Abstract

The objective of this study is to explain about speech act in “Aladdin” movie. The writer used qualitative as method of the study. To collect the data, firstly the writer searched for “Aladdin” movie and its script. Secondly, the writer watched the movie thoroughly to understand the content and the situation in the movie. Thirdly, the writer read the script to understand the content and pay attention to each characters’ utterances. Lastly, the writer selected the utterances that contain speech act. In addition, the steps for analyzing the data were; analyzed the data by classifying the utterances that were refer to locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts, and then the writer grouped the utterances into direct or indirect speech act. Last, the writer drew some conclusions and wrote a full report about the study. A total of 383 dimensions of speech act were found. It contained 317 utterances and 66 actions which caused by the utterance. They are divided into locutionary 148 uteraces or (38,64%), illocutionary 169 utterances or (44,13%), and perlocutionary 66 actions or (17,23%). For direct speech act there are 183 utterances or (57,73% ), while indirect speech act 134 utterances or (42,27% ).

Abstract

Think-Talk-Write is one of learning strategieswhich purposes to improve students’ understanding ability.This strategy can minimize the students’ difficulties in writing and help the teacher in teaching writing. In other words, Think-Talk-Write can help students construct their own knowledge. So that, the students understandtheconcept better. Students are also able to communicate or discuss their thought with their friends. So, the students can help each other and exchange their ideas. This strategy can help students to understand the material being taught. It is possible thing, if they are already familiar with the material obtained, they will be easy to apply their idea in writing or in this case, students are able to make narrative text. Thus, this researchwas done to see whether Think-Talk-Write techniques gives contribution to improve the students’ motivation in writing narrative text at Junior High Schoollevel. It was found that teaching process ran well. Students were active, enthusiastic and interested in writing. The result of research showed that Think-Talk-Write techniques can improve students’ achievement in writing narrative text.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate(1)how the video scriptsofnative advertising for promoting Tajung and Blongsongas Palembang traditional textile is made. (2) to what extend the video script made in the video of Tajung and Blongsong cloths fulfill the criteria of SPEAKING Model, (3) to what extend the video script made for the video of Tajung and Blongsong cloths fulfill the communicative functionsof the movestructure. Dell Hymes’ SPEAKINGModel and Bathia’s Move Analysis wereused for testing product advertising effectivenessThe results showed that the video script should be developed through several testing to validate the data. Furthermore, the analysis of the components of communication, and linguistic function revealed the video fulfilled the criteria for native advertising.

Abstract

Abstract: Cultural understanding cannot be separated from language learning. It can improve thelanguage skills of language learners. Language teachers are suggested to teach not only thelinguistic knowledge but also the cultural knowledge and to provide the media which can helplearners to have better competence in using the language, in this case is English. One of the mediais literature. It will help students to have closer and better look on the cultures where English isused. This cultural understanding is important to be promoted at early age. Young learners are attheir best time in learning process, including in learning a culture through literature. This paperhighlights the importance of cross cultural understanding and literature as the medium in theprocess of teaching English to young learners.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out the relationships among self-esteem, school motivation,communicative approach, and speaking achievement of the students. The data were collected throughquestionnaires and speaking test. The data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment CoefficientCorrelation and Multiple Regression Linear. The results show that there is a positive and significantrelationship between self-esteem and speaking achievement of the students (r = 0.474); there is a positiveand significant relationship between school motivation and speaking achievement of the students (r =0.561); there is positive and significant relationship between communicative approach and speakingachievement (r = 0.679); there is a positive and significant relationship between self-esteem and schoolmotivation (r = 0.567); there is a positive and significant relationship between school motivation andcommunicative approach (r = 0.510); there is a positive and significant relationship between self-esteemand communicative approach (r = 0.590); there is a positive relationship between self-esteem added toschool motivation and communicative approach towards speaking achievement (R = 0.723).Simultaneously, there is a significant influence of independent variables towards dependent variable ofthe research. The contribution of self-esteem, school motivation, and communicative approach towardsspeaking achievement of the students is 45.5%.

Abstract

Abstract: The aims of this research are to find out the characterizations of Judy Hopps in the movie Zootopiaand the struggles of Judy Hopps to make her dream come true. The method used was descriptive method. Incollecting the data, the researcher downloaded and watched the movie, found the script movie to get fullunderstanding about the content in the movie, found out the struggle in Judy Hopps character and noted theutterances in Judy Hopps character as the data for analysis based on Feminism theory by Karl Max. There arefive characterizations found in Judy Hopps’ character, they are; clever, energetic, heroic, kind-hearted and nevergive up. The findings revealed Judy Hoops has a dream to make the world better place. In achieving her dream,she faced stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, violence, and segregation. She struggled for being a femalepolice officer, for raising social class and for gender equality.

Abstract

Abstract: Teaching English to young learners has become a trend nowadays. In some schools,English has been taught as a local content subject. Teaching young learners is not like teachingadults because children have their own way of learning. Young learners need to feel secure andknow that there are some obvious reasons for learning English. Therefore, teachers have tomotivate them to learn as much as possible in order to be able to communicate fluently usingEnglish. Since children like to play and have fun, the learning and teaching process should besuitable with the characteristics of the children themselves. Various forms of fun activities forchildren are important for their learning and development. This paper will discuss variousactivities in teaching young learners which could enhance their language skills.

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of the study was to find out whether or not it is effective to teach readingnarrative texts through Uncover Concentrate Monitor Evaluate (U-C-Me) strategy to the tenthgrade students of State Senior High School 8Palembang. In data analysis, it found that the result ofpaired sample, the result of t-obtained was 26.64, where the value of t-table was 1.671 atsignificance level of 0.05 and with one tailed testing. Since the value of t-table obtained was lowerthan the value of t-table (26.64 < 1.671) consequently the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected andalternative hypothesis was accepted and the result of t-obtained was 5.09 at significance level of0.05 and with one tailed testing. Since the value of t-obtained was higher than the value of t-table(5.09 > 1.671) consequently the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternatif hypothesis(Ha) was accepted. It means that it was effective to teach reading narrative texts through UncoverMonitor Evaluate (U-C-ME) strategy to the tenth grade students of state Senior High School 8Palembang.
