Abstract

Social institutions constitute fundamental elements of social life that function to regulate patterns of interaction, fulfill basic social needs, and maintain social order. This article aims to analyze the roles and functions of educational, political, economic, religious, and legal institutions from sociological and Islamic perspectives. This study employs a qualitative approach using library research and descriptive-analytical methods by examining relevant sociological and Islamic studies literature. The findings indicate that from a sociological perspective, social institutions function as structural mechanisms that maintain social stability and integration. Meanwhile, from an Islamic perspective, these institutions are understood as instruments for realizing maslahah (public welfare), justice, and moral values. The integration of sociological analysis and Islamic values provides a comprehensive understanding that social institutions operate not only structurally but also normatively and ethically in shaping a civilized and just social order. This study is expected to contribute academically to the development of sociological and Islamic studies and to serve as a reference for strengthening social institutions amid contemporary societal dynamics.

Abstract

The development of information and communication technology has driven profound transformations in various aspects of social life, including in the realm of religion. This article aims to analyze changes in religious values in the midst of a digital society through a sociology of religion approach. This approach is used to understand how values such as sincerity, simplicity, solidarity, and spirituality experience changes in form, delivery, and meaning, especially due to the penetration of social media, digital platforms, and modern communication technology. This study uses a qualitative approach with literature studies and phenomenological observations of digital religious content in Indonesia. The results of the study show that the transformation of religious values does not only occur in the form of digital mediation, but also in the formation of new religious authorities, symbolic changes, and the commodification of religious values. The phenomena of digital preaching, celebrity ustaz, and online hijrah culture reflect how religion is no longer just a spiritual value system, but also becomes part of social performativity and digital identity. On the other hand, online religious spaces also open up opportunities for the emergence of more inclusive and cross-geographical religious communities. This study recommends the importance of religious digital literacy and the active involvement of religious institutions in guiding people to adhere to the basic values of religion amidst the rapid and complex flow of digital transformation.

Abstract

Deforestation in Aceh Tamiang Regency has become a serious environmental issue driven by the expansion of oil palm plantations, infrastructure development, and industrial activities fueled by waves of modernization. The loss of primary and secondary forest cover has not only caused soil erosion, recurrent flooding, and a decline in biodiversity, but has also triggered land conflicts and deepened poverty among indigenous communities dependent on the forest. This study aims to analyze the relationship between modernization and deforestation in Tamiang, examine the phenomenon through an ecotheological approach, and formulate the contribution of Islamic theological values to environmental conservation efforts. The research employs a qualitative-descriptive method with ecotheological and sociological approaches, relying primarily on literature review techniques (Qur’an, academic journals, and recent news sources). The main theoretical framework is Islamic ecotheology, grounded in the principles of khalifah (vicegerent of God on earth), amanah (trust/responsibility), mizan (balance), and rahmatan lil ‘alamin (mercy to all creation). Key findings reveal that modernization has accelerated deforestation through an economic logic that prioritizes short-term profit, while the ecotheological perspective exposes deforestation as a moral and spiritual crisis resulting from humanity’s deviation from its role as khalifah. Theoretically, this study enriches contextual ecotheology scholarship in Indonesia; practically, it offers religion-based environmental ethics recommendations for local communities and policy inputs for integrating theological values into sustainable forest management in religiously rooted regions.

Abstract

Using a perspective of religious moderation, this study intends to investigate the phenomenon of bullying in Private Islamic Elementary Schools (MIS) and the Tanjung Lenggang community's response through socialization techniques and da'wah in weekly fiqh lessons. Students, educators, and the community are regularly exposed to fiqh teachings that prioritize the virtues of compassion, justice, and tolerance through the methods of socialization and da'wah. The study's findings demonstrate that this approach works well for fostering social cohesion and raising knowledge of bullying prevention. In conclusion, bullying in the educational setting can be lessened by da'wah and socialization based on Islamic moderation.

Abstract

Religious moderation has become a national strategic agenda in Indonesia aimed at maintaining social harmony within a pluralistic society. This policy emphasizes the balance between commitment to religious teachings and respect for diverse religious practices. This study aims to examine the contribution of a gender perspective, particularly the role of Policewomen (Polwan), in strengthening religious moderation in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, this research adopts a normative legal method through a literature review of academic sources, policy documents, and relevant legal regulations. The findings reveal that Policewomen occupy a strategic position in promoting religious moderation through a human-centered, communicative, and persuasive policing approach. The involvement of Policewomen and female community police officers (Bhabinkamtibmas) in community engagement, social mediation, and the security of interfaith religious activities significantly contributes to strengthening national commitment, tolerance, non-violence, and accommodation of local culture. This study concludes that optimizing the role of Policewomen not only advances gender equality within the police institution but also serves as a vital instrument for translating religious moderation from policy discourse into concrete practices at the grassroots level.

Abstract

This study focuses on the phenomenon of hijab cosplay on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. It aims to understand how Muslim women express themselves through hijab cosplay. This research employs a qualitative method, with data collected through literature review and analysis of social media videos using the hashtag #hijabcosplay. Jean Baudrillard’s theory of simulacra is used as the analytical framework to examine hijab cosplay on social media. The findings indicate that hijab cosplay is a practice that combines the identity of Muslim women who wear the hijab with characters from popular culture, such as anime or manga. This phenomenon is intriguing because it merges two distinct realms: the real world (religious identity) and the imaginary world (fictional characters). Therefore, the phenomenon of hijab cosplay leads into a state of hyperreality, in which the boundaries between reality and simulation become blurred.

Abstract

This study examines the dialogical da'wah model of Bro Shah Kirit and the role of the Global Unity Network in promoting interfaith communication in Malaysia. The research is grounded in the growing need for approaches to Islamic preaching that respond peacefully and intelligently to religious diversity in a multicultural society. This study employs a qualitative approach with a field research method, encompassing direct observation in interfaith forums, analysis of sermons and public recordings, as well as brief interviews with speakers and participants involved in the activities. The findings reveal that Bro Shah emphasizes respectful dialogue, critical engagement with religious texts, logical reasoning, and appreciation for other faith traditions as the foundation of his communication style. The Global Unity Network functions as a platform for interfaith education through seminars, workshops, and public discussions. This study concludes that the dialogical da'wah approach serves as an effective strategy to foster social harmony, mutual understanding, and inclusive religious engagement in plural societies.

Abstract

Indigenous religion studies, particularly Arat Sabulungan in Mentawai, are dominated by the world religion paradigm, resulting in biased representations labeled "primitive," "animistic," or "syncretic." This paradigmatic bias not only hinders productive studies of indigenous religion but also obscures the ecological wisdom within their worldview. Amid the global ecological crisis, a new perspective on human-nature relations is needed, one that transcends the anthropocentric view that currently dominates religious discourse. This study aims to explore the worldview of the Mentawai indigenous religion regarding ecological relations and reconstruct ecological understanding from the perspective of the indigenous religion paradigm, specifically examining how rituals in Arat Sabulungan manifest the intersubjective relations between humans, nature, and spiritual entities. The study employs a humanistic approach, incorporating in-depth observations of Arat Sabulungan practices, with a focus on three main rituals: the sikerei healing ritual, the construction of uma, and the raising of pigs. Data are analyzed through the framework of the indigenous religion paradigm and the concept of worldview. Arat Sabulungan offers an understanding of intersubjective relations, different from the hierarchical relations of the world religion paradigm. Humans, nature, and spiritual entities are viewed as subjects possessing agency and consciousness. Healing rituals, the construction of uma, and the raising of pigs demonstrate a profound ecological awareness that manifests the reciprocal relationship between humans and nature. Epistemologically, this research offers an alternative paradigm for the study of indigenous religion. Theoretically, it enriches discussions of the role of religion in the ecological crisis by offering a cosmocentric perspective. Practically, the ecological awareness of Arat Sabulungan can inspire collective efforts to address the contemporary ecological crisis.
