Abstract

Abstract

Demi kebutuhan hidup, Al-Qur’an mendorongmanusia mencari harta.

Abstract

The problem that is currently being faced by the world, including Indonesia, is the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic, that has hit the world since the end of 2019, has not shown any signs of ending soon. Covid-19 has claimed many victims and caused enormous losses. In Indonesia, the losses are countless. Suffering, both physical and financial, has become a serious common concern. However, in the midst of such a situation, there are still people who use this pandemic as a business field to illegally reap as much profit as possible. The author conducted a literature research on the misuse of the Covid-19 protocol, by taking data from various available media sources, and then formulated a synthesis. The conclusion that can be drawn from this synthesis is that the effectiveness of the law that underlies the implementation of the Covid-19 mitigation protocol has not been running optimally. There are still people who misuse the protocol as an opportunity to enrich themselves amidst people’s suffering.

Abstract

In this article, the author sheds light on the theme of “hope” in three sections, namely: the praxis of hope, hope in Emmanuel Levinas’ philosophy, and hope in the theology of Johann Baptist Metz. Despite its crucial role in human existence, hope is rarely discussed in philosophy. Difficult life events, such as this covid-19 pandemic, challenge us reflect more deeply on hope. The author emphasizes that hope should be treated as “a faithful friend”, not merely as an abstract concept. With hope along the journey, we are empowered to survive in the midst of suffering, to face the waves of anxiety, and to transcend our frailty. By taking inspiration from Levinas’ philosophy and Metz’s theology, the author underlines that genuine hope encourages people to open themselves to God and the other(s).

Abstract

Lévinas’ notion of responsibility has two characters: concrete and asymmetric. These two characters of responsibility can be capitalized to foster hope in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic that is currently sweeping the world. An encounter with others, especially with those who are suffering from Covid-19, is not merely a physical encounter. This encounter gives birth to responsibility and realization that those who suffer are not “the others.” This awareness eliminates the desire to treat others as objects that can be used to fulfill their own needs. On the other hand, this awareness of responsibility breeds hope for those who suffer that they are not alone. In order to foster hope in those who suffer, the actions and responsibilities taken always have an asymmetric character.

Abstract

Sorrows are universal human experiences hitting all human beings with different intensity. The article provides two concrete examples of sorrows, the first due to Covid-19 disaster and the latter due to stabbing case in Sigi, as an entrance to reflect philosophically on the essence of human hope. The opposite and the enemy of the human hope are despair and death. Genuine human hope should be constituted and realized in the midst of sorrowful experiences to cope with human despair and death. The last part of the article offers the way of realizing genuine human hope for the victims of calamities caused by natural disasters, diseases, or human malice. Love and compassion are the best response for the realization of the genuine human hope.

Abstract

Hope is an important theme to reflect on, especially at the time of covid-19 pandemic. This study explores Ernst Bloch’s philosophy of hope. I utilize critical analysis method to investigate Bloch’s work, The Principle of Hope, which then is supported by other secondary resources concentrated on Bloch’ thoughts. I organize this study into several sections. After giving a short introduction, I illustrate his short biography that shaped the development of his thoughts. In the following section, I systematically explore his basic ideas on hope, and then try to synthesize his thoughts under title “Social and Political Dimension of Hope.” At the end I exhibit the implication and contribution of Bloch’s ideas to our situation today. The point that I found in this study is that hope is rooted in human drives for self-preservation, and carries social and political dimensions. Since this is only preliminary study, I found some difficulties in finding Indonesian terms to articulate Bloch’s thoughts.
