Abstract

Many islamic education institutions have emerged since the times of Prophet Muhammad. From historical perspective of classical Islam, the period of Abbasiate (750-1258) was the peak periode of their development. Applying sacifact analysis, this article is aimed at uncovering multi historical aspects of the institutions development. George Makdisi and Ahmad Syalabî have classified the development into two periods, pre-madrasah and post-madrasah. The former was considered as a milestone in the history of islamic education. The transformation proccess from masjid to madrasah went through three phases of transformation, i.e. phase of masjid, phase of masjid khân, and phase of madrasah. In addition, there were three factors accelerating the transformation process. Firstly, the educational activities in masjid were considered overlap their main function as worship building. Secondly, the need for science and knowledge emerged rapidly. And thirdly, there was new orientation in managing good education for muslim society.

Abstract

Muslim must actualize values in the Qur’an in their life. So, the term Qur’anic actualization means total actions and comprehensive works colored by Qur’anic spirits either in their aims, strategies or implementation. This will lead Muslims to be khayra ummah (the best ummah). Allah entrusts them to be the one only heir of this world. Nowadays, Muslims have failed to be the world heir. We have failed to be masters of qawliyah verses written in the Al-Qur’an and of kawniyah verses manifested in this wide world. Many factors are considered causes of the failure. The prime factor is education. Education developed in Muslim communities has not totally referred to Qur’anic frameworks. Illiteracy, meaninglessness, paradigm confusion and disorientation still paint implementation of Islamic education. Muslims will revive to be the best ummah if only Islamic education, both its theories and praxes, is constructed by basing on Qur’anic vision and mission.

Abstract

This article elaborates modern phenomena that come into human’s life with their ambiguous face. On one hand, modernity gives human material and biological satisfaction resulted from advances in science and technology. On the other hand, it leads people to the meaningless life, existentially and spiritually. In the post-modern era, Islamic education is aimed to give alternative solutions which can change human life paradigm from material orientation into spiritual orientation because the Islamic education value can be seen from its contents including maintenance of human life development in all aspects, materially, spiritually, intellectually, socially and experimentally. This article emphasizes that Islamic education does not only justify aqly and naqly knowledge development, but also synthesizes the two into one scientific paradigm.

Abstract

Innovation of education always becomes hot topic to be discussed from time to time because the fact shows that conventional learning methods are still used in educational institutions. Teachers are always viewed as experts who totally hold the power to transfer knowledge and give doctrines to students. The time has come to change this condition. Lesson study (LS) may be one of ways to shift such old paradigm. In that way, teachers should open their classes to be observed by anyone involved in learning process and activities. Therefore, teachers will know weaknesses and strengths of their methods. This article examines LS as an alternative model of improving professionalism of PAI teahers. The model can be aplied based on the principles of colleagues and mutual learning in order to establish a learning community through a gradual and cyclics steps.

Abstract

In this article, I study Islamic education developing in undulated ways from the classic to modern era, including in Indonesia. There is dynamics in two cases: institution and methodology. In term of institutional dynamics, Islamic educational institutions are established through three phases: mosques, Khan Mosques and madrasahs. In Indonesia, madrasahs are formed from teaching and learning in Muslim leaders’ (kiyais) houses, mosques, Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and then madrasahs. In term of methodological dynamics, Islamic education in madrasahs is started from lecture, memorization, and open discussion. In Indonesia, the developed methods are lecture given through sorogan, bandongan, and classical ways. Those institutional and methodological dynamics bring about madrasahs have special characteristics as particular Islamic educational institutions. As a result, excellent and model madrasahs have been established recently.

Abstract

One of the Islamic doctrines that becomes methodological base for Muslims in the implementation of Islam is ijtihad. This concept, however, is considered valid when it is applied in zhanni areas, not qath¢i ones and Islamic theology. In Islamic terminology, terms syari’ah and fiqh are interesting to be discussed and reformed. Transformative-contextual Islamic thinking reconstruction is greatly needed so that syari’ah exists and is able to become modern constitution. One of the Islamic thinkers who tries to actualize ijtihad as a scientific paradigm in Islamic law reform is Abdullah al-Na’im. He tries to reform Islamic law in facing Western law development, especially in public Islamic law. This writing is constructed to see Al-Naim’s intellectual setting and how he sets ijtihad as scientific paradigm in Islamic law. Hopefully, this writing will give perspectives in facing modern problems.

Abstract

One of the Islamic facets that attracts much attention and provokes debates among Muslim intellectuals is discourse of women’s position in classical Islamic doctrines: women’s position in private and public areas. Women are often seen as peripheral, second class citizen, marginal and victims of injustice constructed by society’s perceptions. Considering that, classic Muslim scholars are mainly blamed for women inequality because of their interpretation on Al-Qur’an and Hadis. Consequently, societies often view that women’s tasks are limited to domestic areas: kitchen, well, and bed. Therefore, Muslim thinkers should reinterpret Al-Qur’an and Hadis focusing on Islamic spirits that emphasize Islam as rahmat for all people, women and men, in all aspects of life.

Abstract

The 19th and 20th centuries were periods for main transformation in Muslim history: periods of degradation and conquest, independence and revolution, renaissance and reform. Toward the 19th century, world power moved from Muslim world to Europe. It was remarked by emerging power of British, France, Spain, Russia, Netherlands, Italy and Portuguese. They dominated Muslim societies in Asia, Africa, and Middle East in economic, military, politic and ideological aspects. Muslim societies’ responses to Europe domination were diverse from rejection and confrontation to emigration and non-cooperative attitudes of traditional Muslim. They planned reform, reconstructed Islamic thinking and beliefs, reformed theology and Islamic law, and emphasized Muslim’s self-esteem significance, unity and solidarity in facing cultural threats and Europe colonialism. However, not few secular Muslims and reformers, were proud and greatly imitated Europe civilization and cultures. They did secularization that ended khalifah system in order to reconstruct Muslim societies.

Abstract

Al-Mâturîdî has expertise in various Islamic sciences. In the Qur’anic exegesis, he has Ta’wîlât Ahl al-Sunnah or Ta’wîlât al-Qur’ân. This paper is going to explain the methodology of al-Mâturîdî’s exegesis. He clearly favors to combine the naqlî and ‘aqlî sources. Therefore, it can be identified as tafsîr bi al-izdiwâj (the exegesis which amalgamates tafsîr bi al-ma’tsûr with tafsîr bi al-ra’y). He is not an excessive commentator in using grammatical analysis to interpret the Qur’anic verses. He sometimes presents many styles of qirâ’ah (recitation of the Qur’an) without thorough elucidation. He almost never takes Isrâ’îliyyât (the Judeo-Christian traditions and tales) to interpret the Qur’anic verses. He prefers tawassuth (nonaligned and independent standpoint) when dealing with many different viewpoints among the theologians. He tends to follow the Hanafite school of thought in discussing the jurisprudential Qur’anic verses. He usually uses asbâb al-nuzûl (the causes of revelation) slackly.

Abstract

Berkelamin wanita bukanlah ‘pilihan’ hamba-Nya.
