Abstract

This article critically reassesses the historical-critical thesis of David S. Powers, an American historian of Islamic law at Cornell University, as presented in his influential monograph Studies in Qur'an and Hadith: The Formation of the Islamic Law of Inheritance (1986). Western scholarship on Qur'anic law has long been divided between studies of Muslim exegesis and independent Western reconstructions of Qur'anic themes; Powers' work belongs to the latter and has shaped subsequent debate on the historicity of Islamic inheritance law, yet critical engagement with it from Muslim academic circles, particularly in Indonesia, remains limited. This study addresses that gap through a qualitative library research design, using content analysis combined with a historical-critical approach to Powers' primary text and to recent scholarship on Qur'anic inheritance and Orientalist method. The analysis shows that Powers simultaneously revises two established positions: he rejects Joseph Schacht's thesis that Islamic law only crystallised around 725 CE, arguing instead that Qur'anic legislation on inheritance was operative from the Prophet's lifetime; and he argues that the early Muslim community subsequently altered the reading of the inheritance verses, replacing a flexible, will-based "proto-Islamic" system with the fixed-share doctrine later codified as 'ilm al-fara'id. The discussion further shows that, while methodologically provocative, Powers' reconstruction rests on an unverified assumption of coordinated textual manipulation and an interpretation of Q. 4:12 that is not fully supported by the transmitted asbab al-nuzul, leaving the classical understanding of naskh a stronger explanatory account.

Abstract

The government, through the policy of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, instructed the establishment of the Merah Putih Village Cooperative with the aim of empowering the people's economy, empowering MSMEs, and strengthening food sovereignty. This study aims to determine whether there is normative disharmony in the policy of establishing the Merah Putih Village Cooperative. The study uses a juridical-normative method using secondary data, including laws and regulations that underlie the policy, Presidential Instructions, and Government Regulations. The theory of the unity of normative order is used to conduct a conceptual analysis of whether the Merah Putih Village Cooperative policy has the potential for normative disharmony. The results of this study indicate that the policy of establishing the Merah Putih Village Cooperative has normative disharmony, namely the lack of synchronization between policy norms and regulations of the Merah Putih Village Cooperative, namely the existence of overlapping norms that have implications for legal uncertainty in policy implementation. The importance of aligning regulations that underlie the implementation of the Merah Putih Village Cooperative so that they are in line with pre-existing normative order, so that the main objective of establishing the Merah Putih Village Cooperative can be realized by paying attention to the normative basis so as to create legal certainty and effectiveness in its implementation.

Abstract

This article examines Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan (AIK) as a lived pedagogical process in Muhammadiyah and ‘Aisyiyah higher education in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Rather than approaching AIK only as a compulsory curriculum or an institutional instrument for transmitting Muhammadiyah values, the article analyzes how AIK is experienced, embodied, negotiated, and sometimes contested in everyday university life. Based on in-depth interviews with nineteen students, AIK lecturers, and institutional actors involved in AIK coordination at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan, and Universitas ‘Aisyiyah Yogyakarta, the article shows that AIK operates through three interconnected dimensions: classroom pedagogy, embodied pedagogy, and institutional pedagogy. Students encounter AIK through lectures, discussions, worship practices, Qur’anic recitation, Al-Ma’un projects, campus mosques, Baitul Arqam, LazisMu, student organizations, and digital religious media. The findings demonstrate that students do not simply receive AIK as fixed knowledge. They interpret it through prior religious backgrounds, bodily habits, family traditions, institutional expectations, and personal aspirations. For some students, AIK deepens religious understanding and social empathy; for others, it raises questions about authority, ritual difference, and religious standardization. The article argues that AIK is best understood as lived pedagogy: a field of Islamic learning in which students learn, embody, negotiate, and sometimes contest Muhammadiyah values in concrete social worlds.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the level of teachers’ participation in administrative roles within secondary schools of Addis Ketema Sub-City, Addis Ababa City Administration. Using a descriptive research design, data were collected from a total of 215 respondents, including 195 teachers, 3 principals, and 17 PTA members. Schools were selected through a census approach, while principals and PTAs were purposively sampled, and department heads were chosen via simple random sampling. Data collection involved questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. Quantitative data were analyzed using frequency distributions, percentages, and mean values, while qualitative data from interviews and discussions were analyzed thematically. The findings reveal that teachers' participation in school administration is generally limited and inadequate. The involvement of principals and PTAs in encouraging teacher participation was found to be ineffective. Several barriers hinder teachers' active engagement, including a lack of proper training and support, an unbalanced power dynamic between teachers and school leaders, and the absence of financial incentives. These issues contribute to a situation where teachers’ roles in school administration are undervalued, which can negatively impact their motivation, interest in school activities, and the overall teaching and learning environment. Based on these findings, the study recommends establishing supportive conditions such as providing training for teachers and administrative staff, recognizing and rewarding exemplary teachers, fostering collaborative relationships among teachers and school leaders, and ensuring transparent communication regarding school planning, budgeting, and income generation activities. Implementing these measures is essential to enhance teachers’ participation in school administration, thereby improving school effectiveness and promoting a more participatory and transparent school environment.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of teacher educators’ psychological safety on their productivity. A quantitative research approach was employed. A total of 1,040 teacher educators from three education universities and eighteen education degree colleges participated in the study, and a simple random sampling technique was used to select the participants. The findings revealed that the teacher educators' level of psychological safety was above average. The results of the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that there were significant differences in psychological safety based on teaching experience and academic qualification. The findings also indicated that the teacher educators' productivity was high. The independent-samples t-test revealed that teacher educators' research experience was significantly related to their productivity, with teacher educators who have research experience have higher productivity than teacher educators who don’t have research experience. Moreover, the results of the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that there were significant differences in productivity based on teaching experience and academic qualification. Furthermore, the results of the correlation analysis showed that teacher educators' psychological safety was positively associated with their productivity. Multiple regression analysis further revealed that psychological safety was a significant predictor of teacher educators' productivity, accounting for 11.8% of the variance in productivity.

Abstract

This study validates the business potential and social impact of BASIS (Bank Sampah SIKK), an integrated smart digital platform designed to commercialize organic waste management through circular economy education across Sekolah Indonesia Kota Kinabalu (SIKK) and over 200 Community Learning Centers (CLCs) in Sabah and Sarawak, Malaysia. Previously, Black Soldier Fly (BSF)-based food waste management suffered from severe operational inefficiencies, which were hindered by up to 80% data fragmentation and geographical constraints. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this study positions BASIS not merely as a monitoring tool, but as a digital transaction platform that converts organic waste into valuable assets. Implementation results demonstrate that the application’s transactional design has successfully converted the active participation of Indonesian migrant workers' children into tangible economic benefits through a point-reward system redeemable for educational products. BASIS has proven effective in shifting student behavior from passive consumption to productive social entrepreneurship, establishing a self-sustaining social enterprise model, and visualizing the economic value of waste in real time. In conclusion, BASIS possesses high scalability as an educational social enterprise capable of sustainably integrating ecological sustainability with the economic empowerment of marginalized migrant communities to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Abstract

Biology learning that is still dominated by conventional teaching approaches tends to reduce student involvement in the learning process, which may affect learning achievement. Meanwhile, the implementation of the Active, Innovative, Creative, Effective, and Enjoyable Learning (PAIKEM) approach integrated with Project Based Learning (PjBL) on Biodiversity topics requires further investigation to determine its effectiveness in improving students’ learning outcomes. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the PAIKEM approach based on Project Based Learning on students’ learning achievement in the Biodiversity topic at SMA Negeri 2 Rantau Utara. This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method using a pretest-posttest control group design. The sample consisted of 70 students divided into an experimental class and a control class, with each class consisting of 35 students. Data were collected using a learning achievement test instrument that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis was conducted through prerequisite tests, including normality and homogeneity tests, followed by hypothesis testing using the Independent Samples t-test with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics version 25. The results showed a significant difference in students’ learning achievement between the experimental class implementing PAIKEM-based Project Based Learning and the control class using conventional learning methods. The hypothesis test results indicated a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000 (p < 0.05) with a t-value of -6.008, indicating that H₀ was rejected and H₁ was accepted. These findings demonstrate that the implementation of PAIKEM-based Project Based Learning enhances student engagement through investigation, group discussion, project development, presentation, and reflection activities, resulting in more meaningful learning experiences. The implication of this study suggests that the PAIKEM approach integrated with Project Based Learning can be used as an alternative Biology learning strategy to improve students’ learning achievement and active participation, particularly in Biodiversity topics.
