Theologia in Loco
ISSN : 26214903     EISSN : 26214911     DOI : 10.55935

A Theological Reflection on COVID-19: Suffering Christ and the Paradigm of Discipleship in Mark 9:36-37 David Kristanto

Abstract

This article seeks to answer the question, “Where is God in the midst of suffering?”, through reflecting on the paradigm of discipleship in Mark 9:36-37. Welcoming a child is a parabolic action done by Christ to show that the way to be the greatest is to welcome the weakest or to be the servant of all. A child is used as a paradigm due to his or her low status in the Greco-Roman society. Children had no right, seen as properties rather than persons, and thus equated to slaves. Therefore, welcoming a child means welcoming the weakest of the society, and doing so means to welcome Christ himself and the one who sent him. The suffering caused by COVID-19 makes the whole world suffer, yet it also creates a bigger gap between the rich and the poor, the strong and the weak. A reflection on the paradigm invites Christians to side with the weakest and those who are in need, hoping that the kingdom of God will be ushered into this suffering world.

Abstract

This article is a contextual theology regarding the poor in Indonesia in the Covid-19 Pandemic situation. I will start this paper by presenting the poverty situation and poor people’s experience of injustice in Indonesia during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Then, I will discuss the biblical review of God’s will for justice for the poor and discuss the perspective of liberation theology on poverty by Aloysius Pieris. After that, both discussions will be placed in the conversation with John 20:22. In the end, this paper will conclude a contextual theological construction of the Holy Spirit, as the breath of the vulnerable and the marginalized people who seek for justice in the Covid-19 Pandemic situation.

Abstract

Through this paper, I elaborate the liturgical conversation from the perspective of pastoral theology. I argued that the whole liturgical practice was pastoral practice. Referring to the events of Christ, liturgical practice as pastoral practice is able to reform and transform the people in worship. I also argued that the planning and organizing of the liturgy should deliberately and take into account the pastoral dimension.

Abstract

It is profoundly known that in Indonesia, Genesis 19:1-19 is used to legitimate the movement against homosexual, to discriminate and abuse them. For years, scholars have shaped two different major perspectives in interpreting the passage as a form of God’s punishment towards Sodom. One take side against homosexuals and conclude that the passage speaks about God’s punishment of homosexuality since it is counted as sin while the others take side on homosexuals and agreed that the passage was merely a violation of hospitality. This article expands the aforementioned discourse and broaden the horizon by exploring a new thought based on qualitative research with an intercultural hermeneutics approach developed by Hans de Wit. Along with such an approach, the focus group discussion with ordinary readers resulted that the problem mentioned in Genesis 19 is a matter of patriarchy issues.

Abstract

This article explores the meaning of conscience (sunedēsis) in the Pauline letters in relation to Christian ethics. I have argued that if humans act based on their conscience, without depending on the judgment of others, they will be their own self. Obedience to conscience is an ethical egoism that starts from conscience, because its ethical actions are rooted in moral truth which becomes a moral obligation. The understanding of conscience in the Pauline letters show that decision making does not depend on others, but depends on conscious personal decisions. By doing so, someone appears as him or herself who has a strong personality and a great-hearted person. By taking a decision based on conscience, man will act carefully, prudently and be conscious to take responsibility for his or her actions.

Abstract

This article is about to display the DNA search process of GKJ Joglo by using DNA theory of Kevin Graham Ford congregation. This research is based on the realization that it is important for a church to find its DNA, which is why DNA is moving the whole life of the congregation, even exceeding the formulation of its vision. With qualitative research methods, this paper will start a discussion: the Church’s DNA theory, search process, and research results. Hopefully through the findings of this DNA, the congregation can achieve a complete and profound understanding of itself in the midst of a concrete local context. Then from there he can transform himself to become a community of faith whose presence and service is meaningful and impactful to the wider community.

Abstract

The  phenomenon of  Christian Prince  and Ustaz Charis Bangun Samudra has generated a  specific image of the profiles  as the defenders of the faith as the constructed image of the two that is popularly and publicly known.  This article investigates the image with a multidisciplinary methodology to show the multiple images that are communicated by the phenomenon. This article addresses revivalism of religious apologetic of both communities, religious phobia, Christianophobia, and  Islamophobia in the communities to argue that the image cannot be justified theologically since it contradicts the religious ethics of the theological approach employed in this article.   Keywords:  Construction,  Image,  Multi-discipline,  Apologetics, and  Religious Phobia Abstrak Fenomena Christian  Prince  dan Ustaz Charis  Bangun  Samudra membentuk suatu  konstruksi  citra  yang  sangat  spesifik  bagi  masing-masing  tokoh  tersebut.

Abstract

Being church in the world is a way of life for church that is determined by its DNA and God’s design. This article offers the metaphor for a church in the world called “public congregation.” It is characterized by three dimensions—missional, relational, and incarnational. This article uses Joas Adiprasetya’s concept of perichoresis in conversation with Leonard Sweet’s thoughts on the missional, relational, and incarnational (MRI) church. The conversation is further extended to include the metaphoric approach by Donald Messer to argue for the relevance of public congregation as a metaphor for church life and orientation toward the world.
