Abstract

Background Preschool children (golden age periode) are the age where children develop the confidence to explore their independence. One form of independence for preschool children in personal hygiene is brushing their teeth independently. Preschoolers are prone to experience dental caries due to the consumption of sweet foods and low teeth brushing habits, so proper parental parenting is needed to foster independence in maintaining dental hygiene. This research aims to determine parenting patterns and the level of independence in brushing teeth of preschool children at the Assisi Catholic Kindergarten Medan. The method used is a descriptive method with a Cross-Sectional approach. The sample in this study are 35 respondents. The sampling technique is Purposive sampling. The research instrument used is a questionnaire Tiarasukma on parenting patterns and independence in brushing teeth. The research results shows that the majority of parents implemented democratic parenting at 62.9% and the level of independence for preschool children in brushing their teeth reached 74.3%. It is hoped that the results of this research will become learning material for health workers in providing information to parents regarding the implementation of good and correct parenting patterns to help parents more easily teach independent tooth brushing to preschool children.

Abstract

Introduction Fever is one of the most common side effects of DPT immunization in infants, often causing concern among parents. Data from Puskesmas Remboken in 2023 showed that 32.6% of infants experienced Post-Immunization Adverse Events (KIPI), with fever being the most frequent at 29.5%, followed by injection site pain (8.3%), swelling (0.97%), and other reactions (0.57%). Onion compresses are a safe, natural alternative for reducing fever because the compounds they contain help lower body temperature through heat transfer. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of a combination of red onion and Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) compresses in reducing fever in infants after DPT immunization at Puskesmas Remboken, Minahasa Regency. Method the research uses a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The study involved 33 infants selected using accidental sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data analysis was conducted using the paired samples t-test and the experiment was conducted for ± 30 days. Result showed that the t-test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating that the combination of red onion and VCO compresses was effective in reducing infant body temperature. Conclusion this combination therapy is an effective, safe, and easily applicable non-pharmacological method for managing fever in infants after DPT immunization. It also has the potential to reduce dependence on antipyretics and improve the quality of infant care.

Abstract

Vaginal discharge is often a disturbing complaint for women, especially those using hormonal contraception. Although common, this condition can be concerning, especially if accompanied by changes in color, odor, or itching. This study aims to identify factors associated with vaginal discharge among hormonal contraception users at the Tapa Community Health Center. This study used a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 58 respondents was selected using purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed a relationship between age and vaginal discharge (p-value =0.009 <0.05), occupation and vaginal discharge (p-value = 0.005 <0.05), type of contraception and discharge (p-value = 0.005 <0.05), and vaginal pH and discharge (p-value = 0.000 <0.05). These findings underscore the importance of healthcare professionals providing appropriate education and counseling to hormonal contraceptive users to effectively prevent and manage vaginal discharge.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of assertive communication on the mental health of midwifery students from the perspective of communication psychology. The background of this research was based on the high academic pressure and clinical practice experienced by midwifery students, which often leads to stress, anxiety, and depression. This situation necessitates effective communication strategies to maintain students’ psychological well-being during their studies. Assertive communication is considered one of the strategies that enable individuals to express their thoughts and feelings honestly and openly without harming others. This study employs a qualitative approach using data collection techniques including in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGD), participatory observation, and documentation. Participants were purposively sampled from midwifery students at UIN Alauddin Makassar who experienced various academic and clinical pressures. The collected data were analyzed thematically with validation through source triangulation and member checking to ensure the credibility and validity of the findings. The results show that students with passive communication styles tend to experience excessive anxiety and low self-confidence, while aggressive communication styles often trigger interpersonal conflicts that negatively affect psychological conditions. Conversely, students who apply assertive communication demonstrate higher resilience, better management of academic and clinical stress, healthy social relationships, and greater emotional stability. From the perspective of communication psychology, assertive communication functions as a protective mechanism that supports the mental health of midwifery students. This study recommends integrating assertive communication training into the midwifery curriculum as a strategic effort to enhance soft skills and support the psychological well-being of students.
