Abstract

Every operating organization keeps tabs on its development by producing accurate financial statements at the conclusion of each fiscal year, which are subsequently distributed to various individual users who are concerned with the organization's development. The accuracy of the financial accounts is then verified by an audit procedure, which is sealed by a transparent audit report provided to the specific business by the audit committee. The main objective of this study was to examine the influence of audit committee independence on the quality of audit reports of Sacco’s in Homabay County, Kenya. This was supported by the fact that there are numerous Sacco’s in Homabay County, many of which had apparently experienced audit problems in the past. Stakeholders’ theory served as the study's compass. This study adopted a descriptive causal research design, the target population was 104 audit committee members of deposit taking Sacco’s in Homabay County as at December 2021. Out of the target population determined using the Krejcie and Morgan formula, 82 members of the audit committee provided responses for the study. Primary data was collected using research questionnaire which involved drop and pick method. Descriptive statistics including a frequency table, mean, and standard deviation were used for data analysis while inferential statistics included Pearson’s correlation analysis. The study found that audit committee independence in Homabay County, Kenya, had a positive and significant impact on the caliber of audit reports on Sacco’s (r=0.530, p<0.05). The study recommends that Sacco’s audit committee members should be as independent as possible in executing their mandate so as to ensure audit reports provided are of quality.

Abstract

The present paper examines the impact of entrepreneurship education on students’ intention to start up business. Using a sample of young Tunisian students from both Sfax and Sousse (these are two tows in Tunisia) universities, we propose to determine the significant factors influencing their entrepreneurial intention. Our econometric results have revealed that the composite variables , i.e, the student’s internal and external socio-cultural background, the students’ profile in terms of their theoretical and practical knowledge in new business start-up and the students’ characteristics (age and, above all, educational level), are the most determining variables affecting students’ intention to engage in business start-ups. The gender variable has no significant effect on entrepreneurial behavior.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship is acknowledged globally as a driver of unemployment reduction, poverty alleviation and national economic well-being. However, many nations, especially developing ones, struggle to sustain growth-oriented entrepreneurship due to limitations in their entrepreneurial ecosystems. With an unemployment rate of 28.9% as of 2019, Lesotho is one of the countries struggling to sustain effective entrepreneurial ecosystems. This article seeks to identify the inadequacies in local entrepreneurial ecosystems that impede the emergence of entrepreneurs and small-and-medium enterprises in Lesotho. This study, grounded in systems theory, utilised a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews to collect data from twenty-five budding entrepreneurs. Data analysis showed that financial institutions funding, entrepreneurial apathy, poor infrastructure, dearth of talents and leaders, and inadequate support networks were the main barriers to entrepreneurship in Lesotho. This study raises awareness of Lesotho's entrepreneurial ecosystem's basic flaws, which hinder growth-oriented business. The study is expected to improve policymakers’ intervention strategies and attract more scholars' attention to the phenomenon. The study is limited in scope due to the participants' concentration in Maseru, the capital city. This geographical restriction is a limitation to the extent that businesses operating in the city and those operating in the countryside may experience different systemic impacts. Future research should explore broader scope.

Abstract

Volcano eruption insurance is an insurance product that provides financial protection to policy holders who experience losses due to volcanic eruptions. This insurance product is still rarely developed in Indonesia, even though this country is very vulnerable to natural disasters. Therefore, this research aims to carry out a simulation of determining volcanic eruption disaster insurance premiums based on collective risk and the level of risk distribution. The data used in this research is the frequency of events and economic losses due to volcanic eruptions. Event frequency and loss data are analyzed using a collective risk model. Apart from that, determining insurance premiums also takes into account loading factors and the level of risk distribution from volcanic eruption disaster data. From the results of the analysis, it was found that natural disaster insurance premiums had increased, along with an increase in the loading factor provided. In addition, insurance premium expenses are influenced by the collective risks faced by customers. The greater the collective risk faced, the greater the insurance premium that customers must bear. Based on the results of the estimates carried out, it is hoped that this research can provide an overview to the Indonesian government in estimating the Mount Meletus insurance scheme. Meanwhile, insurance companies can get an idea of determining insurance premiums according to conditions in the field.

Abstract

During the pandemic, many information about the function of various food and health supplement products for prevention/recovery from Covid-19 infection circulated through EWOM (electronic word of mouth), which was believed by consumers, even though not all of them were proven to be true. This study aims to examine the role of perceived EWOM credibility on consumer satisfaction with food/health supplement products during the COVID-19 pandemic. The theoretical framework guiding this research is Source Credibility Theory, which provides a lens to examine how the credibility of EWOM sources affects consumer satisfaction. The participants were 103 people aged 19-25 years who had purchased and consumed food/health supplement products during the COVID-19 pandemic and had read EWOM about information/reviews of the products they consumed. Participants filled out a questionnaire that measured their perceived EWOM credibility and consumer satisfaction. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results showed that perceived EWOM credibility positively influenced consumer satisfaction. Aspects of perceived EWOM credibility, included argument quality and homophily had a significant influence on consumer satisfaction. The quality of arguments positively contributes to enhancing customer satisfaction, whereas homophily, on the other hand, has a negative impact. Consequently, a heightened perception of EWOM credibility, particularly concerning the quality of argument presented directly correlated with increased participant satisfaction with the food/health supplement products they had consumed. The findings of this study hold practical implications for the promotion of food and health supplements, emphasizing the significance of EWOM credibility. Additionally, the results underscore the importance of fostering information literacy among consumers in this domain. For instance, strategies could include the dissemination of infographics illustrating methods to assess information quality and discern genuine information from hoaxes.   On the other hand, relying solely on information based on shared backgrounds does not fully support the attainment of satisfaction in consumption.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country with two seasons, the rainy season and the dry season. Unstable rainfall can affect rice production and may cause crop failure. The amount of rice production in Indonesia, one of which is in Magelang City, is quite large, so the losses that may be experienced are quite significant. Therefore, a way to reduce the impact of losses experienced by farmers is needed, one of which is through the rice farming insurance program. The purpose of this study is to determine the premium price of rice farming insurance based on rainfall index based on the exit value and trigger value in each growing season. Insurance using the rainfall index can provide protection to farmers due to too little rainfall or too much rainfall. Too much rainfall can cause damage to rice plants resulting in crop failure. The premium calculation method uses the Black-Scholes principle, while the exit value and trigger value are determined by the Historical Burn Analysis method. The result of this study is to obtain various trigger values and exit values as well as premiums that must be paid by farmers in each normal, high, and low (dry) rainfall condition. This value determines the premium price obtained for normal rainfall which is IDR 735,739.66 to IDR 871,698.64, for high rainfall the premium price obtained is IDR 1,404,184.75 to IDR 1,643,307.75, and for low rainfall (dry season) it is IDR 5,541,806.10 to IDR 6,689,629.88.

Abstract

An optimal investment portfolio needs to be formed before an investor invests because it can help investors determine which financial instruments are suitable to choose in order to get the maximum return or profit and the minimum level of risk. In the current situation, where there is an economic transition to a smart carbon economy or low carbon economy, it is necessary to form the optimal portfolio of stocks to facilitate investors in making investments. The purpose of this study is to form the optimal investment portfolio using the Black-Litterman model in a smart carbon economy. The data used is stock data from 24 companies listed on the LQ45 Low Carbon Leaders index for the period 2022-2023. Based on the research results, the Black-Litterman model generates the optimal portfolio with a 0.1% expected return. Thus, the optimal portfolio results with the Black-Litterman model are estimated to generate a profit of 0.1% for smart carbon stock data listed on the LQ45 Low Carbon Leaders index for the 2022-2023 period.
