Abstract

The subject of authentic leadership continues to be largely unexplored, especially in the teacher education institutions, despite the reports of entrenched corruption, wastage of resources by leaders, and negative subordinate behaviours. This study aims to analyse how authentic leadership can promote ethical practices in primary teacher education in Kenya. Within the realm of phenomenological research design, semi-structured interviews were utilized as the data collection instrument. The respondents were 35 leaders from public primary teacher training colleges (TTCs) and regional education officers. The qualitative data of the interviews was analysed using thematic analysis. The findings indicated that authentic leadership generates trusted role models who have the capacity to promote ethical practices within primary TTCs. Finally, the study proposed a philosophical paradigm of authentic leadership based on moral rightness and moral goodness to influence the mind-set of individuals within TTCs to internalize ethical practices as a routine lifestyle

Abstract

Vote-buying and other forms of electoral inducements are common phenomenon in Nigerian politics. This is so because the average voter is not only poor but also illiterate and unable to resist the alluring effects of uncontrolled electoral gratifications that come in cash or kind or both. Vote-buying is inherently a derivation of election fraud. Vote buying is the root cause of bad governance and a facilitator of the imposition of the incorrect and incompetent group of individuals to fill positions in governance. This study examines the menace of vote buying in Nigeria electoral system with focus on the issues, possible causes and solution within a defined period. The study revealed that the ripple effects of vote-buying which sterns from bad governance includes the insecurity of lives and properties, wide spread corruption and general lack of accountability by the ruling elite. It further revealed that the menace breeds incompetent leadership, and incompetence breeds illiteracy, unemployment, and poverty. The paper suggests among other things that the deployment of modern technologies to enable prospective voters vote from their homes using their phones would be the game changer for future elections in Nigeria

Abstract

This article - the last of a two-part assessment of leadership practices in community development processes, noted that since Nigeria’s independence 6 decades ago, only the past 2 decades has experienced uninterrupted democracy. Considering the importance of ideal democratic processes in actualizing progressive community development, the paper examined participation in politics, relative to leadership among geese to justify the need for nature-based alternative leadership practices in egalitarian developing communities. Analysis of empirical evidences from literature was used to evaluate key leadership issues, discuss political situations, and models of citizens’ participation across Edo State communities in Nigeria. Observed democratic leadership in the study area turned out as “practices that are alien to democracy” because it lacked the basic tenets of democracy. Several indices of participation in politics were articulated and matched against practices among the geese towards articulating a Biomimetic-based Democratic Leadership Practices for community progression. Recommendations were made and implication drawn.

Abstract

This paper aimed to determine the accounting lecturers’ teaching practices at a South African university. Teaching practices are a complex set of ways that lecturers use for instruction. When compromisingly crafted/implemented, they impact on success. In accounting education, teaching practices were found cognitively driven to determine success. Cognitivism learning theory guided the study. It emphasises mental processes, thinking, solving complex problems, and focusing on tasks requiring increased information processing, and procedural rules. The related elements enhance accounting teaching practices. This paper used a qualitative exploratory research methodology, enabling the researcher’s engagement with participants in their natural settings. Participants were purposefully selected for this study. Data was generated through individual semi-structured interviews to determine accounting lecturers’ practices. Issues including participants’ teaching practices and challenges experienced were explored. Data was thematically analysed. Findings suggest that current accounting teaching practices are detriment to performance. Hence this paper suggests that teaching practices require intervention

Abstract

This study examined the Nigeria police force and the challenge of combating internal insecurity in Nigeria. The Broken Windows Theory (BWT) was employed as the theoretical framework to guide the study. This theoretical paper draws its arguments primarily from secondary sources of data, such as existing legal frameworks and other associated policies, journal publications and textbooks. The study concluded that peace, security and safety are necessary and indispensable requirement for development and attainment of quality livelihood in society. Nigeria has recently experienced uncommon crises and feeling unsafe, each of which has resulted in the loss of lives and the destruction of property. This study recommended that State governments should be allowed by law to establish local police authority and recruits from within their communities, as opposed to posting officers and men from diverse geographical and cultural backgrounds across the country. This will go a long way toward addressing the state's unique security challenges.

Abstract

Performance management has been practiced in the South African local government sector since the dawn of democracy in 1994. Municipalities have the autonomy to design and implement a performance management system (PMS) that is aligned with the municipal context. The current challenge in South African local government is that there is a lack of information on the effectiveness of performance management implementation at local government. The aim of this article was to provide a synthesis of the latest findings in the performance management literature in South Africa by highlighting themes. The methodology used is qualitative and relies on reviewing literature in the Google Scholar database between 2018 and 2023. This study finds that municipalities struggle with multiple challenges but there is a positive shift occurring in performance management related to a culture of compliance, the building of institutions and the relationship between the political and administrative arms of government.

Abstract

This paper spotlights the rising concern of youths exhibiting violent behaviour. The scope is on cultivation and social learning theories linked to and rationalizing media content as catalysts of violent behaviour among the youths. With the aid of primary data sources for analysis, 180 questionnaires were printed and distributed to senior school students in Abraka metropolis. 178 filled questionnaires came back but 2 were incomplete so were discarded. 176 were used. Cultivation theory was identified as a theory that incites learning and practicing what a person sees on television while the social learning theory points out observation, imitation, and modeling as ways of learning. Empirical studies were also reviewed to establish other researchers’ views and their findings were scrutinized in line with this paper on how media content encourages copycatting into real life. The researchers made some recommendations to the government, media houses, and institutions of learning but, specifically to the youths to be more responsible and selective of the content they expose themselves to and consume or to be ready to face immediate and severe punishment if found guilty of violent behaviour

Abstract

This study aimed to examine and analyze the experiences and acceptance levels of students at the Philippine Science High School - Ilocos Region Campus (PSHS-IRC) in using the Pisay Knowledge Hub (KHub) as a Learning Management System (LMS) during the academic year 2020-2021. A mixed-method research approach was utilized. The Likert scale interpretation was employed to understand the level of acceptance, and the Technology Acceptance Model was implemented to comprehend the students' experiences. Based on the gathered data, the study revealed that students generally accepted and agreed with the use of KHub as a LMS, as evidenced by the following aspects: satisfaction (x=3.67), usefulness (x=3.77), and ease of use (x=3.73). The study also identified four themes that shaped the students' experiences in using KHub: strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and recommendations. Strengths refer to the positive experiences that students liked about using the LMS. In contrast, weaknesses explain the unfavorable experiences. Regarding the theme of challenges, it encompasses the technical issues and features of the LMS that posed problems when used. Lastly, the recommendations’ theme relates to the students' suggestions for improvement. Considering these findings, the following recommendations are made conduct further investigation and analysis of teachers' experiences in using LMSKHub, address the challenges experienced by students in using instructional technology, maintain and continue the use of KHub as a Learning Management System in teaching and learning, and provide intensive training on it.

Abstract

The recent study aims at investigating the interrelation of discourse structures and hidden ideological structures behind the use of certain words in a language through Critical Discourse Analysis in Donald Trump's speech of regarding Jerusalem as Israel's capital at December 6, 2017 on Wednesday. In this venue, the study unmasks the inserted, hidden ideologies and deposits the most real intensions and ideas behind the utterances delivered. Thus, use of some specific words is not generally unbiased, but it has a positive or negative colour on them. The effort made is to find out the truth hidden behind Trump's speech on the major and general issue of announcing Jerusalem as Israel's capital and some chunks about their relation with other world countries. Doubtlessly, the recognition of Jerusalem as an Israel's capital and the move of the U.S embassy are regarded as one of the most sensitive issues in the world especially the Middle East then. Here, the research analyzes and uncovers the experiential, relational and expressive values of the wording, rewording, overwording along with the grammatical structures and the functional values they add to the utterance.

Abstract

The contextualization of the Christian faith is indispensable to the planting, development and survival of the Christian religion in any given environment. In the African context, attempts to contextualize Christianity have led to the formulation of African Functional Christologies aimed at making Christianity more meaningful to the African audience. One of such Christologies is Ancestor Christology which designates Christ as Ancestor, superior to all African ancestors. Though very appealing to the African audience, Ancestor Christology has serious pitfalls which challenge its legitimacy as an authentic Christian Christological model. Different scholars have critiqued Ancestor Christology from different African cultural perspectives and have expressed concerns about its overall contribution to the orthodoxy of African Christian theology. Renewed interest in the subject in recent times has prompted this paper which appraises the ancestor-Christological model from an Akan Christian perspective. The paper is a literature-based research that gathered data from such scholarly sources as books, journal articles, and dissertation/theses. After analyzing the Akan concept of ancestorship, the paper then surveys the works of selected Ancestor Christologians to give an overview of the doctrine in question. Ancestor Christology is, then, evaluated through an Akan Christian lens, noting its strengths and weaknesses. The paper found that even though Ancestor Christology may facilitate the African Christian understanding of Christ’s care for the existential needs of the Akan/African, it has the tendency of encouraging ancestor worship, reducing Christ to a human being with no divine nature, and negating the resurrection, thereby nullifying the key foundations of the Christian faith. Yet, this does not necessarily mean the concept of Ancestor Christology should be rejected outright. African scholars may brainstorm to know how best this Christological model may be improved. The paper recommended, among others, that ontological and functional Christologies must always be treated together rather than in isolation
