Abstract

Teenage problems and traditional arts are attracting themes of the creation of dance works.  This creative research explores the issue of dance compositions, specifically focusing on the process involved in developing the dance work Si Kenya Kena Lena. The dance work incorporates a synthesis of notions derived from Alma Hawkins and Sumandyo Hadi. The implementation of this theory was conducted in four distinct steps, specifically preparation, organization, arrangement, and presentation. The process of creating a dance piece involves five distinct stages: sensing, valuing, envisioning, embodying, and shaping. This artistic research generates innovative dance pieces that effectively showcase the emotional upheaval experienced by teenagers in their quest for self-discovery, skillfully incorporating Sandur traditional art and East Javanese dances. The use of traditional art aspects in the creative process can generate choreography that imparts a fresh and nuanced perspective.

Abstract

This art-based research explored the sculptural potential of using chrome tanned leather to merge plant forms with materials culture. Chrome tanned leather was selected as the medium for its flexible yet durable qualities that allow it to be manipulated into organic shapes reminiscent of botanicals. A series of sculptural works were created using varieties of chrome tanned leather offcuts that were either stitched, glued or tucked over metal pipes, wood or plastic tube armatures. These armatures were then curled, spiralled or formed into nodule shaped components evoking leaves, vines, roots and pods. The works aimed to blur boundaries between the natural and industrial by incorporating the distinctive patina and textures of chrome tanned leather, a material intrinsically tied to industry and manufacturing. Through an iterative process, techniques for shaping, assembling and finishing the leather components were developed. Finishing techniques such as tooling, staining and distressing were employed to enhance botanical details and accentuate the unique properties of the leather. The research found that chrome tanned leather lends itself well to organic sculptural forms and allowed an imaginative merging of plant inspirations with an industrially produced material. By flexing the material past its functional limits, a hybrid language was discovered that challenges perceptions of what leather can signify as an artistic medium. The research contributes to interrogating relationships between nature, culture and materials.

Abstract

The study of the creation of this work began with an interest in mothers’ love in sincerely nurturing their children and families. Once elaborated, a mother's love is eventually the fruits of the spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). This creation study uses an emic approach to understand the meaning of maternal love as perceived by mothers at the Bhakti Kasih Bunda nursing home in Surakarta. This creation study stage was divided into several steps in creating the work: (1) data collection through field observations, literature studies, and in-depth interviews with mothers at the Bhakti Kasih Bunda nursing home as well as Christian and Confucian religious leaders; (2) data analysis and conclusions as a source of work creation; (3) the process of creating works, which involves stages of experimentation, contemplation, and execution. he result of this creation study was a painting that uses mixed media with collage techniques. The works were divided into four parts based on subject matter, all of which are metaphors for maternal love as the fruit of the spirit. The four parts are the earth and the solar system, humans, animals, and plants.

This study explores the creative process behind the Buddhist hymn Breathing In Breathing Out, specifically chosen for its recognized association with Buddhist meditation techniques. The study employs a qualitative methodology, involving five informants who possess expertise in music studies and Buddhism. Its objective is to investigate the process of creating Buddhist songs and analyze their influence on listeners. The results indicate that 1) songwriting for Buddhism is generally a voluntary pursuit without any external financial support or specified objectives, and 2) the creative process adheres to the four stages suggested by Graham Wallas. Furthermore, the practice of Breathing In Breathing Out has a beneficial impact on listeners’ mental well-being, improving mental conditions through enhanced concentration, focus, and self-acceptance.

Abstract

Wood carving has been an integral part of many ethnic groups in Ghana and worldwide. Currently, Ghanaian wood carvers produce countless varieties of wooden sculptures for tourist trade or export. The wood carving business in Vakpo has provided employment for natives in the production of different wooden objects such as stools, umbrella tops, linguist staffs, walking sticks, human and animal figures/figurines,  and many more. Unlike any other wood carving industry, one of the major challenges facing Vakpo traditional wood carving is less recognition by art lovers due to scanty literature in the town and insufficient art enthusiasts in Ghana.  The study adopts a qualitative research design with a descriptive research method. The data was gathered through observations and interviews. The results indicate that wood carvers in Vakpo exhibit mastery in creativity, intricate cuts as well as finishing, and their quality wood carvings are by no means inferior to the wooden sculptures of other wood carvers from renowned towns such as Aburi, Ahwiaa, Foase, and others.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of Chinese and Balinese cultural elements in poster design as a means of visual communication. This study aims to understand how cultural acculturation is manifested in poster design by integrating visual idioms from both cultures to convey messages of solidarity, tolerance, and cultural appreciation and preservation. Using qualitative research and a Design Thinking approach, this study seeks to present cultural acculturation values in poster design elements and evaluate their impact on the audience. The research findings demonstrate that the combination of Chinese and Balinese cultural symbols, colors, and patterns effectively produced a communicative and aesthetically appealing visual narrative. These findings highlight the significance of cultural comprehension in visual communication design and contribute to the development of culture-based design practices. This study enhances our understanding of the function of design in communicating cultural values.

Abstract

The 19th century was a turbulent period for the island of Java, especially for its Javanese inhabitants, who had recently survived a devastating conflict known as the Java War. Prince Diponegoro became a symbol of Javanese resistance and a pivotal figure, signifying the inception of the high colonial era under the rule of Pax Nederlandica. Key historical figures like Raden Ngabehi Ronggowarsito, Mangkunegoro IV, and Raden Saleh Syarif Bustaman came of age in this epoch. The research project seeks to juxtapose the thoughts of these three key historical figures. A historical approach is used to analyze the available primary and secondary data and to constitute a metaphorical approach for reading art through the prism of these three exceptionally talented figures. The creative process of “The Intersection of Time” has been produced based on various considerations. Their interactions resulted in (1) heightened social awareness, which is evident in the way their thought processes responded to contemporary socio-economic, political, and cultural conditions during their respective lifetimes; (2) increased aesthetic awareness, allowing for creative responses to their environment and contemporary circumstances through their work; and (3) enhanced spiritual awareness, informing their individual and collective initiatives to protect Java’s circumstance. Drawing from a profound understanding of Javanese history, the history of the three selected individuals, and their artwork, the film “The Intersection of Time” will effectively encapsulate the distinct spirit and zeitgeist of the 19th century, setting it apart from conventional historical narratives.

Abstract

It is scarce to find a village where most of its citizens are engaged in traditional wayang crafts, especially if the most residents are Muslims. Moreover, the number of puppets needed to fulfill shadow puppet shows is limited throughout the world. However, the fact shows that Butuh Hamlet has a majority of residents who work as wayang artisans and still exist today, a model for the continuation of traditional arts in facing tough challenges and is an example of the sustainability of traditional arts in facing tough challenges, both externally and internally. This sustainability can be seen in the number of residents who still pursuing the crafting profession, which craft are still the main source of income for residents. Butuh Hamlet has received the title of Kampung Berseri (a beautiful and clean village). Apart from that, they also continue to work on strengthening the wayang craft with the Among System: caring for, fostering, and sharpening each other in developing the wayang craft. The sustainability of wayang as a means of livelihood and a medium for preaching (da'wah) has made the lives of artisans better.
