Abstract

This paper explores the strategic enhancement of Brunei’s military capabilities under the guidelines of the Brunei Defense White Paper 2021, focusing on establishing a robust minimal level deterrence. It emphasizes transitioning from conventional defense paradigms to an integrated, technologically advanced military structure tailored to contemporary and future security challenges. The significance of minimal level deterrence is analyzed, illustrating how a proportionate and efficient military force not only deters potential aggressors but also supports counter-terrorism efforts. This approach underscores the dual benefits of ensuring national security while facilitating economic stability and growth, allowing Brunei to allocate resources more effectively between defense and development sectors. The discussion extends to how Brunei can optimize its defense expenditure by investing in high-impact technologies that enhance capability across air, land, and naval forces without necessitating a large military footprint. The paper argues that such strategic investments not only bolster national and regional security but also enhance Brunei's international standing by contributing to a stable Southeast Asian region. The integration of advanced technologies and a focus on multi-domain operations are proposed as key strategies for maintaining security and supporting economic objectives.

Abstract

Culture is the expression of life that has been held by society for centuries, but it is possible for it to be hijacked by right-wing groups for their own purposes. Since it is an essential component in the formation of collective identities, it is misappropriated by the group to cultivate its ideology and to fragment social cohesion. The case between Indonesia and Germany has been chosen to analyse the similarities of right-wing characters in exploiting culture, including music, through the lens of Margareth Archer's cultural theory and Ulrich Beck's risk society theory, and later compared using Midlarsky’s extremism perspective. This paper is divided into three sub-chapters of analysis, firstly, when culture, music, and right-wing groups are united. Second, how they have managed to attract and politicise audiences, and finally, how they have built up an 'us' and 'them' mentality. In conclusion, both the Indonesian and German cases show that right-wing groups maintain their numbers and expand their new networks through cultural exploitation, including preaching, and music.

Abstract

The re-designation of the Houthi militant group as a terrorist organisation by the United States (US) could reignite conflict tensions in the Middle East region. This US decision shows the inconsistency of Joe Biden's administration, which had revoked the Houthis' terrorist status at the beginning of his administration. This research aims to analyse the motives for the US decision to re-designate the Houthis as a terrorist group. The method used in this research is an exploratory descriptive qualitative method using data collection techniques, namely observation and literature study. The results of this study conclude that the US's changing attitude towards the Houthis' terrorist status is part of the US strategy to put pressure on the Houthis, because the Iran-backed Houthis are a threat to the US in maintaining its existence in the Middle East Region, especially in Yemen. Yemen's position is very strategic for international trade, because it is the entrance gate for navigation to the Red Sea. The US also has ideological interests in Yemen; it wants to spread the Sunni ideology adopted by Saudi Arabia as its alliance against Iran, which spreads the Shia ideology adopted by the Houthis as its allies

The Air Force uses AI for predictive aircraft maintenance. The study revealed some challenges to the adoption and application of AI for national security in Nigeria, including a lack of awareness and understanding about the potential of AI in the security sector among policymakers and decision-makers. The study recommends that Nigeria should focus on data science and improve the capacity of coders to really automate a lot of things to be able to receive data and analyze it. Abstract

Since the return to civil rule in 1999, Nigeria has been battling with series of violent agitations from various geo-political zones in the country. These violent agitations which have taken terror dimensions have contributed to national security threat. Terrorists’ attacks have resulted in the killings of hundreds of people and wanton destruction of property that worth billions of naira through bombings. The major thrust of this paper is to investigate the challenge of domestic terrorism with major emphasis on the activities of the dreaded militant Islamic sect, popularly known as Boko Haram since 2009. The paper argues that most of the circumstances that led to this criminality are not unconnected with frustration caused by high rate of unemployment, poverty and weak governance. It, therefore suggests that Nigeria needs to re-evaluate her domestic and foreign policy directions and objectives towards combating domestic terrorism. It asserts that Nigeria’s domestic terrorism has external connections aid that the country could also be exporting terrorism to other countries in the nearest future if not checked. The methodology adopted in this paper is historical and thematic, utilizing materials from both primary and secondary sources.

Abstract

An effective deradicalisation program is the key to combating violent extremism and reducing potential harm to society from radical ideologies. A gender-based approach to tackling violent extremism among women has received esteemed recognition from the governments of many countries. Various international organizations and scholarly institutes have also approved the advantages of this method. This work aims to find and address the gap in the current deradicalization program in Indonesia for future development in both academic and practical areas of this subject matter. An integrative literature review is used as a method that involves synthesizing previous research and integrating empirical findings and perspectives to uncover areas where more research is needed. Through a substantial amount of literature considered in this work, Indonesia’s deradicalization program is discovered to lack a gender perspective. The ingrained patriarchy and male-centric attitude are identified as the primary reasons behind its unpopularity. Evidence from various case studies has been provided to justify the gap and the need to integrate a gender-based approach into the deradicalization program in Indonesia. Recommendations include recruiting more female deradicalization experts, providing specialized training to female prison officers to counter violent ideology, and tightening collaboration with women-based civil society organizations.

Abstract

Mercenaries or guns for hire have been a considerable force to reckon with in the international system. Their involvement in the conflicts of all scales have their share of contribution to the eventual outcome of the conflict. Such is the case of the Wagner Group. As a non-state actor, the Wagner Group has engendered numerous tempests across the world, one of them is the Sahel region. Their presence in the Sahel region has been a focal point of disputes within the international community. Against that backdrop, the paper seeks to shed light on how the regional security complex of the Sahel region has been severely affected by non-state actors like the Wagner group. In carrying out the research undertaking, the writers employ the qualitative research method that entails the use of secondary data alike along with the regional security complex as the guiding theoretical framework. This paper lodges how the Sahel region regional security dynamic has been subjected to changes as a result of the Wagner group’s pursuit of their own set of interests. However, it is important how the leeway for them to do so was made available by the states who reside in the region.

Abstract

This article examines the rise and conflict of narratives about the fall of the Iraqi city of Mosul to the Islamic State (ISIS), which marks its tenth anniversary this year (2024). ISIS occupied parts of Iraq from 2014 to 2017, and its defeat required Iraqi mobilization and international support from the international coalition. This article attempts to trace the narratives and their conflicts about the main cause of Mosul’s fall to ISIS. The fall of Mosul was like a snowball that rolled and grew, as it spread to a large area of Northwestern Iraq. It has been shown that several factors combined to cause the fall of Mosul, not a single cause. In addition, accusations still exist between the political parties responsible for Mosul's security and administration.
