Abstract

This research aimed to address the difficulties faced by students in listening comprehension, particularly in understanding spoken vocabulary and grasping the overall meaning of audio materials. The study focused on investigating the effect of introducing suprasegmental features on students' listening ability. The significance of this research lies in its potential to enhance students' comprehension of auditory content. The research followed a pre-experimental design, specifically utilizing a pre-test and post-test approach. The participants consisted of 16 students from XII IPA at SMA N 2 Bukik Barisan. Data collection involved assessing the students' performance through pre-test and post-test scores. The intervention involved providing materials on suprasegmental features supported by audio and video. Data analysis was conducted using the t-test formula, with the obtained t-value compared to the critical t-value at a 5% significance level (?=0.05) and 15 degrees of freedom. The results revealed a significant effect of introducing suprasegmental features on students' listening ability, as the obtained t-value (2.827) exceeded the critical t-value (1.753). Moreover, the post-test scores (68.75) exhibited improvement compared to the pre-test scores (55.31). In conclusion, the findings demonstrate that the introduction of suprasegmental features positively impacted students' listening ability. The results imply that integrating suprasegmental features in teaching practices can assist students in enhancing their listening comprehension skills. Therefore, educators are encouraged to incorporate suprasegmental features to foster improved listening abilities among students.

Abstract

This study investigated the anxiety-related challenges faced by students in argumentative writing and their impact on writing performance. The research utilized questionnaires to collect quantitative data from fourth-semester students enrolled in the Argumentative Writing Subject. The study explored psychological, emotional, and cognitive obstacles that impede students' writing abilities and contribute to anxiety. Results indicated that 31.8 percent of students reported psychological symptoms such as excessive sweating and trembling hands when engaging in argumentative writing tasks. These manifestations highlighted the negative influence of anxiety on learning outcomes, emphasizing the need for support and interventions. By addressing psychological, emotional, and cognitive difficulties, promoting engagement in the writing process, and encouraging initiative in group discussions, educators can create an inclusive learning environment that fosters student’s ability to overcome anxiety barriers and excel in argumentative writing. However, it is important to acknowledge limitations in this research, including potential response bias due to self-report measures and the limited sample size from a specific educational institution, which may affect the generalizability of the findings. Future research should employ diverse assessment methods, and larger and more representative samples, and further explore the intricate connections between psychological, emotional, and cognitive symptoms of anxiety and their specific impacts on writing performance to enhance our understanding of this topic.

Abstract

Sign language is communication using non-verbal words which are delivered without words but with body movements/body language or facial expressions. Sign language has evolved into a practical mode of communication that forms the basis of deaf communities. It is a visual-spatial language based on positional and visual elements including the shape of digits and hands, position, orientation, limb, and gestures. This signal can be seen in a small box at the corners of television newscasts. This research reviews the use of sign language as media in delivering information (news) in TV broadcasts. This research was library research. The analysis showed that news programs broadcast by television stations become one of the providers of information. The existence of sign language facilities in news programs at this time at least minimizes gaps in the right to access information among persons with deaf disabilities. Several previous studies show that sign language is media information read by the news anchor to the TV audience (viewers) with the intermediary of a sign language interpreter. Sign language plays an active role for deaf people based on three effects of mass communication which provide direct cognitive, affective, and conative effects for deaf people. There is a relationship between the influence of the use of sign language in news programs on deaf people such as attracting the attention of deaf audiences with an easy visualization. A presentation of the news is enough to meet the information needs of the deaf person by continuing to prioritize the latest information.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the correlation between extrinsic motivation and academic achievement among first-year students studying English at MAS TI Kumpulan during the 2021/2022 academic year. This study revealed several issues affecting students’ motivation in learning English. Specifically, many students lacked interest in studying English, experienced a lack of motivation from teachers, but received a reward at the end of the semester for the highest score. Additionally, a significant number of students failed to complete homework due to inadequate parental support. Furthermore, students found English to be a challenging subject because of a lack of peer support. The study comprised 65 students, with a sample size of 24, selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and documentation. The coefficient of correlation was determined to be -0.114, indicating no significant relationship between extrinsic motivation and academic achievement in English studies among the students. In other words, according to hypothesis testing, the t-score was -0.114 while the t-table was 0.432. This indicates that the t-score was lower than the t-table. As a result, Ha was rejected and Ho was accepted, indicating that there was no significant correlation between students' extrinsic motivation and their academic achievement in the study of English.

Abstract

The insufficient vocabulary of students often leads to their reluctance in applying English language skills. To address this issue and encourage active usage of English, it is crucial to focus on vocabulary development through effective learning practices. In this context, the researcher sought a solution to enhance writing skills and promote a deeper understanding of word meanings. The chosen approach involved incorporating an engaging and enjoyable medium, namely the Puzzle game, as a means of facilitating vocabulary growth. The Puzzle game, specifically the Word Search Puzzle, was selected as it not only serves as a game but also captures students' interest by sparking curiosity about hidden words. In a Word Search Puzzle game, players search for concealed words in provided boxes, guided by word clues. These words may be arranged vertically, horizontally, or diagonally within the grid. The study involves a sample of 20 students selected from the entire population. Utilizing SPSS 22 for calculations, the results indicate statistical significance, leading to the conclusion that the Word Search Puzzle game is effective in enhancing vocabulary. This finding underscores the proven efficacy of the Word Search Puzzle game as a learning medium, demonstrating its capacity to augment students' vocabularies. Consequently, teachers can consider integrating this method into their teaching practices to facilitate effective vocabulary instruction.
