eight groups, sustainability literacy variables selected for the language teaching consist of climate change, energy efficiency, renewable energy, economic growth, digital economy, financial knowledge, global citizenship, and knowledge sharing. The variables give implications both in practice and theory. Keywords: Sustainability literacy; higher education; language teaching; VOSviewer.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of skimming and scanning strategies in enhancing students' TOEFL reading skills. Conducted through Classroom Action Research (CAR), the study involved 36 eleventh-grade students from a private high school in Batam. Participants were selected using a purposive sampling technique, assisted by the former teacher. The research was carried out in four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. A pre-test and a post-test were administered to evaluate student progress, along with field notes to document classroom observations. The effectiveness of the intervention was assessed by comparing the pre-test and post-test results. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in students' TOEFL reading comprehension. The average pre-test score increased from 69.47 to 82.23 in the post-test, which is classified as "very good" according to the scoring criteria. These results suggest that incorporating skimming and scanning strategies into TOEFL reading instruction significantly enhances comprehension skills. The study highlights the effectiveness of these strategies in improving students' reading abilities and overall TOEFL performance. Future research could explore the long-term effects of skimming and scanning strategies and compare them with other reading methods in TOEFL preparation.Reading Strategies; Scanning; Skimming; Toefl Reading.

Abstract

Colonial trauma has left a lasting imprint on postcolonial literature, shaping narratives of displacement, resistance, and cultural transformation. This study examines Kofi Awoonor's The Weaver Bird using a cognitive stylistic approach to uncover the mental processes influencing readers' perceptions of colonialism. African poetry remains underexplored in cognitive stylistics, making this study significant in broadening the scope of literary analysis. By integrating Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Blending Theory, this research explores how Awoonor's language constructs an embodied experience of loss and perseverance. Employing a qualitative method, the study conducts a close textual analysis to identify cognitive mechanisms shaping meaning in the poem. Findings reveal that metaphorical structures trigger cognitive processes that reinforce postcolonial awareness and collective identity. This study contributes to both literary and psychological research by demonstrating how poetry functions as a cognitive tool in processing historical realities. Its implications suggest that literature is not merely a reflection of history but an active force in shaping thought, memory, and resistance.

Abstract

This study investigated the translation of Surah Yasin from Arabic into the Rejang language, focusing on translation techniques and quality. The objective was to evaluate how meaning was preserved and conveyed through this localized translation. The research involved a content analysis of the translated work titled Alquran Ngen Tai Ne Lem Baso Jang and was complemented by Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with two expert raters and members of the translation team. The primary participants were seven Rejang language translators from IAIN Curup, each contributing their linguistic and religious expertise. The researchers adopted a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing document analysis and FGDs to gather data, and applied Miles and Huberman's interactive model for analysis. Findings revealed that the most frequently used translation technique was “established equivalent” (64.08%), followed by explicitation (16.54%) and addition (5.94%), reflecting efforts to ensure clarity and contextual understanding. The translation quality scored an average of 2.95 out of 3, with high readability (3.00) and acceptability (2.98), though accuracy (2.93) showed room for refinement. These findings imply that localized religious translations, when done thoughtfully, can maintain both theological integrity and cultural relevance, thus aiding comprehension among minority language speakers.

This study used a qualitative method using an ethnographic approach. This research was conducted at SMPN 1 Langsa with the subject of three English teachers. The data collection techniques used were observation and interviews. Abstract

The research examines how Bangladeshi tertiary students perceive social context and sociolinguistic factors that influence their learning of English. Understanding the influence of social contexts and sociolinguistic elements on English acquisition is essential to create effective educational methods because English language proficiency matters in Bangladesh's current globalization process. The study addresses three essential inquiries regarding social factors that influence target language acquisition and their variation between Bangla and English medium education environments, as well as their influence on final language performance results. Through quantitative research methodology, data were collected from 40 tertiary-level students (equally distributed between Bangla and English medium backgrounds) from three universities using a 15-question survey instrument. The research data demonstrates substantial differences between Bengali and English schools regarding how students learn language. Students from English-medium institutions receive early home-based exposure to English which along with family language usage and continuous motivational support leads to better English skill development while Bangla-medium students encounter English mainly in educational institutions (75%) where they study English as a subject (80%) yet they receive less institutional support for extracurricular English learning. Socioeconomic status proved essential for understanding success in language learning since participants pointed to restricted contact opportunities and ill-prepared teachers, together with limited resources, as essential challenges that prevented underprivileged students from mastering English language skills. Cultural beliefs, along with linguistic nationalism, function as additional obstacles for students to practice English. This scholarly work provides crucial information to second language acquisition theory because it shows how the educational medium, together with socioeconomic background and cultural environment, and motivational elements, develop separate paths for language acquisition. Research data should guide the creation of inclusive language teaching practices and policies that accommodate Bangladesh's varied sociolinguistic diversity.
