Abstract

Land cover information are needed to support decision making process on natural resource management. Remote sensing has been provideingr a huge distribution of geographical land cover information on various spatial scales. Landsat 8 OLI can be used on various applications and researches, including on land cover classification. Parameters used on land cover identification can be extracted from Landsat 8 OLI (Operational Land Imager). The research tried to explore land cover classification in Kuningan District by using two different classification methods, visual and digital maximum likelihood using Landsat 8 OLI acquired on August 5th2014. The main objectives of the research were to develop land cover map and assess the result accuracy on both different methods used. Confusion matrix using Overall accuracy and Kappa value was used as a reference on defining the accuracy. As a result, visual interpretation identified 10 land cover classes with Overall accuracy of 94.02% and Kappa value of 0.93. While digital maximum likelihood identified 10 land cover classes with Overall accuracy of 93.17% and Kappa value of 0.92.

Abstract

Chlorophyll has long been used as a green colorant for food and non-food applications. One source of chlorophyll is suji (Dracaena angustifolia (Medik.) Roxb.) leaf. The suji leaf chlorophyll has advantages and unique characteristics compared to the other chlorophyll sources that potential to be developed as a natural colorant. However, chlorophyll is easily degraded due to enzymatic and environmental factors. During processing and storage, the chlorophyll structure changes to its derivative compounds which are no longer green. Several attempts have been done to maintain the quality of the green color and quantity of chlorophyll contained in suji leaves. The formation of metallo-chlorophyll and development of suji leaf powder colorant have not been able to match the quality and quantity of its extract. These constraints become a challenge in the development of suji leaves as a natural colorant.

Abstract

A research was conducted to study the potential of solid oil palm waste as an antibrowning and as a repellent of Aedes aegypt. The amount of oil palm waste is increasing along with the expansion of oil palm plantation. A prevention method is needed to overcome solid, liquid, and gaseous wastes of oil palm which pollute the environment. Cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin contained in solid waste of oil palm can be anaerobically fermented naturally to produce garbage enzyme which can be used as an antibrowning and as a repellent of Aedes aegypt. Browning index and polyphenol level were tested with UV Vis spectrophotometry while repellent level was tested using Aedes aegypti mosquito and a formula applied to the skin. The result showed that the acidity level (pH) was between 3.54-3.15. The highest antibrowning properties were found in oil palm fiber (SKS) and palm oil cake (BKS) with a browning index value of 0.037 with a relative inhibition (antibrowning) of 78%. Meanwhile, the highest repellent properties toward Aedes aegypti was showed by the on palm empty fruit bunch (TKS) + oil palm fiber (SKS) with 79.76% effective rejection percentage. There fore, fermented oil palm waste has an antibrowning effect and a repellent Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Abstract

The duration of soil moisture greatly determine the sugarcane content. Until now the effect of soil moisture duration on the sucrose content have not been studied. The objective of this study was to evaluate the duration of soil moisture before harvest that determines the yield of various types of sugarcane maturity rates. The research was conducted at Village Karangploso Malang starting from July 2015-October 2016. A factorial experiment was arranged in Randomized Block Design with 3 replications. The first factor consisted of 9 duration of average of soil moisture (1.0 week; 0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0; 2.5; 3.0; 3.5; and 4.0 months) before harvesting. The second factor consisted of 4 varieties/clones (Bululawang, PS 06 199, Kenthung, and PS 881). The results showed that sugar cane plants required the duration of soil moisture in the range of 1.5-4.0 months before harvesting depending on the variety/clones. Bululawang variety (late maturity), PS 06 199 (middle to late maturity), Kenthung variety (early to middle maturity), and PS 881 varieties (early maturity) each required an average of 60,23% soil moisture during 3.0-3.5 months, 70.00% for 3.0 months, 81.40% for 2.5-4.0 months, and 86.25% for 2.0-3.5 months before harvesting to obtain the optimum sucrose content.

Abstract

Fish has two chemical sensory/receptor systems that smell (olfactory) and taste (gustatory) odor that adapt to the specific substance of the environment. In general, olfactory is similar to nasal organs for human nostrils. The olfactory receptors detect chemical stimuli in the form of electrical signals. Based on the ability of fish that can respond to chemical stimuli through the sense of smell, a substance can be used to attract the attention of fish. In response to this reality, AFA (Amino Acid Fish Aggregation) can be developed as a fish collecting tool to attract fish bu using amino acid preparation that works though the sense of smell and taste of fish. The objectives of this study were to design and produce a prototype of Amino Acid Fish Aggregation (AFA), to determine the productivity of catches of raft lift net by using AFA, and to calculate the length of the weight of the catch using AFA. The data used were catch data with weights and lengths of fish catch by raft lift net using AFA. The results showed that the AFA prototype which had a size of p x l x t : 35 x 22 x 15 cm and the highest catches was found at 18.00-00.00 WIB by using AFA with raft lift net. The catches using AFA in Palabuhanratu waters amounted to 5 types of fish, namely stolephorus sp., sardinella sp., rastrelliger kanagurta, euthynnus affinis, trichiurus sp., and positive allometrics were found in rastrelliger kanagurta and anchovy, but negative allometrics were found in euthynnus affinis, sardinella sp., and trichiurus sp.

Abstract

Most of Amorphophallus muelleri seeds for corm production derives from natural production in the forest. The objective of research was to evaluate seed quality and seedling growth from natural and gibberellin (GA3)-induced flowering, and different growing media in order to develop seed production technology. The experiments were conducted at Leuwikopo Experimental Farm of Bogor Agricultural University, Bogor, Indonesia from August 2016-April 2017. A. muelleri seeds from six culture practices were compared, i.e., mother corms with natural flowering were planted in soil media, soil+rice husk charcoal, and soil+cow manure, and mother corms induced flowering using GA3 (1.000, 1.500, and 2000 ppm) were planted in soil media. Results indicated that berry size, color, seed color and size and seed germination rate were independent of seed production method, i.e., non-induction, GA3 induction, and growing media. Germination rate was >90%, and no abnormal sprouting was found. The highest seedling establishment, represented by full-expand of first leaf, was obtained from seeds of soil+rice husk charcoal media. Seedling from seeds of soil+rice husk charcoal and soil+cow manure media had larger leaves than the other treatments. Present study implies that application of rice husk charcoal or manure in the seed production of A. muelleri is important to obtain high quality seedling.

Abstract

Continuous forest and land fires in Indonesia require multi-stakeholder concerns. Further, focal point should be on the grass root actors, since they are the closest to the fires, in term of location; the understand the most about the site situations, and could be the first responders to the fire events. Those actors, also could play a role as, either protagonists or antagonists, in the fire management program, depend on their situations. Based on the above narration, this research aimed to understand roles and challenges faced by those actors at the site level. This research was conducted in August-December 2017 in three villages, in Siak District, Riau is Village Penyengat, Sungai Rawa, and Rawa Mekar Jaya. The choice of location was based on comparable different fire frequencies occured among those three villages respectively the most, moderately, and the least frequent. The method utilized in this research was actor analysis. The data were collected from primary (interviews) and secondary sources (literatures). The analysis results showed that there were too many key players, influencing actors with negative roles, and actors with improper roles in the fire management activities. De-concentrating the influences of the Central Government and MoEF, as well as derivative legislations to legalize the roles of both the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasures (NADC-BNPB) and Army, to be involved in the fire management activities are also needed to solve the problems.

Abstract

Dextran is a long chain of carbohydrate polymers synthesized by dextransucrase enzyme with sucrose as a substrate. The physical, chemical conditions, temperature, and the concentration of sucrose in the isolate bacterial growth media play an important role in dextransucrase production. This study aims to isolate and characterize the dextransucrase producing bacteria. The bacteria were isolated from sugar cane. TBT 3.2 Isolate which had the highest viscosity (1.48 cP) and crude dextran (7.87 g/L) production was selected. TBT 3.2 Isolate was identified as Paenibacillus polymyxa with 99% similar identity. The Paenibacillus polymyxa TBT 3.2 was characterized based on their ability to produce dextran and cell number. The bacteria had the optimum growth conditions on the media for producing dextran at pH 7, temperature 30°C, and concentration of 20% sucrose. The highest dextransucrase activity and the highest specific activity were obtained after 25 minutes of incubation, with the activities of 29.41 mU/mL and 0.46 U/mg. Based on the results of this study, the Paenibacillus polymyxa TBT 3.2 can be used as a dextran producing bacteria.

Abstract

One of the factors that hinder the adoption of sustainable agriculture technology innovation is the farmers’ perception on the innovation, which is influenced by internal and external factors. One of them is the limited availabilities of infra structure and facilities to support sustainable agricultural production, which are external factors. This research was aimed to analyz the farmers’ perception on the government support in implementing sustainable agriculture system, to find out factors that are related to the farmers’ perception and to produce recommendations that support sustainable agriculture system to the government in the context of sustainable agriculture mainstreaming. This research was conducted in four different areas in Bogor municipality and regency, namely Cimahpar District, Situgede District, Benteng Village, and Purwasari Village. Survey method was used on 201 farmers selected purposively. The results showed that farmers’ perception was negative on government support in implementing sustainable agriculture system. Most of the farmers considered that government provided less support to the implementation of sustainable agriculture system (55.7%). Especially, in providing enough capital (65.7%), insurance on farmers’ business market (58.7%), insurance on the price of business production facilities (51.7%), and insurance on the market (sold with reasonable price) (50.2%). However, factors that were related to the farmers’ perception were formal education (rs = 0.150, P<0.05) and land area (rs = -0.154, P<0.05). Therefore, it is important for the government to provide the farmers’ needs, such as suficient capital, guarantee on market price of farm product, price guarantee for farming production facilities, and market continuity to support sustainable business activities for the continuity of the farmers’ business activity application.

Abstract

Soybean development to intercropping is one of the opportunities to increase soybean planting area. Each soybean variety has different responses to intercropping so it is required to study soybean varieties that are suitable or adaptive to intercropping environments. Therefore, a research was conducted to determine the response of soybean genotypes in intercropping with cassava. The research was conducted at the Jambegede Research Station, Malang in February to December 2018, in two environments, namely intercropping (L1) and monoculture (L2), with two planting times, namely three weeks (T1) and 4 months (T2) after cassava planting. Twelve promising lines and three varieties (Dena 1, Dena 2, and Grobogan) were used as research materials. A completely randomized block design with three replications was used to arrange the treatments in each environment. The results showed that the responses of each soybean genotype tested as intercrops on intercropping system with cassava were varied, depending on the soybean planting time. GH-5 and GH-6 soybean genotypes are suitable for the first intercrop (T1), while GH-3 are suitable as the second intercrops (T2) in intercropping system with cassava + Soybean, with higher stress tolerance index (STI) and lower weighted sensitivity index (WSI) than the other genotypes tested. Based on the land equivalent ratio (LER), intercropping of cassava with GH-5, GH-6, or GH-3 soybean genotypes was advantageous (RKL>1.0). Keywords: land equivalent ratio, stress tolerance index, weighted sensitivity index
