Abstract

The mangrove ecosystems on the coast of Sayung Sub-District provide huge benefits to the community. However, this region experienced a very severe coastal erosion during the last few decades. Also, information about mangrove ecosystem services is still very limited in this region. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to map the balance of mangrove ecosystem services on the coast of Sayung Sub-District, Demak District. Data were collected from three coastal villages, namely Bedono, Timbulsloko, and Surodadi, through in-depth interviews, questionnaires, and field observations. The data analysis was carried out using the Burkhard model approach, which involved an ecosystem service matrix, made up of a matrix of capacity, demand, and availability. The results showed that in all components of provisioning service, there was a surplus of availability. In regulating services, there were low surpluses in the components of carbon sequestration and water bioremediation services, while low deficits were found in the service components of reduce wave and current damage, and protecting from sea water intrusion. Then, in cultural services, the two components, shelter for rest area and recreation, experienced a surplus of availability. Mangrove rehabilitation needs to be continued to increase mangrove cover, given the availability of regulating services on components related to erosion prevention in the balace sheet tends to be deficit. Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the physiological response of acute heat stress in Kampung Unggul Balitbangtan (KUB) and Walik chickens with four different HSP70 gene haplotypes (H1', H1, H2, and H3). Acute heat stress is carried out at 35°C for one hour. The data was analyzed based on rectal temperature measurements, distribution of body surface temperature (head, neck, body, and leg area), hormone levels (corticosterone and triiodothyronine), and time of panting. Body surface temperature is detected using infrared thermography. The results showed that haplotype H1 Walik chicken is more susceptible to heat stress based on the rectal temperature. In contrast, H1' haplotype Walik chicken released more heat through the body surface in the leg area. Keywords: heat stress, hormone, KUB chicken, infrared thermography, walik chicken

Abstract

The source of iron in waters can come from human activities that carry out activities such as waste disposal in household and industrial activities. Green mussels containing iron are very dangerous for the shells themselves and for human health if consumed in excess. This study aims to analyze the concentration of iron in green mussel meat, determine the safe limit of green mussel meat for consumption by humans, and calculate the value of bioconcentration factors. This research was conducted in the sea of Tanjung Mas, Semarang. Samples taken in the form of green mussels, sediments, and water were then analyzed for iron concentrations with Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The results of the study showed that the range of iron concentration values in green mussels from July to November was 39–283,97 mg/kg. The range of MTI values for adults was 1.18–4.92, while for children the range was 0.24–0.98. The value of the bioconcentration factor of green mussels and water was 3271–24839, while the value of the bioconcentration factor of green mussels and sediments was 0.010–9.647. Abstract

Spodoptera litura F. larvae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) are polyphagous insects that cause damages to many types of plantations and horticulture that need to be protected. One of environmentally friendly method to protect ecological balance is the use of botanical insecticides whose bioactive compounds come from plant extracts. This study used a mixture of two plant extracts from A. squamosa leaves extract and C. domestica rhizome exstract (the mixed of experimental extracts). The mixed of experimental extracts are synergistic so that they are more effective and need a lower concentration to cause the mortality of S. litura larvae than the use of a single extract. The aims of the research were to know the efficacy of the mixed of experimental extracts on the mortality of S. litura larvae and determine the value of LC50 and LC90 extract test on its mortality. The initial and efficacy test were conducted by bait dip into the mixed of experimental extracts. The mortality data were analyzed using ANAVA, then continued by Duncan test and Probit analysis. The results of this research showed that the mixed of experimental extracts were effective to kill S. litura larvae. The calculated result of LC50 and LC90 showed that the LC50 value of the experimental extracts on the second and the third instar larvae were 5.252 ppm and 10.559 ppm, respectively, and the LC90 value for both instar larvae were 11.124 ppm and 13.638 ppm, respectively. It could be concluded that the mixed of experimental extracts is effective in S. litura larvae mortality and more effective in the mortality of the second instar larvae than that of the third instar larvae. Therefore, this test extract mixture can be developed further in a greenhouse to evaluate the effectiveness in the mortality of S. litura larvae which can be used as an alternative to controlling S. litura larvae with an environmentally friendly material in farmers. Abstract

Moringa oleifera is a plant that has many benefits in each part. Moringa seeds have high nutrient content but they have not been used as food ingredients because it contains cyanigenic glycoside and a bitter taste. This study aims to obtain the best method in eliminating the bitter taste and cyanide of moringa seeds, analyzing its proximate nutritional levels and antioxidant capacity, and the level of acceptance when it’s applied to cookie products. This study used different types of soaking solution (water, 3.5% NaCl, 1N CH3COOH solution, and 0.5% NaHCO3) and boiling temperature (70°C, boiling water temperature (± 97°C), and pressure boiling (±115°C)). Flour with NaHCO3 immersion treatment continued by pressurized boiling for 35 minutes was chosen to be the best flour because it had the lowest cyanide content, reduced bitter taste, and the highest FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power) values (33.40±1.22 mg/kg; 3.40±1.24 mg/kg; and 58.70±2.67 mg AEAC/g) compared with untreated moringa seed flour (152.15±0.95 mg/kg ;10.29±2.92 mg/kg; and 17.43±1.22 mg AEAC/g). The selected flour was used as a substitute for flour (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%) in cookies making. Sensory hedonic rating analysis on cookies used 60 untrained panelists. Substitution up to 30% overall did not have a significant difference in acceptance compared to control (0%) except for color attribute. Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze machining performance (characteristic and quality), as well as bonding quality of densified wood, and then compared to those of un-treated (control) wood and boron-treated wood. Characteristic and quality of machining properties were directly evaluated by qualified technician during processing, while bonding quality was evaluated through its shear strength. The results showed that densification employed was able to improve machining performance and bonding quality of the 5-year-old faster-grown teakwood. Compared to control wood and boron-treated wood, machining performances of densified teakwood are greater, while bonding quality increased by 18.79 and 26.86%, respectively. The surface became much fine and even, and has similar colour to older teakwood. Analysis hierarchy process (AHP) proves that densified teakwood is the best raw material for furniture manufacturing since its machining performances, appearance, colour, and bonding quality are better either than control wood or boron-treated wood. Abstract

This study assesses the short-term effects of selective cutting on the diversity of ground ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in the secondary rainforest. Ground ants were collected using a pitfall trap in a circular sample plot of 0.5 ha. A total of nine sample plots were randomly placed in a 98-ha cutting compartment. Fifteen pitfall traps were planted in each circular plot. A total of 135 pitfall traps were established in the cutting compartment. The average cutting intensity of 8 trees/haas applied in the cutting compartment. Insect sampling and measurement of environmental factors were carried before cutting and two days after cutting. In this study, the abundance, diversity, species richness, and evenness index of ground ants before cutting compared to after cutting. The results of this study indicated that the short-term impact of selective cutting on ground ants was varied. Selective cutting may increase or decrease the abundance and morphospecies composition of ground ants. The abundance of forager and ground-dwelling omnivores increased after selective cutting, whereas for the predator, scavenger, and seed disperser ants were decreased after selective cutting. Keywords: biodiversity, forest conservation, ground ant, selective cutting

Abstract

The upland rice-based cropping pattern is a form of double cropping or crop rotation in which upland rice as a basic commodity (base crop) which can be preceded or alternated with other food crops as a secondary crop. This study was conducted on dry land agro-ecosystems in the Tanimbar Islands Regency (West Southeast Maluku), from March to December 2017. This study was an adaptive research with a field experiment approach in farmer's land. The objective of this research was to obtain the most profitable cropping patterns, efficiency in land use and economically also has the highest net profit so it is appropriate to be recommended as a technology innovation for upland rice-based cropping patterns in dry land. The results showed that upland rice which was cultivated in multiple ways through intercropping or overlapped cropping, namely Introduced Cropping Pattern 1 (Upland Rice + Maize-Peanuts) and Introduced Cropping Pattern 2 (Upland Rice + Corn/Cassava-Green Beans-Peanuts) can increase land productivity (index planting of 222% and 288%, respectively) and farmers' income increased by 244-588% compared to upland rice grown in monoculture. Multiple cropping patterns can be recommended as a technology package for upland rice-based cropping patterns on dry land because of its efficiency in the use of production costs and land use. Furthermore, it gave the highest farm income of IDR63,933,100,-/ha/year with a net profit of IDR45,716,380,-/ha/year or IDR15,238,793,-/ha/ cropping season.
