Abstract

There are numerous welding workshops in Solo, but they mostly offer similar products such as household items like fences, canopies, and window grilles. These products are customized, leading to inconsistent production levels—sometimes with high demand, other times quiet periods. To sustain these workshops, it's crucial to innovate both products and marketing strategies. Products like office, campus, and school furniture are consistently in demand. To compete effectively, workshop products need to improve in quality through advanced welding technology, particularly Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). Therefore, workshops require training in using sophisticated equipment like GMAW machines. In the Community Partnership Program (PKM), the PKM UNS team collaborates with two partners: Sumber Rejeki Welding Workshop in Dusun Sawahan and the Takmir of Fatimah Ar-Royyan Mosque. The program unfolds in two phases. Phase I involves training workshop owners and workers in GMAW machine operations, with the PKM UNS team providing expertise. Phase II includes a joint project to create desk and chair furniture as demonstration products from the training, which will be donated to the TPA of Fatimah Ar-Royyan Mosque in Jongkang. This PKM initiative aims to equip owners and workers from Sumber Rejeki Welding Workshop and nearby workshops with skills in designing structures and manufacturing office furniture using GMAW, as well as effectively marketing these products.

Abstract

Laminar Air Flow (LAF) is a crucial device in microbiology laboratories, pharmaceutical facilities, and healthcare facilities, helping maintain sterile, contamination-free work areas. However, the LAF product was previously manufactured by PT. Entri Jaya Makmur was based on mechanical switches and a simple character LCD display, resulting in inefficiency, minimal operational monitoring features, and low market appeal. This community service project aims to improve the product's functionality and sales value by modernizing the control system with a Nextion-based touchscreen Human-Machine Interface (HMI). This HMI not only replaces analog buttons but also adds various features such as timer settings, operating hours, HEPA filter life alarms, and UV light safety indicators, enhancing user safety and ease of operation. The attractive graphic design and more intuitive interface have been shown to improve perceived quality and consumer preference. The implementation results showed a significant increase in sales, from just one unit per month to three units in the first month of the new design's launch. Thus, HMI-based LAF modernization has proven effective in increasing the competitiveness of local products, supporting domestic market penetration, and contributing to the provision of healthcare facilities that meet national standards and align with the domestic medical device independence program.

Abstract

Buran Village in Karanganyar Regency faces challenges in managing household plastic waste, particularly used bottles and gallon jugs, due to limited shredding technology. Existing industrial-scale plastic shredders are generally very large, expensive, and require three-phase electricity, making them unsuitable for rural communities. Meanwhile, the manual methods and simple tools used by the community have proven inefficient and pose a risk of injury. This community service program aims to design and build a portable plastic shredder powered by a 4-stroke motorcycle as an appropriate technology solution for Buran Village. The implementation method includes identifying field problems, surveying user needs, conceptualizing and detailing designs, fabricating a prototype, and conducting initial performance tests. The result is a compact, portable shredder powered by a 125cc 4-stroke gasoline engine. The shredding mechanism uses three dynamic blades and one static blade capable of shredding plastic bottles and gallon jugs into 1–2 cm pieces on average. The machine is equipped with wheels and a handle for portability, as well as safety features such as a blade cover, a safety hopper, and a push lever. Trials demonstrated that the machine can continuously shred approximately 15 kg of PET waste per day, reducing waste volume by >80% at the source. Implementation and evaluation results indicated that the machine is easy to operate, independent of PLN electricity supply, and has the potential for widespread community replication using components commonly available in local workshops. Implementation of this technology in Buran Village is expected to improve the efficiency of plastic waste management, increase the economic value of waste for residents, and support efforts to reduce plastic pollution.
