Abstract

Various studies have been conducted to understand the anti-Jewish narratives in the Gospel of John, yet the aspect of trauma is often overlooked. In this paper, I argue that collective trauma plays a significant role in the emergence of anti-Jewish narratives, particularly in John 9, which serves as a trauma narrative to interpret and construct the collective identity of the Johannine community following their expulsion from the synagogue. The article begins with a survey of the development of studies on the Jewish conflict with the Johannine community, along with my critique, followed by an explanation of Jeffrey Alexander's collective trauma theory and James Louis Martyn's two-level drama theory. The conclusion is that hatred toward Jews is not a theological truth or a historical statement from Jesus but part of the process of narrating trauma and constructing collective identity. This aims to prevent readers of John from becoming vicarious trauma carriers that perpetuate anti-Judaism

Abstract

Western colonization presents the domination system of authorities to the marginalized (subaltern). The authorities colonize based on their interest in the subaltern. The model of colonization has an impact on various aspects of life, including the system of education. The system of pedagogy is in charge of various systems, including family, as shown in the relationship between parents and children. Sometimes, parents posit themselves as the authorities and children as the subalterns. In some conditions, its domination has the potential to turn into a kind of verbal abuse that harms children. In response to the issue, I employ postcolonial theory to identify and transform the dominion system of others to an egalitarian system of education. In conclusion, this study aims to revisit the system of education based on decolonial theory as a proposal alternative and solution as Marshall B. Rosenberg proposes on anti-violent communication.

Abstract

This article discusses the involvement of children in Holy Communion at GKPI using the theory of Being as Communion according to John Zizioulas. This article is motivated by the importance of Holy Communion as one of the sacraments that is a gift for all people. However, the GKPI itself as a Lutheran church rejects the idea of children participating in Holy Communion. This article departs from qualitative methods and uses a constructive theology approach, which aims to construct a theological understanding that children are also part of Communio Sanctorum and also participate in Holy Communion. Thus, through the theory of Being as Communion according to John Zizioulas, it can provide a relevant view for the GKPI in understanding Holy Communion for children, because children are also part of the Communio Sanctorum, Holy Communion is God's gift to all people and the experience of faith is not only a matter of theological formulation but also intuitive and emotional matters.

Abstract

This study explores the role of hymns in Kidung Keesaan as a medium for conveying ecological theology within the context of Indonesian churches. The analysis of hymn lyrics reveals that key principles of ecotheology, such as the recognition of nature as God's creation, harmony within creation, and God's continuous sustenance, are clearly reflected. These hymns encourage congregations to care for and preserve the environment as an act of faith. However, there is room for further development in aligning ecotheological messages with practical actions in congregational life. The study recommends a more applied approach in utilizing church hymns as educational tools and promoting ecological action among congregations.

Abstract

Questioning the liturgy of the offering, which has been solemnly carried out but has become so common as a fundraiser for the church, is the starting point of revitalizing this discourse through research. Etymological study, liturgical study, biblical study, and customs, are tools to debunk the hypothesis that sacrifices and sacrifices have their own meanings, so that offerings do not stop only at the delivery of materials and properties at the banquet table. Andrea Bieler and Luise Schottroff, The Eucharist: Bodies, Bread, and Resurrection, inspired the theology of offerings in three forms, namely: vicarious offering and symbolic offering at the altar, and a reasonable offering as offering exchange in a real forms for outside of the church. Sending a gift as an offering of gratitude to God is a returning of gifts to other people and the earth.

Abstract

This research focuses on the ecumenical movement within the scope of public and private senior high schools (SMA/SMK) in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta. The subjects of this research are Protestant and Catholic Religious Education teachers, identified as initiators of ecumenical encounters. The research topics explored include the teachers' understanding of ecumenism and their role in fostering it through collaboration with Christian and Catholic Spiritual organizations in their respective schools. Drawing on James Fowler's theory of faith development, the study also aimed to evaluate the extent to which this collaboration supports students' faith development in relation to their current stages. The study employed a quantitative data analysis method using questionnaire distribution. The results indicate that the teachers understand the ecumenical movement as a means of promoting brotherhood among Christian students, which is realized through joint activities. This ecumenical movement, while serving as a commendable model, must also be evaluated to achieve the ideal state of students' faith development. Their collaboration should provide a space for sharing experiences and mutual strengthening in the process of faith development toward maturity.

Abstract

Pela Gandong is a traditional kinship system indigenous to Maluku that has demonstrated a sustained capacity for maintaining social harmony and mediating conflict across communities, including between Muslim and Christian communities. Despite this significance, its potential as a bridge for Gospel communication within the framework of Indonesian contextual theology has not been systematically examined through an adequate cross-cultural communication framework. This study aims to analyze the values embedded in Pela Gandong and to assess their relevance as a medium for communicating Christ to the Malukan community. Drawing on a descriptive-qualitative approach and library research method, the study interprets Pela Gandong through the cross-cultural communication framework of David J. Hesselgrave. The study finds that Pela Gandong embodies three core values — social harmony, conflict mediation, and the instrumentalization of peace — that correspond substantively to Christian teachings on love, reconciliation, and shalom. This correspondence constitutes a theological point of contact through which the Gospel can be communicated contextually and organically, without compromising the integrity of local culture. These findings suggest that Pela Gandong can function as a legitimate cultural bridge in contextual missiological practice in Maluku, while also offering a replicable model for analogous approaches in other pluralistic cultural contexts across Indonesia.

Abstract

Local churches in Indonesia hold a rich deposit of theological and historical memory rooted in the founding faith experiences of their communities, yet this deposit is under threat due to limited institutional awareness and capacity for preservation. At the same time, scholarly engagement with the historiography of local Indonesian churches — particularly work that offers a directly applicable methodological framework — remains scarce in the literature of Indonesian Christian theology and history. This article aims to construct a theoretical and practical foundation for local churches in Indonesia to undertake archival preservation and begin writing their church histories in a systematic manner. Drawing on a literature review and conceptual analysis, the article argues that local churches bear a theological and historical responsibility to save and preserve their memories (saving memories), and that this responsibility can be fulfilled through two complementary methodological approaches: formal history and pluralistic historiography. These findings indicate that the application of both approaches enables local churches not only to conserve past memory but also to transform it into historical narrative that contributes to a richer understanding of the development of Christianity in Indonesia.

Abstract

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) through outline-based prompt engineering, referred The emergence of outline-based prompt engineering — referred to in this study as Prompting Outline Production — has produced troubling phenomena in academic environments, such as claims of “writing 300 pages in three weeks, ready to publish.” Despite growing concern, the ethical dimensions of this practice have not yet been examined systematically through a comprehensive framework of ethical philosophy. This study aims to analyze the ethical limits of Prompting Outline Production through three philosophical perspectives: utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics. Drawing on a literature review and Gadamer’s philosophical-hermeneutical method of horizon fusion applied to the thought of Jeremy Bentham, Immanuel Kant, and Aristotle — and reinforced by Robert Nozick’s concept of the experience machine — the study finds that utilitarianism and deontology yield neutral verdicts on Prompting Outline Production and are therefore insufficient as determinants of its ethical limits. Virtue ethics and the experience machine concept, by contrast, identify two essential ethical boundaries: rationality as the natural function of the human person, and authentic experience as existential meaning-making. From these two boundaries, the study identifies three distinct areas of AI use — reference searching, data processing, and outline development — each carrying a different ethical categorization. These findings offer a conceptual foundation for revising AI use policies in educational institutions, particularly in building a regulatory framework rooted in the values of human formation rather than mere productive efficiency.

Abstract

Religious intolerance against Christians in Indonesia — ranging from prohibitions on worship to the destruction of church buildings — raises urgent existential questions about how recurring suffering can be understood and responded to theologically. While the theology of the cross offers a framework for making sense of such suffering, its dialogue with absurdist philosophy, which confronts suffering directly and without recourse to transcendent hope, remains underexplored in Indonesian contextual theology. This article aims to analyze the points of convergence and divergence between Albert Camus’s absurdism, particularly the figure of Sisyphus, and the theology of the suffering of Christ’s cross as a reflective framework for oppressed Christians. Drawing on a library research method and philosophical-theological discourse analysis applied to Camus’s writings, theological literature on the suffering of Christ, and documentation of intolerance cases, the article identifies three points of both convergence and divergence: both acknowledge suffering as a recurring and unavoidable burden; both require active consciousness in bearing it; yet they differ fundamentally in their ultimate orientation — Sisyphus chooses revolt without transcendent hope, while Christian faith endures in the hope of salvation. Rather than cancelling each other out, absurdism and the theology of the cross function as a dialogical mirror that sharpens theological understanding of suffering while offering concrete ethical and existential resources for oppressed Christian communities in Indonesia.
