Abstract

This study examines the phonetic changes that occur in the Indonesian language among Indonesian speakers. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of Bahasa using the framework of Optimality Theory. The primary objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive description of the facts and give a theoretical framework for the alteration of phonemes in Bahasa. Additionally, it aims to examine how native speakers pronounce and utilise these phonemes in communication. Phonemic intervention gives rise to various issues, such as assimilation. One potential way to address this issue is the use of Optimality Theory. This study focuses on analysing the diphthong /ai/ in Bahasa Indonesia and its interaction with other phonemes using the framework of Optimality Theory. The study of optimality theory and assimilation in diphthongs enhances our comprehension in specific words of Bahasa Indonesia phonology. Additionally, evidence highlights the significant presence of implicit figures in recent advancements in Optimality Theory.

Abstract

This research was utilized stylistic analysis tools at the phonological level in the poem titled “Harlem” by Langston Hughes. By leveraging the collective cultural scheme of the Harlem Renaissance, Hughes establishes a connection with the reader, eliciting specific cultural and emotional reactions. The study will be conducted using a qualitative method, followed by organizing the research data into a table and analyzing it by identifying dominant consonants and vowels. The research findings reveal a correlation between the dominant sounds and implicit themes in the poem. Surprisingly, the dominant sounds which is consonant give rise to words such as ‘tear’ and ‘star’, which are related to the theme of the Harlem poem. Both words obtained in this study strengthen the message and emotions conveyed by Hughes regarding the feelings of black individuals. In undertaking this research, it aids researchers in understanding the purpose, intent, and even the style of the author in creating the poem. In this particular poem, Hughes avoids repetition of themes but conveys the feelings of black individuals implicitly. This research contributes to deepening the understanding of stylistic elements at the phonological level and fosters an appreciation for a literary work.

Abstract

This Classroom Action Research (CAR) investigated the effectiveness of Domino Tenses Learning Media (DOTEN) in enhancing students' mastery of the simple present tense in English. The study involved 25 seventh graders (15 females, 10 male) from class VII.A at SMPN 1 Langsa, Indonesia. A two-cycle CAR design was employed, with each cycle consisting of two meetings. Data collection methods included observation, document analysis, and pre- and post-tests. Jean McNiff's CAR framework guided the research process, encompassing planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The findings demonstrated a significant improvement in students' understanding and application of the simple present tense after utilizing DOTEN media. The minimum mastery criterion (KKM) for this study was set at 72. The average score in cycle I was 50.96, rising to 73.3 in cycle II. This increase suggested that DOTEN media effectively facilitated learning. Additionally, observations revealed a positive shift in student attitudes towards learning the simple present tense. Students displayed increased engagement, characterized by smiles, laughter, and active participation during DOTEN activities. These observations suggested that the game-based nature of DOTEN media fostered enjoyment and motivation, ultimately contributing to improved learning outcomes. In conclusion, this study provided evidence that DOTEN media is valuable tool for enhancing students' mastery of the simple present tense. The research findings offered valuable insights for English language educators seeking to integrate engaging and effective instructional strategies into their classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to describe translation ideology in translating cultural words of the “Educated” memoir by Tara Westover. The research method is descriptive qualitative. The data taken are in the form of words or phrases related to cultural words in “Part One” of “Educated” by Tara Westover and its translation. This article analysed the theories of cultural categories by Newmark (1988), translation methods by Molina & Albir (2002), and translation ideology by Venuti (1995) . The research finding demonstrates four categories of cultural words in the memoir, such as ecology, material culture (artifact), social culture, and organization, custom and ideas. Furthermore, translation techniques applied by the translator were borrowing, amplification, description, adaptation, literal translation, established equivalent, and calque. The findings of this research show that the most dominant technique used in this memoir is borrowing (64%). In terms of translation idelogy, the findings of this study indicate that foreignization is more prevalent than domestication. The research result can provide insights to EFL learners, especially in translation materials, to be more careful in translating cultural words because of the cultural barriers between the SL and TL. Moreover, this study contributes to developing cultural and linguistic studies by exploring domestication and foreignization ideologies in translating English literary works into Indonesian.

Abstract

This study investigates the second language acquisition of Alesha, a 6-year-old girl. Despite mastering her mother tongue, Indonesian, Alesha has been exposed to English since a young age through interactions with her parents and media. The study focuses on Alesha's ability of her second language in daily contexts, particularly in interactions with her mother. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research aims to comprehend phenomena by providing detailed descriptions and interpreting their meanings, without using numbers or statistics. Data collection involves interviews, where conversations between the mother and child are recorded, with the researcher noting relevant information. Findings reveal that although Alesha can communicate in English, there are syntactic constraints evident in her sentence patterns, particularly regarding the use of auxiliary verbs and distinguishing between plural and singular nouns. These findings align with observations that Alesha's exposure to her second language is inconsistent. The article highlights the importance of consistency in second language learning patterns for children, whether through parental involvement or media exposure. Research on Alesha is beneficial for parents, language educators, and researchers in understanding children's language development and designing more effective teaching stategies. Furthermore, those interested in researching the same topic are advised to conduct a research with subjects of the same age as Alesha, as well as analysis with other related variables, for a better understanding of second language acquisition in 6-year-old children.
