Abstract

This article offers a reading of Life of Anthony through the lens of gender performance theory and masculinity studies to uncover one fourth-century construction of the ideal Christian man. Through the use of literature contemporary to Athanasius, I argue that Athanasius combined bodily self-presentation with literary and intellectual self-presentation to construct the ideal Christian man and secure his own masculinity in the public eye. One way he achieved this was by creating a hagiographical version of Anthony on whom he could project his own ideological preferences concerning asceticism and masculinity. Athanasius' construction of the Arian as a cunning and feminine figure in his other writings and Anthony as a masculine figure who denounces Arianism effectively typifies fidelity to Nicene orthodoxy as a masculine trait and deviation from Nicene orthodoxy as feminine. This established Anthony as a beacon of masculine orthodoxy for others to emulate.

Abstract

This paper interprets Genesis 1 and 2 (creation narrative) using a gender anthropological perspective as an attempt to show gender inclusiveness in Genesis 1 and 2 that embraces gender minorities. Starting from the awareness of the marginalization of gender minorities both inside and outside the church using the biblical text, this article emphasizes that the marginalization of gender minorities is not the main message of Genesis 1 and 2. This paper begins by discussing the context of marginalization of gender minorities using biblical texts to legitimize violence against minority gender identities or orientations. Then this article uses an inclusive gender interpretation of Genesis 1 and 2 to demonstrate an anthropological-based inclusive interpretation of gender injustice and gender justice.

Abstract

The future of the church does not depend on the younger generation, but the Lord Jesus Christ. This theological foundation leads the church—in this case GPIB—to a more effective and robust ministry for the Millennial generation through discipleship. This paper aims to show that without discipleship, every effort to reach Millennials to get involved in the church is efficient but has not been effective yet. Modifying worships and traditions to reach Millennials is a form of external transformation, while discipleship talks about internal transformation. Without internal transformation, efficient external transformation efforts have not been effective.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This article discusses qualitative research on youth spirituality in Gereja Bethel Indonesia Bless Impact Generation (GBI BIG) using the investigative method of Christian Smith. The results of this study indicate that young people have a spirituality that is moralistic, therapeutic, and deistic. This article criticizes this moralistic, therapeutic, and deism spirituality from a dogmatic point of view. Through David Wells' Christology view as the theological apparatus, the author believes that moralistic, therapeutic and deistic spirituality will result in failure in the growth of Christian faith because it displaces Christ as the focal point of faith. Complementing Wells' thought, this article brings up the idea of Pneumatic Christocentrism as a theological offering. Keywords: GBI, moralistik, terapeutik, deisme, Pneumatic Christocentrism.

Abstract

The stories of the western male missionary are commonly and widely known in mission history. This article, however, reclaims the widely forgotten stories of women missionaries as authentic mission narratives relevant to the contemporary mission preaching conducted in the local Indonesian churches such as the Evangelical Christian Church in Minahasa.  This article uses a feminist postcolonial perspective to argue that women missionaries are postcolonial subjects. It further uses their narratives to shape the local church's sermon as a "counter-testimony" to the grand Christian mission narratives that often forget women missionaries' voices and roles.
A Public Theological Response to Gender-based and Sexual Violence in Indonesia Erich von Marthin Elraphoma

Abstract

Gender-based and sexual violence is a public concern. In Indonesian society, three prominent entities (the state, the academy, and the religion) must provide their perspectives to overcome and prevent all forms of gender-based and sexual violence. On the one hand, the state exists via policies in the form of laws related to the prevention and solution to the problems of gender-based violence and sexual violence. As organizations and organisms, on the other hand, academia and religions contribute to the beliefs, concepts, and practices of gender and human sexuality. As a religious institution, the church’s action to prevent gender-based and sexual violence is also a form of self-criticism. The church may sanctify violence through gender-biased Bible reading or even commit gender-based violence and or sexual violence against its congregation members through its pastors. The church’s understanding of gender and sexual-based violence will allow the church to collaborate with the state to provide a sense of justice, security, and peace for all people, transcending the limitations of gender differences and sexuality. The church can offer theological concepts and practices that address and prevent gender-sexual-based violence both in church and in society in two ways: By reflecting on the experiences of victims of gender-based and sexual violence and by re-examining the root factors of violence in the history of the church and the church’s teaching on gender and sexuality, I propose that the church emphasize the diversity of God’s creation and the equal relations among humans beyond sexual and gender particularity by redefining the human body in Christian Theology that will serve as the foundation for resisting sexual violence and discrimination.
