Abstract

When exploring the unity of the Father and the Son in the Gospel of John, scholars tend to skip John 6:60-71. This section portrays the unity of the Father and the Son that has significant theological implications for the church’s soteriology and ecclesiology. The author argues that John 6:60-71 depicts the unity of the Father and the Son in selecting the disciples. This view implies that salvation and the fellowship of believers are the work of the Father and the Son. The author reviews several aspects: the gospel’s historical and literary contexts, including the structure of the gospel, the exegesis of John 6:60-71 and its theological implications on the aspects of the unity of the Father and the Son. Finally, this paper concludes with the idea that salvation and the fellowship of believers are the work of the Father and the Son described in John 6: 60-71.

Abstract

The unfamiliar words in the congregational songs evoke my attention to investigate the roots and the hidden meaning of the songs. Without problems, congregations often keep singing the songs, although some words have no clear meaning. How does the meaning of the Bible verses from which the songs originate change to give rise to different impressions and messages? How can one or two words appropriately narrate the majesty of God? How does a one word conversation change its nuance when sung? These things led me to explore some words and investigate them from the original song and translated vocabulary perspective to find a deeper theological meaning. Some impressive words could be more meaningful or more precise. I chose those words and investigated them to get a more profound impression and message. I found that those words are chosen by the composer or translator convey a personal faith experience that impacts the community. In this article I offer the people to take attention on words of songs. They give a deep nuance and meaning for spiritual life.

Abstract

This study explores the traces of the desire for education historically and phenomenologically in Indonesia amid secularism and nationalism discourse. Several questions can be asked regarding the portrait of education amid the crush of secularism and nationalism. For example, what was the picture of the world of education and humans (as well as society) who were in the crush of secularism and nationalism? To address this question, I focus on the scope of locality, religious primordialism, and corruption as the primary problem. These three sections are reviewed to show the role of the desire for education in forming secularism and nationalism. Decentralization is a critical part of exploring the influence of locality in the formation of secularism and nationalism. Narratives of religious authorities show how religious primordialism affects the formation of secularism and nationalism.; on corruption, we are dealing with a systemic culture of corruption in both regional and central governments. Based on the three factors, I would like to highlight the portrait of education at that time and its role. From here, I move on to offer education on the desire that I borrowed from Timothy Schroeder to talk about motivation, enjoyment, and recognition that can shake and build human character. From this, I argue that education on desire is vital to manage human beings from the desire for hatred (religious), the desire to dominate, and the desire for political-economic satisfaction.

Abstract

The pandemic period forced the church to change its way of service from onsite to online, including Sunday service. The church tries to bring an atmosphere of worship in person in the church moving to the house or any other place through virtual worship in the digital space. However, it turns out that attendance at online church services is a problem. Some think the presence in the digital space is less real than the presence in the analog room. How can attendance at online worship be validated as a natural body presence in the liturgy? Will the people experience an encounter with God’s presence through worship in the digital space? This paper attempts to examine the experience of being present through the point of view of practical theology. I reconstruct the meaning of presence in worship in the digital space by emphasizing a model of fellowship in the Triune God.

ΕΧΩ ΤΗΝ ΚΑΥΧΗΣΙΝ: The Rhetorical Function of Paul's Boasting in Romans 15:17 Kasih, Elia Mesrico Abdi

Abstract

Paul’s boasting in Romans 15:17 raises the question of how the act of boasting needs to be perceived within the Christian world. Generally, boasting is considered a negative conduct and thus one should refrain from doing such action. However, this paper argues that Paul’s boasting in that verse has a positive significant rhetorical function that is correlated to gathering the support for his plan of mission to the worlds beyond Rome. In support of this argument, it is instructive to identify the different attitudes towards boasting both exhibited in the first-century Greco-Roman world and the Jewish tradition during that era. Moreover, classical rhetoric is also an important key to open the door to a clearer understanding of why in Romans 15:17 Paul boldly states that he has the pride or the reason to boast in Christ Jesus.

Abstract

Pa’pandan is a practice of gift-giving in the Toraja culture of South Sulawesi. The article identifies that pa’pandan has become a harmful practice because of the influence of capitalization. The practice is embedded in the debt system affecting mainly the less fortunate people in the Torajan society. This article focuses on efforts to negate cultural capitalization that influences the practice of pa’pandan to become an uncontrolled or excessive gift-giving practice. As a result, it produces gifts that have a negative impact. Bringing Jean Luc-Marion’s phenomenological method into dialogue with the negative theology according to Arthur Bradley, this article offers a negative theological view on a gift-giving practice to reconstruct the practice of pa’pandan into becoming a more effective practice with a more positive impact, especially in transforming the debt system in the life of the marginalized.

Abstract

The conflict between members of Prayer Fellowships and members of Gereja Masehi Injili di Timor because of differences in spirituality has become a struggle for the church, including its members in general. The relationship between the two tends to dominate each other. As a result, their relationship is strained. This article aims to find an alternative for GMIT to adequately manage the plurality of spirituality among its members amid the presence of the Prayer Groups. This article uses a theological approach combined with a historical phenomenology approach by Jan S. Aritonang. In the end, this article combines Joas Adiprasetya's model of the Garden and Tom Hovestol's Spiritual Profile to solve  the problem between GMIT members and Prayer Fellowship members. The Garden Model explains that believershave different ways to express their experiences, love, and relationships with the Triune God. While the Spiritual Profile offers a joint learning model based on Jesus' ministry, namely through koinonia and martyria. This article suggests that these two models give alternatives forGMIT in providing a common space for people with various spiritual practices to get to know each other's uniqueness through joint discussions about God's Word in-depth and learning spiritual discipline. The result is the manifestation of reciprocal openness and the restoration of tenuous relationships. These two alternatives can manage the plurality of spirituality in communion as a whole and in balance.

Abstract

This article is an attempt to provide an alternative contextual theology in Indonesia. The awareness of Asian and Indonesian theology in recent decades has brought about hermeneutic creativity that seeks to produce a theology that is truly born and belongs to Asia, especially Indonesia. Intertextual hermeneutics, which is popular in the West today, has been developed in Asia to become cross-textual hermeneutics by considering the richness and diversity of Asian cultural and religious texts. However, the certainty that in Asia, especially Indonesia, ritual and oral (speech) traditions have functions that are more rooted and widespread compared to textual (written) traditions demands an alternative hermeneutical model to make non-textual traditions, especially rituals that are preserved amid local communities, has a place in theology. This study uses a descriptive-analytical approach to parse the meaning of ritual, ritual studies (religious material culture), and textual hermeneutics to obtain an alternative to Indonesian contextual hermeneutics. The results of the study indicate that there is a need for dialogue between ritual studies as a form of respect for the authority of Indonesian traditions and textual hermeneutics, which is still dominant in the interpretation of the Scriptures. Dialogue between ritual studies and textual hermeneutics is an alternative to contextual theology in Indonesia.
