Abstract

Disasters can have catastrophic effects on communities, particularly when residents are inadequately prepared to recognise hazards and respond effectively. Within the penta-helix framework, communities are key stakeholders in disaster preparedness. Community participation can be strengthened through community disaster-preparedness volunteers, locally referred to as cadres, who represent local needs and support preparedness and response activities. Capacity-building for these volunteers should include hazard recognition, self-rescue, first aid, and victim evacuation. This community engagement programme aimed to strengthen the capacity of disaster-preparedness groups to recognise hazards, perform self-rescue, provide emergency first aid, and evacuate victims. The pre- and post-training knowledge assessment showed a marked shift: responses classified as poor decreased from 80.0% to 17.3%, whereas responses classified as good increased from 20.0% to 82.7%. Effective disaster management requires well-trained community personnel and strong intersectoral coordination and communication through community-based networks. Continuous and recurrent training should therefore be incorporated into routine supervision and development, with subsequent programmes addressing more advanced and diverse competencies.

Abstract

Stingless-bee honey has economic potential for forest-based communities, but small producer groups often face connected constraints in quality control, production, branding, business administration, and market access. This community service program strengthened the competitiveness of the galo-galo honey enterprise managed by the Sungai Gariang Forest Farmer Group (KTH) in Lubuk Minturun, West Sumatra. Conducted from May to December 2025, the program used participatory problem identification, technical training, field mentoring, and end-line evaluation. Outcomes were assessed through observation, practical demonstrations, production and sales records, activity documentation, and before-and-after descriptive comparison. The intervention provided a moisture meter, 10 stingless-bee colonies, a digital scale and power support, three bottle formats, branding and product-diversification assistance, simple financial recording, and digital marketing training. The moisture meter enabled an initial measurable assessment of approximately 30%, demonstrating that moisture reduction remained necessary. Production increased from 10 kg to 12 kg per harvest, or 20%, while recorded sales rose by approximately 20–25% during the first three months after digital promotion began. The group adopted the Lomin brand, activated TikTok and Shopee, and obtained halal certification and a PIRT permit. The findings show that sequencing technical, managerial, institutional, and marketing interventions can strengthen enterprise capacity, although moisture-reduction technology and longer-term market monitoring remain necessary.

Abstract

This community service assistance program aimed to accelerate the institutional transformation of SMKS YAPENTOP Toboali, South Bangka Regency, following its official designation as a Vocational High School Center of Excellence (SMK-PK). SMKS YAPENTOP Toboali faced several critical management barriers, specifically a misalignment between its school vision and annual action roadmaps, lack of technical standard operating procedures in its teaching factory units, and insufficient data mapping for industrial teacher internship programs. To resolve these problems, Universitas Andalas executed a structured university-led mentoring program spanning six months. This article specifically discusses the outcomes of the third and fourth mentoring phases conducted between September and November 2021. The methods used included Participatory Action Research (PAR) combined with collaborative strategic workshops. The main interventions consisted of direct site infrastructure reviews, strategic roadmap synchronization, and mapping of local industrial partners (DUDIKA). The results showed that the program established a structured institutional roadmap, updated the school's vision to match industrial competencies, and provided management guidelines for the campus teaching factory. These outputs provide an institutional foundation for strengthening vocational school governance and continued curriculum-industry alignment.

Abstract

Appropriate complementary feeding (CF) is essential for promoting optimal child growth and development while preventing malnutrition, stunting, and other long-term health problems. However, mothers often encounter challenges in providing appropriate complementary foods, partly due to limited access to accurate nutrition information. Community health volunteers (cadres) play a strategic role in delivering health education to families. This community engagement program aimed to strengthen the capacity of community health volunteers as behaviour change agents through an integrated intervention consisting of cadre training, complementary feeding education, cooking demonstrations, and household mentoring. Eight cadres from Korong Gadang Integrated Health Posts, Kuranji Health Center, Padang, participated in a structured training program consisting of lectures, focus group discussions, and cooking demonstrations on complementary feeding. Cadres' knowledge was assessed before and after the training using a 10-item questionnaire. Following the training, cadres provided health education to mothers in their respective communities. The findings indicate that the training effectively improved cadres' knowledge and strengthened their capacity to provide complementary feeding education. In addition, education delivered by trained cadres contributed to improved maternal knowledge regarding optimal complementary feeding practices. This community engagement program demonstrated that strengthening community health volunteers through behaviour change intervention improved cadres’ knowledge and enhanced their capacity to provide complementary feeding education. Furthermore, cadre-led education contributed to improved maternal knowledge regarding optimal complementary feeding practices. Empowering community health volunteers represents a feasible community-based strategy to increase access to evidence-based complementary feeding information.

Abstract

Chronic diseases require continuous community-based support that addresses patients’ biological, psychological, social, spiritual, and cultural needs. However, health cadres may have limited capacity to provide comprehensive assistance beyond physical health monitoring. This community service program aimed to strengthen health cadres’ capacity to apply a Holistic Care approach in supporting patients with chronic diseases and their families in Keramat Village, Martapura, South Kalimantan. The program involved 10 health cadres and 24 patients with chronic diseases and their families and was implemented through community empowerment, Holistic Care education, interactive training, case simulation, pocketbook-based guidance, digital documentation, and one-month home-based mentoring. Cadres’ knowledge was evaluated using a one-group pre-test–post-test design and analyzed descriptively. All cadres demonstrated increased post-test scores, with pre-test scores ranging from 35-80 and post-test scores from 75-100. Individual score increases ranged from 5 to 40 points, with a mean absolute increase of 21.2 points. The evaluation demonstrated an increase in health cadres’ knowledge following the program. However, the program did not assess cadres’ practical competency or patients’ quality of life using validated measures. The program supports continued cadre training, supervision, referral mechanisms, and direct evaluation of patient outcomes in future implementation.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to strengthen community energy resilience in Batu Busuk, Limau Manis, Pauh District, Padang City, West Sumatra, an area vulnerable to flash floods and electricity disruptions. The program was implemented in partnership with the Palito Nyalo Minangkabau Traditional Arts and Cultural Community and involved 23 participants in total, comprising the Universitas Andalas implementation team and members of the partner community. Conducted in a two-hour session, the program introduced a 2400 VAh portable Solar PV Power Station as an alternative electricity source for essential community activities during grid outages. The technology, adapted from a Universitas Andalas research output, integrates solar charging, lithium battery storage, a pure sine-wave inverter, AC 220 V and DC outputs, and a monitoring system. Activities consisted of socialization, technical presentations, practical guidance, technology demonstration, and technology handover. The demonstration covered system operation, charging, monitoring, and safe utilization of AC/DC outputs. The activity provided participants with practical exposure and an initial understanding of the use and management of solar-based backup energy for social, cultural, communication, and emergency activities. However, the evaluation was primarily qualitative and did not include systematic pre-test and post-test measurements or long-term monitoring of system performance. Continued mentoring, quantitative evaluation, and utilization monitoring are therefore recommended to support sustainable technology adoption. The program demonstrates a practical pathway for translating university research into community-based renewable-energy solutions for post-disaster resilience.
