Abstract

This paper describes the poor state of protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers Rights in almost all economic sectors, both formal and non-formal, in Malaysia. In this research, most of the randomly interviewed respondents were Indonesian Migrant Workers (TKI) with a few Philipinos, Indians and Vietnamese employed in various sectors such as domestic work, manufacturing, plantations, construction, or retail (stores and cafes). Many of the TKI living and working in Malaysia did not receive their full rights as workers and sometimes even lost their basic rights such as that to_a minimum wage, not being not having their wages withheld or not paid at all their withhelds, as well as a refusal to have their passports returned. Many of the Indonesian workers were physically and sexually abused by their employers. For example, some Indonesian workers employed in the plantation and construction sectors had to stay in very poor accommodation while many female workers were victimized into becoming forced prostitutes by their sponsors. In addition, some of the TKI had to face serious problems of protection; many as vic~ of corrupt practices such as the imposition of illegal levies by Malaysian olice and immigration staffs suffered by the TKI were demands for payments; extortion of money and confiscation of valuables factors contributing to the vulnerability of Indonesian migrant workers such as: a) Low formal education and lack of relevant training; b )Lack of information on how to obtain travel documents, how to apply for jobs or visas and how much to pay in fees; c) Lack of knowledge or understanding of the labour law and immigration regulations of Malaysia as the receiving country; d) Falsifying ofiD Cards, data of passports and other travel documents in the recruitment and deployment process by recruiting agents and involving immigration officials. Keywords: Indonesian migrant workers, Malaysia

Abstract

Papua and West Papua provinces are two of many lagging provinces in Indonesia in terms of access to adequate sanitation. Hence, this paper aims to reveal determinants of access to improved sanitation by investigating the environmental, demographic, and socio-economic correlation in both provinces. Data from the 2011 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) were used to determine the demographic and socio-economic correlates of households access to improved sanitation facilities. Probit regression models were fitted to the data. The results suggest that district, place or residence, type and location of household water source, household size, age of household head, education of household head, and household wealth have significant correlation with access to improved sanitation. These corroborate previous findings and more importantly, it can be used to inform policy makers in Indonesia especially in Papua and West Papua Provinces.

Abstract

Indonesia lost hundreds of thousands of its people lives due to tsunami and earthquakes. A huge number of live lost reflects that the community preparedness was very low, mainly due to their lack of knowledge and awareness about these natural hazards and their negative impacts. The Indonesian government and its people used to be focused their activities on emergency response, rehabilitation and reconstruction phases. Community preparedness was not the priority in the management of disaster. The Aceh giant disaster has become a momentum to change the paradigm of disaster management by increasing community preparedness. As a natural disaster risk hotspot, most of Indonesian people are in vulnerable condition, leaving in high risk areas. Although having horrible experience of earthquakes and tsunamis, the community in high risk areas in the District of Padang Pariaman, Serang, Cilacap and Sikka, and the City of Bengkulu are still not enough prepared in anticipating the natural disasters. Public education and community preparedness therefore are crucially and urgently needed to reduce the disaster risks.Keyworc/: Preparedness, Community. Disaster; Natural

Abstract

Changes in family dynamics during the isolation period of COVID-19 have an impact on family resilience in preparing for the adaptation of new habits in Indonesia. This study examines emotional reactions and family resilience, using family demographic groups, namely family type, parent's occupational type, and a residential area used as study variables. The sample came from 318 overseas student families who had reunited with families from 23 cities and districts in West Java Province. Simple frequency data analysis were used to present related situations. The results of the study showed that family type, family socioeconomic (parents' occupation), and the type of residential area of the family showed differences in positive emotions, negative emotions and were significant to family resilience during COVID-19 isolation. The implications of this study lead to the function of families in strengthening family resilience to prepare for the adaptation of new habits in Indonesia.

Abstract

Fulfillment of water services for urban poor is still- an issue among academicians and practicioners. Eventhough the Law has stated that access to clean water is the rights of each citizens, there are still numbers of poor people that have no access to clean water. For the urban poor, access to clean water have to be traded off with expensive price. It leads to the household water expenses, reach to more than half of total household expenses. Nowadays, water services from government provider (PDAM) have not reach all possible customers. Limited infrastructure and water sources give impacts to limited services from PDAM This situation also apply for Semarang City case, PDAMTirta Moedal can only reach about .fifty percent of peoples demand For solving the problems, there are some initiatives coming from local people for fulfilling water needs co/ectively such as in Sukorejo and Tugurejo. These two local/eve/ water fulfi/lement systems, showed how the flexibility of local people can help in fulfilling the need of citizen to clean water. This article describes the process of local people developing these initiatives, the mechanism of water fulfillment in each system, impact of the water management in the local level to its accessibility and its sustainability. These initiatives can be used as lesson learned for other areas. Keywords: water services, water fulfillment in local/eve/, poor household, urban areas
