Theologia in Loco
ISSN : 26214903     EISSN : 26214911     DOI : 10.55935

Abstract

This article aims to describe and analyze - as comprehensively and objectively as possible - how the history of the Protestant Church in West Timor, especially during the Nederlandsch Zendeling Genootschap (1820-1860), took place. The results obtained clearly show that the Protestant Church continues to experience growth despite various challenges. One notable thing is that the growth of the Protestant Church in West Timor during the NZG period was not only due to the works of European missionaries but also because of the work of local people, both men, women, adults, and children.

Abstract

The story of Luth (read: Lot) is usually read as a text about homosexuality in both Christianity and Islam. By exploring a cross-textual reading from leading Muslim interpreters in Indonesia, Hamka with Al Azhar Juzu Commentary, Quraish Shihab with Al Misbah Commentary and interpretation of the Ministry of Religion, this article unveils the hidden meaning of Luth’s story, which today’s readers often overlook, especially concerning the text of the Qur’an, namely Surah Asy-Syu’ara 26: 166-175, Surah Al-Naml 27: 54-59 and Surah Al-Ankabut 29: 28-30. Through a cross-textual reading, the article unveils the new meaning of the story, i.e., the crimes of the Sodomites not only related to sexual violence and hostility, but also, with the terms al-fahisyah (abomination), al-sayyiat (crime), al-musrifun (people who are excessive), al-’adun (people who transgress), al-jahl (ignorance), and alkhaba’is (bad deeds), which are the accumulation of various kinds of crimes, crimes, and abominations degrading humanity. The cross-textual reading between the interpreters of the Qur’an and the Bible provides the viewpoints, insights, and values in the cross-textual hermeneutical encounter of different religions, traditions, and scriptures.

Abstract

The explanation of the church building as a liturgical space in this article will focus on two things. First, the area that separates the sacred from the secular world. The separated place points towards the meaning of the church that reveals God‘s presence in the world. The church is not just alive but also gives meaning to the whole life of the entire creation. Second, the celebration room that narrates God‘s works in history. As a liturgical area, the church building uses several metaphors to tell about God‘s works, for example, the gate of heaven, the pregnant mother, and the sailing ship. This article argues that the interior of the liturgical space narrates the church‘s view on God and God‘s creation. Further, this article emphasizes for the importance of the liturgical space as a reflection of the church theology by using the ritual, theological, and anthropological views of the church‘s interior space.

Abstract

Postcolonial study is a method for examining a social problem or issue. It frequently uses the term subaltern to refer to groups marginalized in the social system by a hegemonic power for specific reasons, such as social class, religion, gender, race, language, and culture. The complexity of colonial effects obscures the extent to which colonialism has influenced our perspective, philosophy, and knowledge, such as regulations, policies, politics, and even our educational system that oppress others, the subaltern. This essay employs a postcolonial perspective (the subaltern theory) to demonstrate who and how people are marginalized within society’s system. Subaltern theory evolves into a way of thinking that decolonizes all spheres of life, including religious education. Furthermore, using Liam Gearon’s analysis, which examined the legal framework, educational system, and curriculum for religious education in Britain, and the marginalization within Britain’s religious education system or curriculum. This article emphasizes the need for Christian education to encourage awareness and critical thinking to change the external environment of marginalization. The author argues that subaltern theory enables Christian religious education to examine its curriculum and content to ensure that it does not perpetuate oppression but fosters critical thinking that results in in-depth reflection and uninhibited creativity to address social and theological issues.

Abstract

This article aims to emphasize the importance of the concept of good governance for Pentecostal-Charismatic churches, which are prone to scandals, especially in financial cases. The leadership system centered on one spiritual leader without being critical causes the risk of financial scandals. Methodologically, this essay uses the theories of good governance developed in the context of modern organizations or institutions whose participation, accountability, transparency, and authority values demonstrate good governance to support the primary standards of action and behavior of stakeholders. This article brings into dialogue these theories with the Pentecostal-Charismatic theology that focuses on the work and experience of the Holy Spirit. It further integrates practical and systematic theology. The author argues that the implementation of good governance is critical to regulating the organizational life of Pentecostal-Charismatic churches that emphasize work and experience with the Holy Spirit to manage a healthy and proper church life.
Kerajaan Allah sebagai Landasan bagi Relasi antara Gereja dan Dunia dalam Teologi Wolfhart Pannenberg Ambrosius Setiadvento Haward

Abstract

Wolfhart Pannenberg understood the eschatological dimension as an essential element in the discourse of the Kingdom of God. Unfortunately, this critical element is often missing in theological discourses in general that limit the theme of the Kingdom of God in the context of the end of time and disconnect it from everyday human life. This work aims to explain Pannenberg’s thoughts about the Kingdom of God, which is an eschatological realityand closely related to Christian participation in the world. The author argues that Pannenberg understood the Kingdom of God as a foundation for the church and that the hope for the realization of God’s Kingdom urged the church to embody the values of God’s Kingdom by engaging actively with the world today.

Abstract

The development of experiential human sexuality workshops within faith communities in South Africa (SA) is showcased. The findings from a 2019 empirical study with local church congregations around LGBTIQ+ belonging are used as starting point. The intervention brings together people of diverse sexualities and genders from various Christian faith contexts. Methodologies from a longstanding programme developed in the USA are adapted, that was shaped by learnings from the SA Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This is reworked into a continuum approach to sexuality and gender, developing new tools, and using the lens of intersectionality within the SA context. The article explores the potential and pitfalls of using the workshop piloted twice in 2020, more widely in faith settings to create spaces for safe encounter between straight and LGBTIQ+ people engaging on human sexuality, building solidarity and strengthening ally-ship. It concludes to show how an important gap within both LGBTIQ+ activism and theology is met.

Abstract

This article attempts to criticize three main dimensions of Christian theology that are generally anthropocentric: incarnation theology, the concept of imago Dei, and ecclesiology. This article offers a new understanding of the three concepts by engaging with several theologians, namely Jaques Derrida, Neils Gregersen, Jürgen Moltmann, Lynn Towsend White, and some others theologians. The theology of the incarnation is reconstructed more broadly to interpret the incarnation not only for humans, but all creation. Furthermore, the idea of Christ the Imago Dei and all creation created in the unique relationship of the Trinity is used as the key to declaring all creation as imago Christi and imago Trinitatis. These two reconstructions become the basis for correcting the concept of ecclesiology which tends to be anthropocentric. The main goal is to offer a cosmologically-based theological perspective that is not exclusive for humans, but inclusive for all creation—communio creatorum—the fellowship of all creations. Each with its uniqueness has an equal opportunity to glorify God. This article further provides alternative thoughts in dealing with the current ecological crisis.
