Abstract

Goodness is the basis and goal of all moral actions. Therefore, ethics, be it theological or philosophical, must in some way explain specifically what goodness is and where one can find it. The Christian faith answers this by stating its fundamental belief that God is good. It says that the Christian belief in goodness is based on faith in God, placing each Christian at the heart of the relationship between faith and moral action. After confirming this fundamental Christian belief that God is the centre of all values, in this paper, we will draw out some implications of the relationship between faith as a personal and communal experience of God and the development of an attitude of religious moderation in a pluralistic Indonesian society. Thus, cultivating an attitude of religious moderation does not stop as an external rule but should go further as an ethical imperative for every Christian.

Abstract

This paper explores the experience of grace in the interreligious dialogue activists. The involvement of Catholic activists in this movement can be a locus for the experience of grace. Several theologians have recently discussed grace in a historical dimension. One of the theologians of the Second Vatican Council, Karl Rahner, had the idea of the experience of grace. Martin Heidegger's phenomenological hermeneutic method explores the experience of the grace of Catholic activists. In-depth interviews were used as a data collection technique. The research subjects were two Catholics, the National Meeting of Indonesian Youth from the Youth Commission of the Indonesian Bishops' Conference and one Catholic Young Interfaith Peacemaker Community. The results' novelty shows that the research subjects did not recognize grace as an extraordinary phenomenon. Inspired by the Church's teachings, they understand that grace is experienced as a process of living life's roles, unique abilities, and gifts to become better. The study’s conclusion confirms that grace can be identified in everyday life and is not limited to a superstructure metaphysical idea.
An Essay on Divine Eternity and Divine Presence Dominikus Sukristiono

Abstract

The belief that an eternal-atemporal God is present to temporal beings is at the heart of Christian doctrine. The problem with such belief is that there seems to be a metaphysical barrier between them. Therefore, the doctrine of divine timelessness is incompatible with divine presence. This essay will show that such a contention is false, given that His awareness of the temporal beings will be sufficient to account for His presence. Furthermore, this is also consistent with the view about the existence of deep interaction between God and human beings and of human free will. This philosophical analysis is pertinent to the proper understanding of the doctrine of divine eternity and divine presence. It also has a significant bearing on the provision for the basis of a meaningful conversation with other theological traditions, such as those living in Indonesia.

Abstract

Death is a certainty that humans cannot avoid. Everyone will face this event without exception. The difference lies in respecting the corpse before it is buried or cremated. Each region has its peculiarities in building a death ceremony. Culture plays a significant role in shaping the death ceremony based on local wisdom. These rites lead to the same goal: placing death as a noble act. This study aims to preserve and explore cultural wealth that is becoming extinct according to the times. These methods show that humans have a high value and dignity compared to other creations, even though they have died. This value is maintained through various very noble awards. Javanese and Sundanese have similarities in respecting the bodies to be buried. The ritual of sawer or sawur is a value that distinguishes it from other cultures. Local wisdom is still maintained, even though modernity has begun to erode it.

Abstract

Faith is often accused of being irrational and considered lower than reason because it is not objective and universal. In other words, at a practical level, believers cannot always obey God’s commands communicated in their inwardness. However, they must always be subject to the demands of a universal and objective reason. This elaboration attempts to counter this assumption departing from the description that Kierkegaard presented in his work, Fear and Trembling. There, Kierkegaard states that a single individual believer is higher than the ethical-rational demands that bind him. In other words, the purpose of this text is to show that faith has its rationality and is not subject to reason. Therefore, through the textual analysis method of Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling, this paper would like to analyze the constitutive elements of faith, how they work, and why faith is not subject to ratio. The point of view used in this elaboration is Kierkegaardian subjectivity. The analysis finds that the constitutive elements of faith are anxiety, courage, passion, the strength of the absurd, and hope (as components of faith), which need to be carried out with a double movement of faith.

Abstract

In danger of death (periculum mortis), the canonical rules laid down under “normal conditions” concerning the reception and service of the Sacraments are often impossible to adhere to. One of the fundamental problems in pastoral life is a lack of juridical knowledge of the “graces, dispensations, exceptions” in canon law in situations of the danger of death, which can be detrimental to the spiritual rights of the faithful. It is, therefore, essential to examine both normatively and pastorally. Canon law seriously takes the danger of death as a matter of its positive norms. The “exegesis method” of canon law will be used in the canon on periculum mortis, especially book IV of CIC 1983. In conclusion, it is evident that in the face of the danger of death for every physical person in the Church, the principle: salus animarum suprema lex is the only norm that must be observed.

Abstract

This paper aims to show the limitations of the liberal viewpoint vis-à-vis overcoming the conflict between freedom of religion and belief in Indonesia. The multi-ethnic and multi-religious condition, a unique feature of Indonesian society, demonstrates that the conventional liberal framework of the concept of freedom of religion and belief is insufficient. To complete this article, the writer employs the literature research method. This research can formulate many findings: freedom of religion and belief is not only concerned with the individual. And an individual right to choose his/her faith is strongly linked to how one legitimately expresses oneself in communities based on ethnicity and/or religion. Furthermore, plurality in a multicultural society presumes acknowledging a fundamental truth that can be expressed in many ways.

Abstract

This research seeks a permanent juridical solution for the pastoral problem of catholic split marriages. Many such couples need the Catholic Church's intervention to give way out of their family problem. And there is indeed a solution provided by Pope Francis with the reform of Canon Law regarding the issue of divorce and remarried couples of Catholic families. The research method is identifying and documenting what has been done in the diocese of Manado by Fr. Jan van Paassen and studying his approach to dealing with families needing help. Bibliographical research indicates the method of Fr. Jan van Paassen in dealing with the problem. It has a solid foundation and a reasonable argumentation which may be accepted by the authority of the Church based on the Calon Law itself. May this research help solve the pastoral problem of the catholic split marriage on the one hand. On the other side, the indissolubility of marriage remains the permanent teaching of the Catholic Church.
Thinking Prevents Grave Evil: An Analysis of Thinking According to Hannah Arendt Shelomita Selamat; Yustinus Yustinus

Abstract

Hannah Arendt identifies that, in most cases, human evil is banal. People who committed grave evil did not think profoundly about what they were doing, and it did not come from what we consider their “optio Fundamentalis”. This study endeavours to critically explore Hannah Arendt’s account of “Thinking” as a fundamental capacity of human existence. This study aims to investigate Hannah Arendt’s thoughts on Thinking and its relation to other human capacities and actions. We will utilize a critical analysis of Arendt’s works as the method of this study. We will critically analyze her important works, such as Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil, The Life of the Mind, and Essays in Understanding: 1930-1954, while her other works will also be considered. After this study, we find that the activity of Thinking is an essential capacity of the human being as a moral being. Only if human beings think profoundly, he/she can they produce meaningful actions that can hinder them from banal actions, which could even lead them to commit grave evils. The moral capacity of human beings remains in their act of Thinking. The need for exercising the activity of profound Thinking is, therefore, implied.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the contextual mission construction using the concept of Jubata to introducing the concept of the Trinity in a biblical view to Dayak Tanayatn people This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to identify how the Kanayatn Dayak understand the Jubata figure. The results show that through the adaptative method and using the seven Jubata names in the Kanayatn Dayak language to understanding the concept of the Triune God in biblical view and change the understanding of the survivors' sacrifices to be understood as worldly salvation, not eternal in nature through the image of Jubata (which is equated with the spirit of the ancestors) but is directed to one of God's persons in the Trinity of God the Son (Jesus Christ) as the Savior of mankind. Thus, the contextual mission construction of the Jubata concept in the introduction of the Gospel of the Triune God can be a reference material for carrying out outreach missions to remote tribes and building contextual mission studies that are culturally appropriate to spread the Gospel among  the Kanayatn Dayak tribe in Landak, West Kalimantan.
