Abstract

This paper aims to understand how is the globalization of migration and the role of the diaspora to their country of origin. Though it has remained largely untested, it is commonly assumed that international migration has accelerated as part of globalization processes. The broad trend of the globalization of migration assumes to be one of contributing factor to establishment and engagement of diaspora. Globalization of Migration measured by an increase in stock and widening in geographical scope of international migration may occur mainly due revolution of information, communication, and transportation that have significantly reduced the cost of migration. Such situation not only increases in the volume of migration but also generates the shift in global migration pattern. The change to new destination followed by the rise of migration are more likely to connect immigrants into one big community or to join to existing diaspora to ensure their transnational life and also to keep well and strong connection with their homeland. Diaspora that has been long established affects development in countries of origin. Such participation in development is not only in remittances, but also in building bridges between countries of origin and destination which convey in economic activity, transfers of, skills, technological development, and cultural enrichment.

Abstract

Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) is a program by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government which gives a chance for the less affluent to achieve up to secondary education. This paper examines three aspects of KJP implementation, namely (i) opportunities and challenges of the program implementation as the fulfillment of social justice in education; (ii) problems related to the program implementation and its future challenges; and (iii) KJP as an effort to improve education services. This study used primary data obtained from interviews and relevant secondary data. The main finding indicates that violations and misuse of KJP fund still exist. Although the government has improved the rules, management, and mechanisms for the distribution of the program, inaccuracies in data and fund recipients are still found. Therefore, these issues need to be the points of evaluation, improvement, and innovation to fulfill the social justice for the disadvantaged citizens.

Abstract

HIV-AIDS epidemic in Indonesia growsfastly and spread out to all over provinces in Indonesia, especially among some high risk populations such as commercial sex workers and injecting drug users (IDUs). In 200 /the accumulative HIV-AIDS cases in Indonesia was 2575, then increased to 6789 in Maret 2005 and reached the number of I 8963 in June 2008. The number is assumed to be much higher that the official reported cases as the existence of iceberg phenomenon. This paper aimed at presenting the spread of HIV-AIDS cases in Indonesia from socio-demographic point of views. The data used for this paper was mainly taken from the result of literature review as well as our research conducted in Surabaya and Bali in /999 and from our recent study conducted in Batam and Sanggau in 2006 and 2007. Data collection was done by the use of indepth interviews, focus group discussion and field observation. The study shows that HIV-AIDS cases have steady increased among particular groups, such as women and those in the age group of /5-39 years. The highest number of AIDS cases was found among people at the 15-19 years age group. The increased cases were mainly due to the high-risk behaviour that exposed to the spread of HIV-AIDS such as the use of unsafe injecting drug and sexual practices. This study recommends that HIV-AJDS problem has to be overcome immediately and pay special attention to the most affected age groups for targeting as well as introducing type of interventions. Keywords: spread of HIV-AIDS cases, socio demograhic factors, risk behaviour

Abstract

The effort to control the spread of HIV in the IDUs (Injection Drug Users) group started in 1999 in Bali and in Jakarta in 2001. The strategy is to adopt the concept of Harm Reduction (HR) with its main activities is outreach. The general objective of the study is to assess the effectiveness of outreach program to reduce risk behaviors related with HIV/AIDS among IDUs. This study is conducted quantitative and qualitative survey. The design of quantitative survey is using Cross Sectional Post only with Comparison Group Evaluation Design, while focus group discussions, in-depth interviews and observations are using in qualitative survey. In general, the process of outreach program has well done by program implementer, but this activity has not been reduced HIV risk behaviors consistently. The high intensity of injection, the strong bonds of friendship, social norms that do not support and stigmatization toward IDUs are the constraints that dominate the behavior change effort. Meanwhile, the limited of outreach workers is also the obstacle to run this program properly.

Abstract

This article depicts the disaster survivors' recent situation amidst the COVID-19 crisis in Palu City (Central Sulawesi). Even though multiple disasters occurred around two years ago, there are still many people living in temporary shelters. They could not apply a health protocol recommendation such as physical distancing due to densely populated setting. Apart from that, they could not access a proper WASH facility in the evacuation camps. The coronavirus outbreak has been undermining the temporary shelters' dwellers hardly. Most of them are trapped or unable to move to a safe place, albeit they want to do it so. The local government has anticipated the worst-case scenario through direct assistance and stimulus programs. However, those ongoing programs are inadequate to reach the whole communities in need. In order to manage the COVID-19 pandemic, this article suggests people empowering approach by harnessing the existing social capital, for instance, social network and community-based initiatives. Learning from the tragedy on 28 September 2018, the community-based initiatives focus on providing basic needs (food, sanitizer, mask) and mental health support.

Abstract

Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Insan Cendekia (MAN-IC) faces, similar with other schools, disfunctional in preparing people that are more qualified, if the institution does not reform it-self along with the strategic challanges which are developing. MAN-IC, that was build based on Modernist-Islam spirit, is a model madrasah especially with regard to its religious and science & technology teaching practices. Nowadays, this institution is not only challanged with old challanges, that are searching Islamic as well as Indonesian characters and modernization, but also with the new ones, that are democratization including local otonomy and globalization. Rapid Assessment method to see its governance, management, curriculum, and teaching-learning aspects within the two of three existing MAN-ICs (which are located in Jakarta and Jambi) reveals the imbalances and unreadiness of those institution in facing those challanges. Reform on those aspects proposed by this article is assumed to be empowering its responsive ability in preparing future

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the determinants of school enrollment of children age 10–15 whose parents are working in plantation sector, Indonesia. The data for the analysis is obtained from the 2013 National Socioeconomic Survey conducted by Badan Pusat Statistik, Indonesia. The data covers 20,311 children at age 10–15 in the plantation sector. The analysis is carried out using the descriptive and logistic regression models. The result shows that the enrollment rate for children age 10–15 in the plantation sector was high at 93.7 percent. Meanwhile, the logistic regression analysis shows that the economic activity of children (working or not working) was the most influencing factor on the educational enrollment. Working children had 0,085 times less chance to enroll in education than children who do not work. This finding is compounded by the fact that many heads of household only complete primary schooling. That makes it difficult for working children to enroll in schooling. Therefore, the government should improve the quality of education so that the educational benefit will be greater than the forgone earnings. In addition, it is important to increase the household income in order to prevent children from working.

Abstract

Migration issue has been neglected during the last decade, although it has a significant relation with development issue. Migration, as a part of demographic component, has changed demographic structure and the society life. This article reviews the existing migration-related publications, describes migration experiences of the society and highlights their relations with development. This article suggests that migration should be taken into account as an independent variable when examining population phenomena.Keyword: Migration studies, National development
